I have to disagree with this sadly... I'm on nightmare Act 2 right now and I went through normal mode with a demon hunter partner and a barbarian partner. The Barbarian tanked like a boss and the demon hunter did DPS. I basically helped out with either if the need arose...

Now in nightmare the monk isn't as good at tanking nor DPS. It's a caught in the middle class. I actually think its one of the weaker classes right now.

I do have to do some testing tonight though. I've been running dual wield and I need to try out some shield builds. Ill check back after I try it out.

totally disagree L30 DH here and my friends DPS Monk OMFGWTFBBQPWNS everything..
time for some new gear and tactics. basically super hard to kill and packs more AOE than my DH does. and can take a hit where I die in 2 secs if something gets to me.

my Monk is super twinked out and plowing everything at L20 now as well.

hated the barb love the DH still though but the monk played and geared well is incredible.

Basically the monk is sick with the right setup.

Yeah every time I've partied with a monk I've been impressed with their survivability AND dps. Very impressed. As a wizard, I love having a monk in the group to be the meat shield. They barely need any help, but I sure as heck do...and I can do some pretty decent damage as long as I'm not being chased all over the place.

I finshed up the end of Act 3 and all of Act 4 with 1 monk, 2 wizards, 1 demon hunter, and it was a fun and pretty strong group. The monk would pull every mob on top of him from a large radius away (not sure which skill this is), I'd freeze em, and 2-3 seconds of AOE would take down the whole lot. When that combo wasn't available, the monk would just be a boss and wade into the thick of things. The only time the monk died was during a fight with a pack of champions + a yellow name and his minions that wiped our group. No one was gonna tank that group though (at the appropriate level)...had to draw them out and crowd control em.

Think it might be a good idea to start a separate thread for Diablo 3 Guest Pass requests? I still have some available (was going to save one in case a real life friend wants one), but the requests will end up burried in all the normal conversation.

Does anyone else find the chat/message system a PITA? I understand pressing enter, but tabbing through the names when there's 10+ people on is really a pain. Especially when that list is growing exponentially after posting my tag here on atot....

Yeah, coming from World of Warcraft, the chat system is just awful in comparison. To note, I don't even use any of the IM-style chat add-ons for WoW. The biggest qualm that I have is that you cannot use the mouse wheel to scroll the chat box or at least I haven't found an option to turn it on. I believe WoW doesn't do that by default either though. I use an add-on called Prat (in WoW) that turns on some of those convenience features.

I had a rare wand that I didn't need so I was going to sell it on the AH but there were literally like 40 pages of the exact same wand for sale lol. It seems like good low level items will just accumulate until the market is completely saturated and the prices will come way down.

I guess that would depend on how much people are selling it for. Some of the weapon prices on the AH are pretty darned high. I said I paid 3k for my weapons, and that was some of the lowest that I saw weapons for (some were around 10k+ buyout). Of course, there are some lower bids, but I don't have the time to sit there waiting to see if I end up winning something like that.

If there is no point to crafting (thus destroying rares for mats) then you should be able to buy a fully decked out new character for cheap once the market stabilizes.

Nah, I don't want to go that far. I feel kind of bad just buying weapons, but I was getting annoyed at constantly getting yellows from bosses that aren't for my class. That's the way Diablo typically is in regard to loot, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

whelp, so far i am having a lot of fun. playing a Demon Hunter. only level 9, cause i am taking my time and exploring every nook and cranny i can. got my first yellow last night, a pretty sweet bow. killed the Skeleton King, which is a far as the beta took me so I am pretty excited about seeing the new stuff now.
Yeah, I've got about 8 hours on my Monk so far and I think I'm only just about done with Act 1. Definitely not getting that achievement to complete Act 1 quickly.

right now i'm preferring playing solo...did co-op for a bit last night and everyone was just running ahead to the next thing while i was looking around at everything like a noob.

Yeah, I've got some friends that want to play, but I told them that I'm going to beat the game once by myself first, and that we'll meet up on Nightmare.

That's it. Use dash to initiate into a big group of monster and then hit blind while pummeling them with crippling wave. Any range monsters on the outside or things that may hurt you just dash to them again since dash has no real cooldown.

If you start to get low life hit heal or Serenity. You a pretty much un-killable in this setup. You can clear huge waves of monsters and pretty much beat down anything. The Butcher boss I just stood next to him the entire time even with the fire going off on me. Didn't matter. He couldn't hurt me at all.

I don't remember my exact setup, but it's different than yours, and I don't have two passives yet.

Left: Thousand Punches
Right: Lashing Tail Kick
1) Blind
2) Dash
3) Heal
P1) Healing per Spirit

I also had the same experience with The Butcher, but one thing that I notice is that I tend to generate far less spirit with Thousand Punches. I think it's because I kill stuff much faster with Thousand Punches, so I don't use it as much, which means less spirit generation procs. Although, my worry about poor AoE isn't really an issue as long as I keep mobs in front of me. Crippling Wave attacks all around you for its final attack, but thousand punches attacks in a cone in front of you.

I watched Method (they're a WoW hardcore raiding guild for those that don't play that MMO) kill Skeleton King on Inferno, and the Monk was pretty pivotal to their group since he's pretty much the "healer" for the game.

