just got this system refurbished. installed winXP pro, but cannot find a driver for "network controller" (as listed in device manager), even though my VIA Rhine II ethernet card is recognized just fine. any clues? can't seem to figure out if anything on the drivers CD can fill in the gap.

You gotta wait for the Omega modded Catalyst drivers... hopefully they'll be out reasonably soon. Regular Cats don't work with mobile GPUs.... kinda retarded I think. But the Omega Drivers are sweet.

*Canadian eMachine RMAs

I have been following this thread for a while now. I ended up purchasing a M6805 laptop in Canada from tigerdirect.ca for $1632 cdn because of the good info on this board about these laptops. The laptop is a nice machine. However the cooling fan started to die shortly after purchase (about a week). It would sound like a baseball card was stuck in the fan blades.

I thought I would post this info for unsuspecting Canadian customers such as myself on how eMachines RMAs are handled, as it is different from our US counterparts.

I called the Canadian emachines number supplied for warranty repair. I was advised it would take around 5-6 business days to turn the machine around via FedEx (laptop from me-emachines-repair-back to me). eMachines would send out a box for me to ship the laptop back in. I thought great, that?s not too bad.

The box did not show up for 13 days. It turns out they had the wrong ship to address and the courier company decided to try out different combinations of the address to see if they could find me. After 3 or 4 days they gave that up and called me to get the right address to ship the box to. (This was a sign of what lay ahead, thank goodness the laptop was not in the box already)

I shipped the laptop out as indicated in the kit supplied by emachines. As the courier picked up the package from my shop they said to my shipping staff you realize this will take 5 days to ship as the preprinted form has ground indicated not air. The shipping staff did not know any better so they let it go as is.

I called emachines to find out what the deal was. They did not quite seem to know and had to ?escalate? the RMA as Canadian RMAs are not apart of their US system. Canadian RMAs do not work via the emachine website either. After a few frustrating calls to emachines I decided to share the low down on Canadian RMAs:

- All Canadian RMA?s are sub-contracted out to a company called D1 (DecisionOne) in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

-The Canadian emachines support number is routed into emachines US support center. The US tech center has not been provided with any information on Canadian RMAs. The CSRs assume the Canadian RMA are handled exactly the same way as US RMAs and will provide US RMA information unknowingly to Canadian customers. This includes US turnaround times, procedures and ship times, Courier company information.

-The emachines website cannot handle Canadian RMA numbers and cannot provide updates on status via the website.

-The emachines CSRs cannot access information directly either as the Canadian RMAs are in another computer system because the repairs have been sub contracted out. The CSRs need to ?escalate? to a supervisor to have them login into the system to provide the CSRs with limited information. The ?other? system freezes quite often and is usually not accessible most of the time.

-eMachine customers cannot contact D1 directly. It must be done through the eMachines call center.

-The Canadian shipping is done through Purolator ground not FedEx as in the US. (basically it does not get any more ghetto than Purolator  when it comes to courier companies) Shipping alone will take 5 days one way via ground. This cannot be changed even if the customer is willing to pay extra.

At the end of the day Canadian RMA?s will take around about a month to turn around.

The Breakdown:

5 Business days to ship via Purolator to D1

D1 has 10 business days to repair the laptop once received

5 days to ship the laptop back from D1

What is worse is if the laptop had a complete failure where I could not use it I need to tack on 5 extra business days to wait for the kit to be sent to me to send the laptop out in the first place

I thought 10 business days while a little long is acceptable; I think a whole month is totally unacceptable. I expect to get about 18 months of service life out of this machine and 1 whole month of it is being spent in the ?shop? while I have nothing else to use in the mean time. To top it off emachines is not really setup to provide information of the status of the RMA unless several calls are made and the infomation is limited at best.

I thought I would share the current status of emachines repair service for Canadians. I like the laptop but if I had known about this long delay in repairing them I would have given this purchase a second thought as a Canadian customer.

