I have no idea if you can get the hinges. I'm pretty sure they're a part of the LCD panel housing, so you'd actually need a new screen to replace the hinges. It is only a cosmetic issue as far as I know, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Well, Best Buy finally replaced my trusty old M6805 with a new Gateway MX7527 through their no-lemon policy (Boy, am I glad I bought that extended warranty!). Same form factor with a WHOLE lot more power.

Mobile Athlon 64 4000+ (2.6 GHz)
1GB PC2700 DDR RAM
120GB 4200RPM hard drive
128MB Mobility Radeon X600
Dual Layer DVD burner

The innards of this machine are completely different though (VIA chipset on the M6805, ATI on the MX7527) so I'm pretty much starting from scratch on tweaking it, but ATI Tool does work just fine. I'll run benchmarks if anyone is interested.

excellent, I purchased a two-year warranty through squaretrade (which seems to be a very good warranty) for an additional $80. The auction company covers the first thirty days, the squaretrade warranty covers two years starting on day 60... So I gotta be careful during day 30-60 haha. Either way total I paid was $620 for what looks to be an excellent laptop with a two-year warranty.

Well here I am VIA my new m6810! My question is what batteries (besides emachine) will work in this? I want to buy an extra battery and charger but I don't want to spend the money on emachines and don't trust ebay sometimes Id rather go through new egg.

anyone know how to get the processor to throttle? Mine doesn't do it, and last time I tried to install a k7 specific driver it crashed.

Ok I've had an eMachine m6809 for like 6 months now, bought it second hand off ebay.

It was working great until a little while ago when the graphics card stated to hiccup. Showing artifacts when playing games and dvds and the windows loading screen is distorted.

I'm pretty certain it is the graphics card, i've done a little reading, and that means i have to replace the motherboard. only problem is i live in New Zealand. I've had a look on ebay for second hand boards but most don't ship overseas. is there any other way i can get a new mobo or fix this problem?

Has anybody gotten wireless to work in Ubuntu without usind ndiswrapper on a M6805?!??!

Oh well, I went ahead and used ndiswrapper. I removed and blacklisted the bcm43xx module and then followed the ndiswrapper instructions on ubuntuguide.org. I'm now managing my wireless with network-manager (and the network-manager-gnome applet) with no problems. It even works with with 802.11g.

Yes, I replaced my original HD with a 100gig 7200rpm Seagate. It's actually very easy as long as you're adept at installing your Operating System of choice (Windows XP Pro in my case) and have a complete collection of drivers burned to a CD-R.

Just pop the HD out, remove it from it's little case-frame, set the new one in and you're good to go. Put in a bootable CD in the CDROM and you're all set.

The only problem I have is now, my computer is slightly unreliable coming out of Hibernate mode; which is more likely something to do with my drivers. 1 out of 4 times, when coming out of Hibernate, the progress bar reaches the end of the screen and the machine just hangs until power-off and reboot. It never has any problem on cold-boot.

Performance wise, the faster speed drives DO make a nice difference.

I've also bumped my total RAM to 1gig as well by replacing the "behind the keyboard" stick. That was trickier than it sounds.

Maybe someday I'll glue down the monitor cable and stop the flickering as well...
