I have an M6805 with the 4200 rpm Hitachi drive. It shows up under device manager as HITACHI_DK23FA-60. Using HD Tach 2.70 I got the following results:

Random Access Time: 19.6 ms
Read Burst Speed: 88.7 MB/s
Read Speed: max 31.3 MB/s, min 16.8 MB/s, avg 24.8 MB/s
CPU Utilization: 33.4% (wow, seems high)

Could someone post similar benchmark results for the 5400 rpm drive and (pretty please) the 7200 rpm 7K60 "upgrade" drive?

Thanks,

Random Access Time: 18.3 ms
Read Burst Speed: 90.3 MB/s

CPU Utilization: 37.2%
5400 RPM drive

That's quite interesting. I calculated the percentage of change from our values.

Performance change from 4200 rpm to 5400 rpm drive:
Random Access Time: -6.63%
Read Burst Speed: +1.80%
Read Speed: max +7.35%, min +3.57%, avg +4.03%
CPU Utilization: +11.4%

The 5400 rpm drive makes nice gains but uses a touche more CPU. The access time seems most significant because it is probably perceived as responsiveness more than any other factor. Assuming the improvement is linerar to a 7200 rpm drive, access time could then drop as low as 16.4 ms. Wonder if that is worth the required $226 over at zipzoomfly for the 7K60.

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me if there is any heating problem with M6805/6807 laptops. I know some other DTR laptops get really hot and u cannot really put it on the lap for too long. Anything like that with these two laptops.

Thanks

hopefully since its a MOBILE Athlon 64 it consumes a lot less power and hence outputs less heat...

I'm trying to convince my dad to let me buy one. I went to BB this morning and their rebates offer expire today... I'm off to college in a few months (im a HS senior) and this machine is all the power I really want when Im away from my desktop!

Has anyone put 64-bit Edition XP on these laptops yet? I'm wondering if its worth the hassle?

EDIT:
I was (*) this close to buying one today. My dad and I went to Best Buy and I showed it to him-- he was skeptical at first but became impressed. I told the sales guy I wanted to buy one ("THE ONE WITH THE 64-BIT CHIP?!?") and he checked their stock. Out, along with another nearby store, along with the warehouse who could get me one. Totally cleaned out.

So Im on the BB site trying to order, but my dad hasnt activated his BB card yet so I tried but the clearing house is closed!

OK, I put it on AMEX... no financing for dad... I'm just going to transfer the amt from my bank account to his online... the things I have to do..

It says its on backorder, but its saying itll ship in 5-7 days, but its saying it will ship bt 2/23 and 3/03. WTF, when will I get it then>?

As long as you don't block the ventilation holes you're fine. Just put your legs under the sides and you can sit there all day without a problem, but block the ventilation holes and it becomes a fireball. The accessory box that comes with it is actually a perfect lap rest for it.

MatthewF01, I've put the 64 bit XP on mine, and there's no drivers for the wireless LAN or decent video drivers. There's no themes or system restore in XP64 either, it's eerily like Windows 2000 with XP's layout actually. ATI is saying that once the final version of XP64 hits the shelves they'll release a driver.
[idea] Everyone email ATI and ask for an XP64 driver! [/idea]

Here is a little about battery life:

3:03 hours, running windows 2000 SP4, brightness at setting 5 while moving files from one folder to other, typing some docs and reading some PDF documents. 7K60 as hard drive

I'll try to remember to do the hdtach numbers with the 7200 drive this evening, or maybe I'll go home at lunch and do it.

Hitachi 7k60(emachines m6805)

CPU utilization: 24.1%

Ran it on my main desktop machine, just for the heck of it. (P4, 3g, 1g ram, Abit IC7-G)

2 raptors in a stripe:

Random Access Time 9ms
Read Burst Speed 96.8MB/s
Read speed -
maximum 89.8MB/s
minimum 43.4MB/s
average 63.3MB/s

CPU utilization: 3.3%

185gig deskstar:

Random Access Time 12.9ms
Read Burst Speed 90.2MB/s
Read speed-
maximum 59.8MB/s
minimum 26.9MB/s
average 46.3 MB/s

CPU utilization: 3%

Difference between the 7200rpm notebook drive and the desktar is quite a bit more than I would've thought.

Those numbers for the 7K60 are somewhat disappointing--I am expecting a 7K60 in tomorrow via UPS. Still, the gap between your 7K60 numbers and the 5400 rpm drive is quite large when compared to the 5400 vs. 4200 rpm drive...I think it is a worthwhile upgrade.

I run an S-ATA 4-drive 0+1 array on my workstation, so I don't expect miracles on my notebook...but every little bit helps. I'll post my own 7K60 numbers for corroboration once I get everything configured.

I picked up a couple configuration programs from Hitachi's website today. Looks like I can probably tweak the drive for better performance(more noise).

post the goods when you have some results to show as well!

my machine is on backorder from BestBuy... its driving me totally nuts!

update:
RAWK! I went on BB's site and it said still out of stock, but a store in my area had them in again. So I called Cust. Serv. and got them to switch me over to Pick-Up... so that store is supposed to email me tonight to go pick it up! Excited! I cant wait to overclock it! Im going to be in love with the idea of overclocking a laptop... this is my first laptop, anything I should know?

VIA drivers. Make sure you get the 64 bit Hyperion Pro set (or whatever they call them).

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has used or is using their laptop in a wireless environment. I was considering on purchasing a wireless router and I was inclined toward the DLink 624 but I noticed its not using the same wireless chipset as the wireless adapter that is shipped with our notebook (which is broadcom based)

Anyway, if anyone can share which wireless router they're using (if anyone is using one) and average throughput at about .....a 50ft range, I'd really appreciate it.

ClockGen, my good man!

and Cruisin, I just got mine onto the wireless portion of my home LAN, which is based on a Dlink DWL2000AP 802.11g access point, but i cant give you any throughputs at 50ft...

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the great information. Looks like different chipset won't affect compatibility that much after all.

Hey Matthew, how's the signal to one another, relatively strong? even if on another room?? Have you tried copying large files (~200Mb) from your wireless PC to a wired one without losing connection?

Thanks again.

I've downloaded 250MB+ files on mine wirelessly without a problem, but for transferring over the LAN, I just hook up a cable.

I'm connecting to a netgear wireless router as well, no problems once I ran windows update and got the wireless-specific patches.

These machines are shipping with a very out of date version of XP, run windows update first thing after you've got them networked.

Well i just did a test. Downloaded Photoshop on my M6805 and was only getting 150 KB/S, Laptop only 20 feet away from wireless Router. Downloaded same file with my desktop to same Router, RJ45 hookup and getting 600 KB/S. Seems kinda slow on the wireless end of things...... Anyone have any input

Lane42,

It's real hard to measure throughput performance by downloading files from the net because you're just introducing too many variables (could've have been your wireless drivers but it also could have been that their site was swamped at the time or your ISP was temporarily slow). To get a good measurement, I'd suggest copying a ~200Mb file from your wireless to your wired system and vice-versa and compare the timed results. Keeping everything local makes it easier on you to test and compare. If you did want to measure your internet download and upload speeds between your 2 systems, then I'd suggest going to a site that is specifically for that purpose such as http://www.dslreports.com and using their speed tools.

MonkeyDriveExpress,

Do you remember the brand of your wireless router? is it an 11g??
