Was thinking about logging in to get a boost to 70 and try to finish the non-stash rewards this weekend; but without a pet that motivation train isn't making any steam.

$10 would have been great, $20 terrible. $15, not too bad but the double stash will make it better.

Ya, about the head for vacation for a week so not sure to buy now just to reorganize some stash or wait till I get back and can play with the actual character.

Got it earlier, played about 3 hours, got to lvl 70 and started to use some items I had already kept for that (non-season of course).

Most of the items I use are for the Wizard but in the meantime it gets the job done since the Necro's primary stat is Intelligence. I haven't tried many builds obviously, and I didn't try it during the PTR so it's completely new to me (well, new in D3 that is, I played some Necro in D2). I mostly tried the 'typical' Necro Army stuff and so far at least for that sort of playstyle it works well. I can Revive up to 10 enemies I killed and they follow for some time (19 seconds default... and 12 seconds with a Rune that increases the Revived enemies' damage, but it's weird that they didn't just go with 20 seconds for default, why 19? That extra second made everything OP or what?), that's alongside 7 skeletons I can get as a Passive (and can be Activated via Runes for different Activated effects) and if you want there's another skill gives a Skeletal Mage for a couple of seconds (one specific Rune I like with that one consumes all of your Essence and increases the Mage's damage by 3% for every point of Essence consumed, reminds me of my Boulder Toss build for my Barb).

So when it comes to getting my personal army, it works. I haven't experimented much with that type of playstyle yet, only tried some Gems for Pet damage and Cubed Tasker and Teo gloves for Pet attack speed, if you combine that with a fast 1-handed weapon and a bunch of added Attack Speed bonuses from gear it gets hilarious to see your 7 skeletons and your revived army attack so fast I swear they swing 3 or 4 times per second (one of the Activated effect on one of the Runes for the skeletons focus them all on one specific target and their attack speed is further increased by 25%). I don't know what's the attack speed cap on the Necro pets, it's probably the same as any other pets from all other classes but I never bothered actually checking around for the stats about that. But it's fun, that's what matters.

When it comes to Corpses, it's pretty much all there. I haven't used a lot of the Runes for the Corpse skill but one I do like creates a passive aura around you that automatically consumes corpses around you and grants more Essence, which is good for spending it all in one go with the Skeletal Mage skill. But other than that I still have to play with that more. There's the Bone Armor and Poison stuff too. From what I've seen most (although, not all) of the Necro runes are Poison and Physical, some I believe are Cold. There's no Lightning though... and I'm not sure if there's any Fire in there... I'll have to check again. But the gist is it's mostly Poison and Physical, which is probably similar to the Witch Doctor.

I just started though, and the gear I'm using isn't providing anything specific for the Necro yet so everything I use and do is very basic. When I start getting the Set items and the Necro-specific Legendaries I'll start experimenting more. For now I'm 'stuck' to about Torment 8 or 9.

Overall though, so far, it's pretty solid. I'd give it a good 7/10.

I played a couple of hours with it and I really like the class- it's already my favorite. But I'm not a high end type player so I couldn't say how how it'll do in rifts, etc. I don't usually go higher than torment 1 in anything.

Actually so far all I've done is to stack on as much exp gain as I can and I let my minions do everything. You get 7 skeletons which I think do 50% of your weapon damage so I equipped a level 70 -30 levels requirement 3000+dps weapon and let them do the killing for me. I'm sure when I get to 70 I'll need to get involved more but I like the 'hands off' approach. I noticed one of the passive skills is your summons do 200% of thorns damage or something so I'll probably go with some kind of thorn build and concentrate on speedy minions so I can sit back and relax while they kill.

I have to say the best part by far of the necro is the minions are automatic BUT they use a skill. So if you use the skeletons and golem it reserves 2 of your 4 active skill slots but they automatically spawn/respawn and you can toggle them 'active', like you do auras, which will make them strong but they'll probably die- and then come back a few seconds later.

Why wouldn't you always have them in 'active' mode?

My wording might be incorrect... they are like the crusader auras, they are there and do some damage, but if you click again to make them active it lasts a few seconds and that has to recharge.

I got ya. They have a passive, always-on ability, and a more-powerful, triggered, temporary, active ability as well.

Why wouldn't you always have them in 'active' mode?

The Command Skeleton passive just summons 1 skeleton every 2-3 seconds with a limit of 7 skeletons. (I think those numbers are right.) The active ability causes them to attack whatever target you select (highlight) with increased attack rate. What's nice about the active ability is that it also causes the skeletons to pounce the target, which avoids a potential downfall of travel time between targets. I've spoken before about being a big fan of the Command Skeletons ability -- especially when combined with the Frenzy rune. The ability becomes quite ridiculous down the line when you're using the summon-focused armor set, which allows your skeletal mage summon to boost skeleton damage by a percentage for each skeletal mage.

I just hit 70 with mine last night, had a little pile of shards and got a couple set pieces from Kadala. Steamrolling pretty well through T2, and T3 wasn't too bad either. Looking forward to rounding out the sets and giving them a try, but overall definitely enjoying the class.

Just picked up D3 Battle Chest. Any advice for a newbie on where/how to start? A 700+ page thread is a bit intimidating. BTW I've played probably thousands of hours of D1, D2/LOD and Path of Exiles, and probably every D2 clone out there. I prefer ranged attack.

I just jumped right in and think you can too, pick the ranged class, it's good. You can pick up the higher level things later.

As I've been playing more lately due to the Necromancer I found myself starting to experiment a bit with builds for other classes, stuff that you'd think wouldn't "work" (or wouldn't be efficient) or seems just weird. I was thinking about trying a Wizard with Thorns, maybe a build based on Disintegrate, doing Thorns damage during the attack. Has anyone ever tried something 'weird' that isn't posted anywhere because it's just so rare that no one uses it? It doesn't have to be mega powerful mind you. I wouldn't mind if I was "stuck" on Torment 1 with it, but just for the sake of trying something new I'd give it a go.

People complain about build variety, but those same people typically want to push grifts, where there can only ever be one best build.

If you want to have some fun and top out at T6 or T10, you have a literal ton of options. It narrows a bit if you want to run T13, but you still have quite a bit of variety.

And this is something that people absolutely never account for when comparing to D2. The difficulty of D2 topped out much much much earlier than D3 with the equipment available to you. And your builds weren't all that different. Enough mainstat and strength to wear the best items, and dump the rest into Vit. But the D2 gear was very powerful compared to the highest difficulty, so variety was never going to be an issue like D3 where the difficulty scales infinitely.

D3 is not without its missteps, but I hate the build variety complaint so much.

Any specific build I should work on as a wizard? I dont need to min-max for uber endgame stuff, but something that is easy for a beginner to pick up that doesnt get woefully underpowered later on?

Ive never played d3 but im kinda tempted to jump in. Any good deals right now?

Yes. Game Stop has the D3 Battle Chest for $17.97, free in store pickup. Doesn't include the latest Necromancer DLC of course. I got physical disks, good for both PC and Mac. Of course there was still a huge download involved in the installation.
