Question:

I have a Dlink DWL-2000AP 54G access point, and after some period time of being connected to it, it stops serving out a wireless signal and I have to go to an Ethernet-linked machine, enter the AP's config page and click the APPLY button (as though you were saving a setting) to get it to sort of 'reset' so it serves out again. This happens very frequently without end.
I know lots of people here say dlink is total crap and this kind of proves it to me, but is there some setting I am overlooking?

Tech support said 'if youre connecting many machines or transferring large files, change the preamble setting to short on all devices' but I am usually the only laptop connected, and just browsing the Net when it drops...

I'm currently testing a Linksys 54g Router (WRT54G) with 128bit WEP enabled for someone and I've noticed it cutting out on me often also even with the signal always displaying as excellent. However, I am still running through different tests (range, interference, etc.) but I'll get back to you if I notice anything suspicious.

Who says DLink is total crap?!? I've had a wired DLink router as a backbone to my network for almost three years now and I've only had to reset it.....at the most, twice..... And its not because of light usage either.

Also, the drive seems to make very light grind noise every once in a while. It doesn't sound menacing, more like some sort of drive head reset or recalibration. Are you experiencing the same?

Nothing on mine that I've noticed. It does put out more vibration than the original drive, which I suppose is expected. The drive cradle in this machine doesn't have any padding or damping into it, that I can tell. In the 5205-s705 I used to have, there was a nice rubber gasket around the drive, which helped isolate much of the noise/vibration.

You might check out this site,

I've been playing around with the power booster application, and will try to get the feature tool to work as well. feature tool wants to be stuck on a floppy disk by itself, though, which is kind of a problem for me, since I don't have a floppy drive handy. Hopefully I can build a floppy on a desktop and then just pull the program off.

I tried the feature tool. The settings for the 5k80 (original drive) were the same for the 7k60.
The performance is REALLY BAD. It took 25 minutes to boot windows XP.

Has anyone installed Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 1) on the M6805? I have updated to Service Pack 2, which took 5 hours

The hard drive light is on constantly, even when nothing is runnig. I keep wanting to think this is down to the VIA drivers or the bios, but I don't know where to look.

Any suggestions?

Try taking the hard drive out and putting it back in. Make sure the contacts are clean and there isn't any debris inside of the slot for the drive and reinstall it in there.

Finally got around to GPU overclocking, and my CPU was only overclocked to 1950mhz.

I had that issue again with clocking the CPU too high, but somehow windows magically managed to recover and booted back up fine. I am VERRRY grateful for that!

pumped up my CPU to somewhere around 1985mhz or so... got 3dmark01 score of 11557 this time around.

The M6805 is a computer like any other. If you don't mind opening up your laptop to get into it and if you happen to find a DVD burner that will fit in the compartment (you'll have to make sure by its dimensions) or be lucky enough to find someone that is selling one on ebay exactly for the M6805/M6807, then it should work just fine.

As far as just swapping a drive out and putting a new one in there without opening up the system (like the modular drives that Dell has), then that won't be possible.

But... it's.... an E-Machine...

When I worked at Best Buy we made fun of customers that bought e-machines because they break down faster than cyrix cpu's....

Yeah.....Well, I remember back in the early 90's when we used to make fun of AMD because of its inferior processor performance also. Things change.

Run the becnhmarks in the *ell and we will compare..... as our M680x goes from 9200 to almost 12000 in 3dmark 2k1 se build 330...... it depends on the owner

Edit:

However, let gather results from real world games. M680x owners, start posting results Also, keep these numbers in mind:

M6805 with a 7K60 as hard drive gets 21.2 in business winstone 2004, and 26.8 in multimedia content creation winstone 2004.....

For those of you with this laptop...

I'm looking to replace a 4-year old ThinkPad, and had pretty much intended to get another ThinkPad to replace it. But the $1400 range is a low-end T series or mid-range R series.

Now this thing has come out and it's calling to me.

For those of you who have it, I know it's obviously fast, but do you feel you've made a good decision to get it? What's your overall happiness level with your purchase?

Yes, but there aren't very good video drivers available or drivers for the wireless LAN.

I'm really happy with mine, now when use my desktop I miss the extra screen real estate from the wide screen. The only nagging bug that I've found is the CPU is locked at 800MHz on battery power. If I could stuff a Raptor and an FX5900 into this thing it would probably be as fast as my desktop.
