Honestly even close to perm would help a ton. There are no ZDPS in AT that I know of, I have a crusader but would rather do damage.
You just need gear before you worry too much about rolls. However, rolls are the fastest way to see some immediate improvements. If you don't get what you want within a few rolls, don't blow all your resources, since most of gear needs to be replaced, anyway.
Here are my tips:
* As for things you can do immediately,
- Roll 3 sockets into the chest. Roll off the hydra or something. Stick topazes in there.
- Roll off vit or atk spd on the gloves into CHD.
- Roll armor to CC on your bracers.
- Roll vit to socket in your weapon and stick the biggest emerald you have in it.
- Roll +electrocute on pants to armor or all-res or a skill that you're actually using.
- Your amulet has +lightning. Your source is +fire. You want your +elementals to agree.
- Put a diamond or amethyst in your helm, that topaz isn't doing you any good.
- Pick a build that you want to run. This will help you focus your farming/gambling
* What you should probably focus on for now:
- Farm Act I bounties until you get the Ring of Royal Grandeur. If you don't have enough set pieces to take advantage of it yet, at least you'll have one. You'll have a lot more rift stones and you'll have gained some paragon levels.
- Once you have what you feel is a decent amount of rift stones, run regular rifts. Legendary drop rate is doubled in a rift. It doesn't mean it will start to rain legendaries, but you'll get more than if you were doing bounties, and you'll also get blood shards.
- When it comes to gambling your shards, you'll live on the armor tab. Slots where you don't have a set item, you're going to want a set item.
- (!)If you don't have the following plans, that I mention, don't worry. As you run bounties and rifts, you'll eventually kill the malevolent tormentor goblin a couple times. They drop a ton of plans.
- Craft Aughild's bracer and chest.
- Craft Captain Crimson pants and belt.
- Keep any class-specific set pieces you find. (Firebird, Vyr's, Delsere's, Tal Rasha)
- Don't break the Aughild or Crimson set bonuses until you can replace them with class specific set bonuses. You don't need a full set, but I'd recommend at least getting the 4 piece bonus.
- Party up with us in the clan. The group bonus to item drops will help you immensely, and we're usually down with dragging you through some rifts and grifts at higher difficulties.
As for for legendary gem upgrades, here's an example. To have a 100% chance of upgrading a lvl. 14 gem to 15, you must have finished at least grift level 24. Every level you fall under that is a 10% hit. So from gem level 0 to 1 is at least grift 9 or 10. Not sure exactly how the zero behaves.
I'm not to knowledgable on the Wizard in this patch, but I think you still pretty much need the 6 piece bonus for Firebird before you can just jump into T6. The other sets might get you closer (T5) with just the 4 piece.
EDIT: Took a closer look.
How do I join the clan, just search for Anandtech?
Thanks for all that! I read this last night and did some of the changes you mentioned.
I also changed my build (and got some minor upgrades, armory hasn't updated yet) and it made a huge difference in my clearing speed. I'm still tweaking it, but it now feels a lot funner than before.
I'll farm some more Act I bounties to get the ring, and do some rifts as well. Hopefully I get some legendary drops, if not to use at least to get some shards to reroll stats. All fresh out now.

The WW set is pretty awesome.
Running WW6/IK4 (physical), and I can solo 46 relatively easy. Might have to switch my BotT to esoteric or gizzard for better survivability to push higher.
I'm kind of amazed I can clear that high. Part power creep, part I've played a little too much lately.
Looking to add ancient versions of gear, and get a hellfire.
I should use my shards to get a decent wiz/crusader. They are the only classes I don't have T6-capable yet.
@*kjm
Your IKBB is crazy awesome. I think I've told you that before. Only thing I can see is the element on your Wraps should maybe be physical. You're not using any fire skills that I can see.
...and get carried.
I don't think weapon damage type is affected, although I could be wrong. I think it's purely skills that get the +elemental buff. In any case, all you'd be doing is spamming WW anyway, so the WW and CotA damage is what would get buffed. Thanks I have had 3 drop and this was the best so far. You bring up a good point though.... I will change the wraps to physical. I did re-roll the IKBB to fire if I would re-roll again to just damage is that considered physical?
Like the IK gloves idea may give it a run because I have an ancient pair and the set of bracers.
Have you tried the Eun-jang-do on your follower yet? It works great fighting the boss they sit frozen for the last 20% of their life
I had one of those weapons and debated putting it on my follower. I eventually passed. If I ever get another to drop, i might try it out. My follower is currently running a sunkeeper.
Don't farm for the RoRG, it is the most useless ring possible for a wizard. You are much better off using CoE, Unity, Focus, Restraint, or HoA. Unity + HoA for solo is ideal, you can face tank up to low 50 GRs and for parties when you have tank/cc you should be using focus/restraint.
Once I got 2 pc tals, Nilfur boots, and CoE I saw 2-3B meteors from the set bonus (fire+arcane). This was enough to essentially speed farm T6 rifts and GR30-35s. End game your Hydra does about 75% of your dps with Tasker and Theo and the serpent sparker wand, but you need a certain amount of attack speed to reach the breakpoints.

Using what build at that point?
It's much easier to play this game in groups so if you are playing completely solo you are really gimping yourself for finding gear and leveling. If you enjoy playing solo then I can respect that, but you are normally much better off just joining public games if your goal is just get geared faster.
