Ugh :disgust: .....an insult to the actual 9700 line. They should have actually called it 'Mobility 9650' in that case.... or perhaps 'Moblity 9600XT'!

Ah well, it's good enough I guess.

You haven't tried overclocking your video Mem yet, have you? Surely, you can do better than default, can't you??

I think it's the drivers. I have seen people overclock to the 400s/230+.
My first try was with 350/230 -> didn't get past the "max payne" game in 3dmark2001se. Then 330/230 -> same.
Then 350/200 -> same. Finally, 330/200. Worked.

I don't understand why it wont go further. After this, I overclocked the CPU; going to 1853 resulted in crashing ut2004 demo.
Do you think it's the drivers? Maybe the newest omegas haven't been tested with overclocking.

errr...try this. Go into the ATI Control panel in driver settings... DISABLE PowerPlay. That modifies the GPU/MEM clock frequencies based on the power the system is receiving (AC/batt)... when I first overclocked I ran into issues with that. And once I launched UT2K4 demo on batteries and it locked the system, not good.

So what I did was use ATiTools and check what speed Powerplay clocks the speeds down to in low-power environments (turns out to be 104/104), then added it as a profile in ATITools, so when Im not using massive GPU power I kick in the PowerPlay Low-Clocked profile... other profiles I did were 'Stock', 'Power Boost' and 'Top Speed' (430/230)...

Try that perhaps? Maybe youll have better luck then.

Intel graphics, only a 400MHz FSB chip, no HyperThreading, I'll pass. Nice find though.

What is the deal with the M6805? Has it been pulled from production or something?
Emachines suddenly says it is available nowhere (retail or online) and Circuit City has it off their website???

What are you talking about? The website says the M6805 is in stock in like 8 stores near my area. Do you mean the M6807 or something?

I did run it on battery before (yep, it locked up.), but when I was overclocking, it was on AC power (including when i played the demo and ran 3dmark). I'll try the powerplay thing anyway, though.

What I am talking about is:
1.) If I go to circuitcity.com and search for "M6805", nothing is found, if I search for "emachines" I get monitors and desktops, NO notebooks at all. Just tried it again, same thing.
2.) At emachines.com, I am finding nothing for the M6807. I am now finding Best Buy stores for the M6805. Wasn't it Circuit City last week?

Andrew:

A few weeks ago, when I bought my 6805, the online site for CC had the 6807 and BB had the 6805. Then, CC listed the 6807 but it was out forever. A few would come in, I guess, and it would be available for a few hours (and I would get an email notice to that effect), then it would be gone again. Then, it AND the 6805 appeared on the CC site for a few days. Then the 6807 disappeared off the CC site entirely, and the link from Emachines showed nada, as it does now. The Emachines link then showed the 6805 at both stores (with CC being significantly cheaper). Then, the CC site showed no emachines notebooks whatsoever. That is the situation today. BB showed the 6805 available the whole time. I bought mine at BB in NYC.

I DID, however, see the 6805 on display at a CC in Georgia. For a while, at least, they had the 6805 in stock at some stores even though they didn't show it online. The NYC CC store clerk told me that they had never had it in stock.

SO, to review. BB had the 05, CC had the 07. Then CC had the 05 and 07. Now, it has nothing.

Hope this helps.

All the best,

Bill

Well, the main problem is that they are sellling all of what they get faster than they can get them. there are still some 6805's running around the country, problem is to get someone to find out where they are. At the worst, get the demo on the floor, they will usually knock off some bux and maybe even throw in the extended warranty, each store manager has some flexibility as to what they will and will not do.

As to the 9700, all the reviews I've seen describe it as pretty much the top line 9600 with the 'k' process...whooopee.... The general concensus is that it is faster simply because its clocked a lot higher, i.e. around 450mghz core which I can beat with my 9600 so I'm not missing the 9700. As for the 128megs, I'll be interested in seeing how much difference that makes. At the moment , I don't seem to need it as I'm getting pretty phenomenal graphic performance for a laptop, 3dmark2001se for me is running right under 12k.

The faster chip I don't know if that is worth it either. Mine o'clocks solidly at just under 2100mghz which is what 100 OVER what the new chip is set for? Since speed equals heat equals shortened component life and more fan noise, I'm pretty comfortable with the 6805 as with clockgen and atitools, I can set a number of different performance points for what I'm doing. When I'm writing, for instance or for just general purpose computing, I find I can lower the cpu all the way down to 800 and the ati card down to 140 or so, and my fan almost never even comes on...nice and quiet..but for those times when i want to frag big time, punch up the clocks and let the pixel splatting begin

I AM curious about whether ddr 400 will work on this box, the VIA chipset supports it, has anyone pulled BOTH 333 chips and tried a couple of 400's to see if the bios will recognize it?

Lastly, for those who went out and upgraded to the 7200 Hitachi HD, check TheRegister, IBM has put out a MANDATORY patch for all of its models using that drive......something is amiss...

In sum, for the money, the 6805/07 is 'nuts' value, one of computing's CLEAR 'no brainers'. and for those questioning emachines build quality...please note that Voodoo's top line model is the same arima box, with speedier components....and that sucker will set you back 3200 - 3700 US $.... 3 times what I paid for my '05......can I get a 'DOH!" ? heheheh

seer

PS. I'm looking at the 50 gig 16meg cache 7200 Toshiba drive that just hit the market...I suspect it may be faster and quieter than the Hitachi but can't find anyone that has installed one yet...

Oh, forgot to mention one thing, a very good test of o'clock stability for my box has been the Nvidia 'dawn' dancing fairy....If you can get that thing to run reliably, you are assured your o'clock is dead stable. It particularly taxes the ati vid chip mem so be prepared to walk that down abit from what atitools tells you is your max o'clock.

seeratlas,

When you overclock your processor to 2100 AND your video to 450 at the same time, are you able to run 3dMarks2001SE reliably??

As for trying out DDR400, I've read some forums where a few people have attempted to install DDR400 on their 05/07s. Thus far, I haven't heard one success story though. Might be a BIOS or hardware limitation. At the rate Emachine cranks out updates, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Seratlas, stay away from Toshiba hard drives..... unreliable and slower. A year ago, their top of the line (-GAX) with 16 Mb cache and 5400 rpm was unable to beat the 40GNX.... 5400 rpm and 8 MB cache. I don't think they have changed that situation, as the 7K60 is vastly improved over the 40GX. For proof, the 5K80 beats the 40GNX quite handily.... Seagate, that is another story, as the momentus gave a fierce fight to the 5K80/7K60 according to xbitlabs.

Cruisin, I can't quite get it error free at 2100 (my best is 2083), tho I have gotten the ATI to rock and roll at 472/221. I havn't run 3dmark2001se at max as I find the Dawn thing will crash the system sooner so even tho 3dmark will run at higher than the Dawn, for me the extra frames aren't worth the potential crash. My "Max " game settings at the moment are 2010, and 462/223 on the vid. This is solid as a rock tho the fan runs constantly, so I see that as ok for serious online gameplay, but I don't leave the puter at those settings constantly

Thanks for the headsup on the Toshi drives Alex. Has Seagate got a 7200 laptop drive yet? I thought the momentus was a 5400 drive ? but very fast nonetheless.

Nightcrawler,

You can use the Omega driver, they install with the 9600 mobile, and they have a version just recently posted based upon the latest ATI 4.3 drivers. I have them installed on my emachines 6805 and run with no problems and they install with no problems.