It'll be hard to pick between Frenzy/No Rune and Cleave/Rupture. Rupture is pretty sick.

i am level 19, and here's my skill setup right now:

frenzy
rend w/ life steal rune
revenge
leap attack w/ armor rune
ground stomp
earthquake

cant remember passive.

basically, i leap in to get +300% armor. that lets me proc revenge without taking too much damage, and i get good sustain/AOE from revenge and rend. then i ground stomp for CC, earthquake for DPS, and frenzy anyone left.

works like a champ against melee mobs

My current barb build http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/barbarian#ahYVXT!Ycd!bZZaZZ

Leap in, bash until I proc revenge, ground stomp, revenge, whirlwind/earthquake everything to death. Up through act 1 in nightmare it's working pretty well.

I'm enjoying my witch doctor right now, the soul drain skill they get is pretty sweet, if I hit 5 guys with it I have around 190 int on my level 10 guy which gives me an insane damage boost for the duration. Works pretty well with their fear spell and flaming bats, I'll just run into a big mob, boost my int then fear and start torching everything.

Aikouka,

I like crippling wave because the second AND third hit are completely around you. the first is a cone in front. Everything else hits single target for the first attack or in a straight line in front.

Most monsters in this game have the AI designed to circle around you. They want to hit on your back. Using an attack like crippling wave to hit everything is more useful in my opinion. While the damage to any single target it less, you actually do more damage in bigger packs with CW than any other skill. You also generate more spirit. More spirit = more everything.

I used to have lashing tail kick, but decided I got tired of the knockback. It's nice early on in the game, but Serenity is SOOO much better. If I do happen to get low, Popping serenity is a life saver. Not taking damage for a limited time allows me to either dash away to safety, generate more spirit to do something like dash or heal or blind or whatever. Or give you the time needed to take a few monsters out so you can heal off the globes that drop.

The other reason I don't like lashing tail kick later is because of how much bigger the packs can be. When you are surrounded by monsters 3 -6 rows deep, then lashing tail kick is going to only send the first few rows flying out of the pack. The other rows are going to collapse on you. If you did that to get breathing room, it is going to be doing that. The damage on it isn't all that much more either than your standard attack.

I also like CW for the status effects. It seriously helps when surrounded by dropping the DPS of everything around you.

I tried some of the other ability for the monk, but most of them are only so-so in my opinion. The giant bell is kind of cool, but the damage on it wasn't all that impressive for the spirit cost of it.

I did notice the nerfed the monk quite a bit since the beta I played. Still the monk is the best champ to start with in my opinion compared to the others. The other classes are fun, but the monk is the most powerful of them all. It may not have the DPS potential of the other 4, but that hardly matters with a champ that is nigh invulnerable.

Wouldn't mind trying this game myself. Don't know why they just didnt release a demo like so many others.

They wanna control gameplay completely. The "demo" is now limited time with the full game using a guest pass. When your time runs out its over.
Yet another advantage (from a corporate standpoint) of always-connected DRM. You cant milk the demo forever.

They had an open beta a few weeks back, should have gotten in on that. Or bug people for a guest pass. I think in a month or so they'll have guest passes with each new account so people can try it for a few hours or whatever.

Always-connected DRM....otherwise known as an online multiplayer game.

That's the big reason why I like it. I'm still considering applying it to my right mouse button, because I do prefer having a high single target damage attack available. The benefit I could gather from that would be considerably higher spirit since I'd be using two spirit generators.

Absolutely loving my Wiz. DPS machine! Electrocute is so satisfying to use, especially with the range it has.

Uhh, no, those two terms are NOT interchangeable.
Always-connected DRM in this case means you have to put up with online bullshit even though you only want to run a single-player game on your computer.

We expect that kind of thing from EA but not Blizzard.

a time-limited full version is probably easier to implement than having a separate build for a demo

You're correct. I shouldn't have said it like that. But in this case it's a solo-friendly online multiplayer game that many people would have rather have as a single-player-only game. Blizzard chose to design it as multiplayer first for a variety of reasons. The fact that the online requirement makes a good DRM has got to be one of those reasons, but it's still an online multiplayer game no matter how you want to play it.

that's interesting, I didn't know that at all, but I haven't played a wiz yet. I will definitly be using a swd then.

I think its STUPID LOL. I love the game. But I was lookng ALL around for a better wand. NONE to be had. No matter HOW many beasts I killed.
Then I noticed "Hey, I dont have the X thru these weaps..... OK, let me try stabbing things a little." I equip a dagger and a shield. I get the stats,

BUT.................

nope, still cast spells while holding a dagger and a shield. I have to admit, not only is that stupid, in my opinion, but it took a little luster off the game.

Cripes, I can remember back in the day if I was wearing too heavy an armor, I couldnt cast.

My wizard flat out melts faces now that I'm not longer using the level 1 wand! I dont think any other character could possibly be this powerful. I walk right into the middle of packs with diamond skin and arcane orb them once or twice and they're all dead. If they're not? I use my AOE knockback that also deals a crapload of damage. Insanely powerful.

Shock pulse runed with explosive bolts is great for grouped up mobs too. More so in dungeon corridors though. Chaining the explosions together will clear an area quickly.

The bees in Act 2.. Jesus...

I leaped into a pack of 4 of those with my barb..and quickly found myself at the nearest waypoint!

Those bees, a tree in act1 (wasn't paying attention) and some super unique that 2-shotted me are what's killed me so far
