If you really want to unlock the CPU so it runs 1.8ghz on battery, overload your battery and be very unhappy with the problems that will occure then simply go to AMDs website and download the latest driver for the Athlon64 DESKTOP CPU (NOT the Mobile). When you install and reboot you will be running 1.8Ghz no matter what, enjoy the heat in your lap and the shortery battery life.

Hi,

I asked to many Arima's manufacturer laptop (same as emachine M68XX) if their notebooks are compatible with the Turion processor.

See their reponse below :

*************** QDI *****
Hi,

The W-730 is compatible with the AMD Turion Processor (35W) however,
you
will not get any extra battery life from using it.

Regards,

QDI Support.

*************** TARGA *****

Dear Mr. XXXX,

thank you for your inquiry to the technical support.

It is very unlikely that the new AMD Turion is compatible to this
Notebook.
However, we had no opportunity to test this, so we cannot be sure of
this at
the moment.

If you have any further questions, please use the web form on our
website:
www.service.targa.co.uk/supportform.php whilst using your correct
serial
number.
You can also find answers to frequently asked questions on
www.service.targa.co.uk and useful tips for the usage of your device as
well.

Have a nice day.

Yours sincerely,

Stephan Heisse

*************** EMachine *****

Dear XXX :

Thank you for contacting eMachines.

I see that you are inquiring if your M6811 eMachines notebook is
compatible with an ?AMD Turion processor?.

I understand how this type of issue could have caused you some
concerns. However, concerning notebook device upgrades, only the RAM or memory
stick is the upgradeable part in your system.

The processor is usually part of the motherboard, so we cannot change
or upgrade the device itself.

I understand this can be rather frustrating and I hope this brief reply
has provided you the information to deal with your concern in the best
possible way.

Should you require further assistance with your eMachines system,
please feel free to send another message. Your comments and suggestions are
welcome.

Sincerely,
Bernard

**************************************

I've contact Targa again (my laptop manufacturer) for further explanations.
Wait and see...

I have had both the m6805 and the gateway 7422gx. You can run your processor speed at any speed you choose in multiples of 200 using the rmclock utility. I've been using it over the last year and half, and it is exceptional.

OK, I am now running Windows x64 Professional. It took me a while to find drivers that would work and be able to use the native resolution screen size (1280X800). If you need them they are at http://www.ngohq.com Also I was using the 64-bit Synaptics driver, but found that the mouse motion was really jerky; uninstalled the driver and works great with the default. The only device that I do not have running (no driver) is the modem. All the blue screens that I had with XP Pro have now gone away. Not one bit of trouble. Just wish companies would start pumping out more 64-bit programs faster. Going to get the FarCry 64-bit patch later and give it a try.

This machine (M6805) never ceases to surprise me. A year and a half old and I'm running Battlefield2 on it with no trouble.

I overclock the CPU and graphics card but without increasing the voltage. The machine is very stable and will still outperform most new laptops in it's original price range. I upgraded to 768MB RAM.

EA games says BF2 requires a minimum of 128MB video RAM to play and the 9600 mobility only has 64MB but it plays very smooth even at native resolution of 1280x800 with all the settings set to low. Even at low settings the game looks fantastic.

I have also run the game at one half native resolution 640x400 wide aspect with 4X anti-aliasing to smooth it out. Frame rates are faster and very smooth but text is difficult to read and detail is fuzzy and washed out.

Couterstrike Source runs nicely at native as well as Unreal Tournament 2004. The display is not the highest quality so running at other than native resolution doesn't look so great.

Due to some odd issues that have recently cropped up in my M6805 I'm planning on reinstalling the OS from scratch. As such I'm going around and grabbing updates to all my drivers and software, but I'm stumped on the wireless driver. Currently I'm using a Dell TrueMobile 1300 driver that I started using since I could not get the stock Broadcom driver to run in WPA mode and supposedly that card is the same as the Broadcom just with a different name. It would be nice to be able to run a upgraded driver that is more representative of the actual wireless card, but I cannot find any Broadcom drivers around.

So what driver are you all using to drive the wireless card that also supports WPA?

Thanks!

Anyone know how I can make this happen ?