I have my emachines for 5 months, love it very much.
Sometime ago I noticed that the battery runs uot to fast. I saw that even when I'm working on battery the CPU speed indicates 1.8GHz in My Computer \ Properties... and in AMDinfo tool.

I onced wanted it to be like that. But I don't wan't it anymore. I want it to run at 800Mhz on battery.
I don't know what I changed to make it work like that. I sure didn't intend it , I never changed the bios and all that stuff.

It doesn't matter if I change the power scheme from "Always On" to "Max Power".

How can I get it back to the previous settings?
please help me...

Also make sure you don't have the AMD PowerNow software installed. I've successfully transitioned my notebook to use full speed on batteries and back to only 800 MHz simply by installing or removing the PowerNow software as needed. The PowerNow software has to be the version for mobile processors and Windows 2000 in order for it to work.

HOLY CR@P!!!! DOWNLOAD THE OMEGA CATS 4.8 NOW!!! I just installed them in my M6805 and ran Doom 3 timedemo. Before 4.8 (I was using 4.7) I got 30.9 FPS at 800x600 in high (no shadows). Now at the same setting I'm getting 41 FPS!!! Good LAWD the performance difference is CRAZY. GET THEM NOW!!! NOW NOW NOW!!! Verify my results (M6805 @1.8ghz, 1.25gb ram, R9600 @ 425/222). This is WAAAAYYY too good to be true.

::EDIT:: Ran timedemo at 1024x768 @Ultra Quality. It's giving me 30.9 FPS first pass and 35.5 fps second pass!! : passes out:: heh heh Btw i'm using the texture tweaks for D3. These results are with Vsync ON.

Thank you for the info, FRAM.

I bought my m6809 from Portland, OR and I live here in BC.
I am not sure if the BestBuy or the Futureshop here follow BestBuy Portland's extended warranty. The dude told me that they do. I'm not sure.

I just bought a M6810 from Best Buy. I'm an employee and got a great deal ($1385) plus a $100 rebate .

It's a great desktop replacement. Batteries last about 2:45 for me. Plenty of power for programming, gaming, school etc. I'm starting the overclock phase of testing and will report back.

Great thread here guys. Keep it up.

UPDATE:

The laptop showed up today at 8:30am. It was repaired and shipped via Air on Friday. This changes the 5 days return shipping from D1 to overnight.

eMachines customer service called after I received the notebook to let me know it was repaired but they were unsure when it was due to be shipped out. They were still working on finding out the shipping details. They were shocked I already had the laptop back.

I am happy to get the laptop back 13 days later but there are still serious information issues at eMachines as my previous post outlined. Hopefully they will be able to get this resolved soon.

The cooling fan works great now. The fan does not run for long times as before and it is quite a bit quieter

Regarding Future Shop/Best Buy: The Corporate office for Future Shop/Best Buy is located in Burnaby. With Best Buy stores opening soon in BC I would suspect handling your return if the need was to arise should not be an issue. The RMA I did was for eMachines factory warranty not the extended warranty which would be handled differently by Best Buy/Future Shop?s system.

No there is no inf for the monitor. I tried to bring up driver details in the Display Properties and it said "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device."

Overclocking update, vide only goes to 348core/236mem which pulled 10870 3dmarks. Its acceptable I suppose.

Used clockgen to net an easy 10% overclock, haven't pushed it to its limit yet...

Try turning the memory down. When I keep my memory lower, I can get the core a lot higher. When pushing the memory up, I also cannot run my core very high. At 425/225 with processor @ 2.2GHz and memory at 200(400)MHz with 2t disabled, I can edge past 13k in 3dmark '01

SWEEEEEET!

12171 marks in '01 with a 2.2Ghz CPU/183.5Mhz MEM, 426 core/236 mem overclock.

Thanks all.

Overclocking is the way to go

Now hopefully this won't burn up anything
