What you want is your main hand to be as slow of a weapon as possible (spear is the best) because your sweeping wind damage is based of that, thus you want it to be higher per hit. And you then want a faster off hand. I believe fists can roll better 'monk' stats, but on a weapon, you're better off going for the best damage. Unless you find a Won Kim Lao and a Thunderfury. Those both increase lightning damage, which ends up being your main damage type at 60.
Monks, IMO, are a lot of fun. I have 2 60s and a lot of hours on them.
Sweeping Wind damage being based on your main hand was a myth, because it was based on whichever hand your SW first rolled on (pre v2.0, your attacks rotated between your main-hand and offhand), so it didn't matter where you had which weapon (yes, I tested this).
Now, however, your swings are based on which mouse button you're pressing. I haven't tested it, but I'm pretty sure the damage is calculated based on your overall damage (meaning, it doesn't matter where/what weapons are equipped).
Either way, the damage difference was so neglible you'd never notice it unless you were on your way to the next difficulty trying to survive or doing timed runs for experience.
Lightning
was the primary damage to focus on pre 2.0, but now,
fire,
holy, and
physical are very viable as well with the chances for those stat bonuses to roll on several armor pieces, and options for different punches and abilities to focus on certain damage types.
Try different things and see what you like. Your build will likely need to compliment your gear. I've tried everything, and I always come back to focusing on having APS as high as it can possibly go, and spending a lot of spirit quickly. It's just more fun to me when you can spam abilities rather than sitting there waiting for spirit to hit your next ability and rely on your basic punches more.
I agree though. I've played every class and the Monk is the only class I really, really enjoy. ^^
