Yeah, unfortunately being a white middle-class male means little or no financial aid (except loans of course) so until I get something better than my slightly above minimum wage job, that's the way it'll be.Originally posted by: Slappy00

I got it my "local" circuit city.... They had 2 of them (6805). When I walked in the sales guy was trying to sell a sub $1000 lappie to a couple, and trying hard. they didn't buy it. I was close by looking at the machines behind the glass, and I saw this white box witht he Athlon 64 logo..... He tought I was just staring, as he approached me a little dissapointed because they didn't buy.....
- Can I help you sir? (he didn't look very convinced....)
- Yes, I am taking one of those... (points to the M6805)
- Which one? That?
- Yes, the eMachines M6805
- The one with the new chip? You want to see it? (gets excited)
- No, I want to take one home...
- You want it? Do you know about the chip that is has inside?
- Yes, I have been waiting for a machine like this several months.
- (calls the manager very excited) I have a customer that wants to buy a laptop with the new chip......
The manager comes (by the way, I'd hit it....), she gives us the laptop and he repeats again "This is the one with the new 64 bits chip".... He was talking during the sale very excited about the machine and the 64 bits chips..... he also got really happy for the sale.
I was surprised by how knowledgeable he was... and he got excited also
Benchmarks to follow, but will be SLOW (3 kids to take care of, and let them "help me" with the benchmarks is not in my plans....)
Alex
That's unacceptable Alex. Those 3 kids can wait...we need benchmarks NOW!

Yesterday when the kids were sleeping, I played with the toy....
3DMark 2001SE on AC power: 9170 average the standard test (1024x768x32, no AA, no AF)
3DMark 2001Se on battery: 3230 average
My laptop also exhibits the behavior to run at 800 MHz on battery NO matter what you are doing. I already e-mailed eMachines requesting a new BIOS
Overall feels very strong, but the hard drive is just a bottleneck. My presario 2100Z feels more responsive (40gnx in the 2100Z versus DK23FA in the M6805....) But once the 7K60 arrives this puppy should put the 2100Z in its place
Screen looks beautiful, but I have a dead pixel in the bottom of the screen
The 9170 score in 2dmark 2001se seems low. My barton 2500+ with radeon 9600 scores 200 points lower..... and I thought that the mobility parts are supposed to be 9600 PRO..... Now, to have a fair perspective, a 3000+ mobile will perform worse than a 3000+ desktop.... clock speed will help more than cache, and the 3200+ should break the 10,000 marks with the same video card.
By the way, Does anyone know the clock speed of the mobility parts?

Overall, the machine is superb. $1550 don't get you this kind of performance anywhere else..... not even at a close price. Granted, it won't beat the bigger guns, and it won't even touch the Envy M:855 3400+ with 128 M10 pro, but I would love to see a machine within 20% of its price to come close in performance. Replace the hard drive with a 7K60 and you got a very potent machine.
I installed yesterday winstone 2004 (business and content creation). I will test it with the 4200 rpm hard drive before I replace it with the 7K60, and then report the results

Are you guys getting the extended warranties on these machines? ANd if so does swapping the hard drive void the warranty?
Also is the powernow problem something that will definately be resolved? I will most liekly use this on AC power, but when i need to go mobile, I don't want an 800Mhz proc holding me back.

I couldn't find any information on the web on the HDD speed so I called emachines direct. They verified that the drive is a 4200 rpm 60GB. The tech then let me know that to remove and swap the drive only requires removing one screw and not dismantling the entire machine. He also let me know that because of this the warranty on the rest of the machine would still be in effect and only the new drive would not be covered.
One other tidbit. The tech also verified that the information on Circuitcity's website of shared video memory is incorrect. The 64MB 9600 is dedicated memory.
Hope that helps!

Anyone know if these things will throw a fit if you try installing Linux on them?
BTW, I'm getting mine either Saturday or Sunday! I would have it right now if being 18, student loans and a lack of credit weren't reasons for being denied for a Best Buy credit card. Talk about a low blow.
Not hopefully, I got it today !Originally posted by: alexruiz

Well, hopefully you will get it later