Native resolution is 1280* 800 on mine.

I can reach it with all kind of video driver version.

Whatever happened to the cracked hinge problem? Did people who didn't have it initially develop a crack eventually?

All of this laptop have this problem.

You just have to return it to the manufacturer, and it never happended again.

I had a cracked hinge. RMA'd it, and was rewarded with a flickering screen instead. And the cracked hinge still happened again, about 1/4 as bad

My M6811 had cracked plastic around the hinges, so E-Machines replaced the screen (had brightness issues).

I reloaded the machine before sending it back and after I installed all the AMD drivers and utilities, I was able to get it to read MHZ/GHZ over 800MHZ. I had great heat problems after setting the computer to POWER ON all the time. Dropped it down to max battery and reduced heat issues until my cooling stand arrives.

How the heck do you tear apart the M6811? Don't want to screw up and break something, but after removing the screws on the bottom and attempted to separate the bottom and top sections. It did not want to pull apart from the middle section of the laptop. Wereshark's pictures are not very helpful on tearing apart the laptop, but good idea of what to expect on the insides? Do you need to remove the LCD screen and how to do that?

Thanks.

I also couldn't successfully open up this thing. I tried but was afraid of breaking something. It's not easy.

ATi Video drivers: You must use Omega drivers if you want to play the latest games. ATi does issue mobile drivers with the new Catalyst but they must be officially supported by the manufacturer or they will refuse to install on your machine. Of course eMachines/Gateway never got on the bandwagon and I haven't heard a way to hack the installer. Anyway, The Omega drivers are the latest catalyst and they work fantastic.

Native resolution: 1280x800. Anything else and your screen will look fuzzy. You must have the original video drivers (old and obsolete) or third party drivers like Omega to get this resolution. The latest Catalyst drivers from ATI WILL NOT work in this laptop.

The cracked hinge issue: Mine developed a crack on the left hinge about a couple months ago. It took a year and a half to happen but I guess it's inevitable. Just cosmetic and has no effect on the opening and closing of the monitor except for a slight but annoying popping sound when closing.

SP2 and BIOS update: There are many possible BIOS updates that will work on this laptop. The one I used is from an Acer laptop and all the info can be found earlier on this thread. eMachines finally released an official one also which is pretty much the same. You must update the original BIOS to install SP2.

Update: I just sold my eMachines M6805 for $550 US to a friend. My Sager 5720 with the 7800GTX is on order. It has been a faithful system but it's time to move on.

Not sure about the late bloomers, but I bought my 6810 in September '04, had both hinges crack 2 or 3 months later, got it replaced in November. Unfortunately, my right hinge seems to have cracked again as of about July. Also, I've noticed the last month or so that the screen has been slightly flickering, almost imperceptibly.

What's the most recent time anyone has had their hinge crack repaired? Also, anyone had it repaired twice? And not sure if this counts toward their 3 strikes lemon policy. I've got the 2 year warranty on it (can add a 3rd year thru my credit card for something like $50-100 if I feel like it, not a bad deal) so I can afford to wait and see if the flickering gets worse over time.

Also, just curious, anyone had Emachines replace the battery under warranty? When I originally bought it one of their tech support people told me that was covered, just wondered if that was true.

Random thoughts from a happy owner...

It plays Doom3 at 640x480 so it will probably play Q4 but I wouldn't expect competition level frame rates.

You will certainly need good video drivers like the latest from Omega and overclocking the video card will help also.

Anyone's CPU fan starting to make noises? Any recommendations for fixing it?

I've started hearing a grinding/clicking noise coming from the fan. Its coming from the larger CPU fan (the one closest to the ESC-key corner). It only makes this noise some of the time. Typically, after a cold boot and once the cpu warms up to operating temps and the fans kicks on the first time. However once spinning for a bit (30sec to a minute), the noise goes away and seldom comes back (the fan is still on, but the noise has dissappeared). Any ideas what could be causing this?

I have disassembled the heatsink assembly and both fans. I cleaned up the fan fins, vents, etc thoroughly to remove all dirt and dust, but the noise is still there. Next step will be to try to find a replacement fan, unless someone else has another idea?
