The problem was my initial question and confusing was met without an mention of the trial to begin with. I had no idea there was even a trial that would place you in a higher greater rift, thus confusion ensued on how the system actually handles failures. You are still forced to farm another keystone (if you don't already have one), but rather than begin at level 1, you actually do a trial that places you higher.
Although it was eventually explained how to do greater rifts, you probably should have just read through the patch notes or watched a youtube video on it. Or even better, just experimented with it. When 2.1 was coming out, i read up on the patch notes but didn't quite fully understand how it all worked, but once 2.1 came out, I did a T6 rift, got my trial key, ran the trial with the same group, got a level 27 Grift key, and then beat that rift. Took maybe 20-30 min total to complete all those steps.
Also, for most folks, they should have plenty of regular rift stones available. I only had 60 when 2.1 came out, but now that i only costs 1 stone per rift, that's a lot of Trial Keystones I could get before needing to do bounties.
