I have SP2 installed on y M6805 without a problem. I don't think it's hardware or drivers.

I'm guessing you are running the default install of WinXP Home that the machine came with. It seems most of the people having trouble are running WinXP Pro. I have heard that XP Home is more forgiving with hardware/drivers problems.

On another note, I run my laptop at work in an NT Domain environment, so I have to run Win2k or XP Pro. My initial bootup delays may be related to booting without being connected to the company network. I would think it wouldn't look for the domain controller when logging on to the machine locally, but maybe there is a service running under a domain account (or maybe XP just looks for the domain controller regardless).

Aratharn - I tried the shortcut keys today and they all work fine. Good luck man.

I haven't had any serious problems with SP2 on my M6809 (still running Home Edition till I can get Pro cheap on campus), but there are several little annoyances that I can't figure out, mostly stuff just not loading. For example, when I click the speaker icon in the system tray, the volume slider no longer comes up, nor does the panel when I double-click. If I try to click anything in Administrative Tools, nothing will open - nor will they if I run it command-line style (e.g. services.msc). Shortcut keys still work. I'm sure there are more glitches, I just haven't run into them.

Anyone else experience this, or have any thoughts? I'm fairly certain it's related to SP2 somehow - the problems vanished when I uninstalled, and came back when I reinstalled.

Chief72, I justed loaded SP2 on my m6811 and had no problems. I checked for your problems, and I did not have them. I checked standby and the speedswitching in AC and DC, all worked properly.

I am using the stock XP home that came with the M6811. I have updated to the Omega Drivers, and have loaded powernow. Otherwise, stock.

a lot of people on the amd forums are reporting that SP2 works fine if you have the M6809/M6811 bios. So for those 6805/07 owners out there, flash your bios and you shouldn't have a problem running it. I'm gonna give it a go myself.

Thanks! Had time to install SP2 on my M6805 now and...wow--it all works with the M6811 BIOS.

Interestingly, I also had sent a request for help to eMachines and received what looked like a point-and-click generated-sorry-it's-your problem response:

"I see that you would like to correct an issue with your M6805 eMachines notebook not working correctly under a new Windows XP Service Pack 2 Operating System. [...] Please be informed that eMachines does not support the changing of the Operating System. You may do so but remember that any software that you would wish to install would be considered third party software. eMachines does not warrant or support third party software. We do not have the information available to answer software usage questions, or work with third party software or hardware compatibility issues. "

Wow, that was so helpful. In my help request I had copied the ACPI error message from the event log recommending a BIOS update but it was totally ignored. Later in the response was a suggestion to make sure my devices (video, audio, modem) were supported by Windows XP. Wow! I sent them back an e-mail with the solution but I doubt that will change anything.

Thanks so much "justshawnf" as you have made my week!

Funny (well, not really) - I had a similar experience when I emailed emachines looking for the latest Broadcom drivers - I told them that I checked Broadcom's site and that the drivers weren't there. Emachine's reply said something to the effect 'Your NIC is made by Broadcom, check their website for updated drivers." I should write back and tell them the Dell ones work pretty good.

I'm just glad I have a 'real' M6811. I won't have to do a BIOS upgrade when I finally do D/L SP2. I like to wait a while after a major update comes out before loading it up. I'd rather download it once, with all the bugs corrected rather than have to download endless patches and fixes afterwards.

My M6805 is a newer version with the updated BIOS, so I guess I got lucky that the hinge cracked on my first one so I could get a new one.

If anyone wants to know, I got a 9470 on 3dMark2001 SE with my M6811 using the Omega drivers and the stock clock settings.

Funny, I just used the exact same text on a thread at notebookforums.com lol. At any rate, I never posted the question here and perhaps someone here may have some insight. As of a few days ago, everytime I boot my computer, the CPU voltage goes to 1.45 instead of 1.4. Has anyone else experienced this on his/her machine? I can turn it back down with clockgen of course, but would prefer to find out what is causing it. Has anyone else experienced this problem or know what I may be able to do to rectify it?

Anyone using a 64 Bit version of Linux on there M680x? I have Mandrake 10.0 and was thinking about giving it try to see how much faster it is.

I am not that impressed with the speed of my M6805 versus my desktop AMD XP 2000+ PC that I am trying to retire to my data center but I am starting to feel it may just be the HD as I have the 4200RPM model.

Perhaps my next upgrade should be a 7200 drive?

I just replaced my drive last week. It makes a WORLD of difference in the "feel" of the machines speed.

Yea... that is what I thought... I can hear the 4200 hard drive hitting like mad even when I just receive email with Outlook... which even takes longer... so I figured a faster drive would fix it. now.. were to get a cheap one...?..???? ;-)

When I bought mine, the cheapest I found was newegg and zipzoomfly. They were both identical. zipzzomfly was $183 w/ free shipping and newegg was $182 with $1 shipping. Up until then, zipzoomfly wasstaying a little cheaper. Oneof those two would probably be your best bet. I wound up purchasing from newegg since I already do a ton of business with them already.

From where, exactly? eMachines pathetic website still doesn't list a single driver or BIOS update for the M6805, M6807, M6809, M6810 or M6811 laptops.

Simply turn the splash screen off in Bios. It is listed as "show diagnostic screen" or something like that. Enable that.
