I was thinking about this while watching. I think it is at least partially due to his mean look. Smiling prick at the top of the ticket works better than mean prick.

Overall, I don't think Edwards fumbled or screwed up big tonight, he did what he had to do which was hold his own against Cheney. He smiled, was likeable, and presented himself well. I don't think anyone expected Edwards to win this debate, now Cheney vs. Kerry would be a much better show. Hell, we should just do a candidate swap.

Yeah for most of that I was thinking this guys UNDER Bush.

Although I guess Cheney's really in charge?

It the UK the deputy Prime Minister's role really is quite negligable, obviously not in the US.

I'd call this a VERY close debate, but a slight Cheney victory. That said, considering that Sen Edwards has never engaged in a head-to-head debate, I thought he more than held his own, and I'd have to think the night was a disappointment for Rove et al for that reason. This one can't give much steam to either side, so I think Kerry's momentum from the first debate remains.

THis is an easy question. Cheney made last second sleaze attacks and Edwards had to go back and respond to them to uncover the lies.

I posted this in the other thread, but since this is the official thread:

------------------------------------------------------

Cheney, by far.

Although I am a Republican, I actually worked for John Edwards during his Presidential campaign. While I was expecting to see Cheney take the upper hand in the debate, it shocked me how politically inept John Edwards is.

Cheney made the comment that, as President of the Senate, tonight was the first time he had met Edwards. What does that show in terms of leadership? What gives me confidence to vote for someone who hasn't been in the Senate a majority of the time--how do I know that he won't do the same as Vice-President of the United States?

Cheney presented the facts. He didn't seem flustered, as I personally thought Edwards did. Cheney answered the questions with facts, instead of rhetoric, as John Edwards did.

Edit: As to the CNN poll, let's wait until the morning. The poll was just added, and as of right now, is not accurate and holds no ground in my opinion. Let's also do something that many do not: let's compare many polls, not just one.

I missed the gay marraige talk, but kudos to cheney for backing away from it. Big  to Edwards for that underhanded assault on the President using Cheney's daughter. Cheney should have mentioned how he plans to help the rising obesity rates in the US and cited Edwards's wife.

That's BS, and I imagine you know it. It's not common to have a VP who disagrees with a core plank of his president's platform (as VP Cheney does on this issue), and Edwards had to point that out. He was completely respectful to Mary Cheney and her relationship with her father (hence VP Cheney's thanks).

Edwards took some shots at Cheney from the getgo; its his own fault that he can't make a comeback in 30 seconds.

That said, Edwards didn't goof, which was all the Dems were likely hoping for. We should get a couple pts off this, but not enough to make up for Thursday.

Cheney won it 60-40 imo. If they concentrated more on foreign policy it probably would have been 80-20.

Early on Edwards just looked outmatched and like a guy throwing out slingers in hope one sticks. I find Cheney to be a very effective debater and public speaker. Lucky for dems he is not doing the debates against Kerry.

Domestic issues it seemed to die down a bit and I would call it about even.

Edwards did too much of answering last questions answer and made other mistakes that made him look nervous and unprepared. I think his early jabs that were met head on by Cheney and destroyed put him on the defensive all night.

I dont think VP debates really mean much when it comes to the final tally. But this will give Bush an idea of what to expect come Friday. Maybe this time he wont fumble his words as much and be able to lay a few on Kerry to get the momentum back in his corner.

btw good to see the usual suspects on here throwing mud at people who think Cheney won. Bravo, you guys are making Kery proud.

The way you've been repeating the same variation on a theme over and over in this thread, it's apparent you've had far too much already. No more for you, Bogart.

Meh. I don't think its Edwards place to point that out on what is obviously a sensitive issue for the otherwise stoic Cheney. To tell you the truth the question shouldn't have been asked in the first place.

But I think he is showing more leadership potential than GWB did 4 years ago

The Debate was so close that each sides Diehards can feel that their guy won. I think most Undecideds are going to not choose one way or another from this Debate. It was a Push.

Boo hoo. I thought he handled it very sensitively, actually (hence VP Cheney's gratitude).

Any moderator who failed to ask about a core platform issue on which the VP disagrees with the President wouldn't be doing his or her job.

The Freepers are intentionally skewing online polls towards Edwards to make them tainted and unusable as news tomorrow.

Typical obfuscation tactics. Just like Cheney. Slide a knife in there and when asked a substantive question forget about it.

Am I missing something? I don't read it that way. That would be the all-time stupidest spin effort in electoral history - people who click on CNN.com, or watch it on TV, will just hear the results, not about the ballot-box-stuffing effort.
