I got the 1 gig mem stick mentioned above and was all excited to get it installed in my 6809. I stuck it in, replaced the battery and powered it up. All it did was beep 4 or 5 times and then sit there. Don't know what that POST code is trying to tell me. Stuck the original memory back in and it booted back up.

As there is not much in the bios to play with, does anybody have any idea what that POST code means? Or do you think it's just a bad stick of memory and I need to get a replacement?

I live in Florida near the east coast and fled to Orlando to hide out from hurricane Frances, sure was nice to have my trusty laptop in the hotel room to track her. Was even better to get back home and find my house still here.

TIA for any thoughts on this mem issue,

BobL.

Congrats on surviving Frances intact, my sister lives out there too.

Not sure about the RAM problem, should work unless it is the wrong type of RAM. Hard to install it incorrectly but did you try a couple times? I would refer to the mobo manufacturers website for POST codes. Heck if you can't even boot to get MEMTest running you may as well exchange out the stick IMO.

I agree that it's probably a bad ram. Had the same thing happen to me on my old HP laptop. Bought a generic ram module, and the thing just beeped. Sent it back, and bought another from Crucial which worked.

I probably shouldn't say the ram is bad. It may work on a different machine. It's probably just not compatable with yours.

I bought a 512 MB stick from Crucial for my 6809 which works fine.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm gonna call and see about getting it replaced. As far as it being compatable, it is the one from Outpost others in this forum have used so I don't think that's the problem.

Thanks again,
BobL.

Overclocking CPU and Video card?

I just installed Doom3 and want to get it playing better.

Do you overclock the CPU first and then run the ATi CPU and memory tests to find the max they can run at? I ran the CPU test over night and it was still running this AM when I check it. Does it ever finish running?

note: have the 6805 machine, with stock everything (4200 HD, 512 memory)

Yes, I flashed to the M6811 BIOS on my M6805 and it resolved my SP2 issues. Just make sure you flash while plugged in or with plenty of battery power left. Assuredly voided the warranty, but eMachines does not support SP2 or condone its installation.

I'll be curious to see how eMachines gets out of honoring their warranty by "not supporting" XP SP2 when Microsoft starts pushing the changes individually through Windows Update and our machines stop working properly.

It is a shame that eMachines' support is so terrible. The hardware is excellent, but the fact that they've not released a single BIOS update or driver through their website is awful - and the fact that they don't even list the M6807 on their support page at ALL is shameful.

I've said it once, I'll say it again. upgrade to the catalyst 4.8 drivers. They gave me a huge performance boost on my 6805. Also, get more ram. I upgraded my lappie to 1.25gigs and it runs much smoother. Also, do the cache and texture size tweaks. I can run Doom 3 at 800x600 with 4x AA, high settings and shadows off and it runs perfectly smooth.

I have a 802.11b linksys router for my home network and my laptop(m6805) connects fine. yes 802.11g is backward compatible.

Its OK to run without SP2 since you can get the security and critical updates without SP2 by doing the Custom Install.

On another note, I'm getting close to the :edit: 3:45hour mark on battery life. I have the PowerNow stuff installed, the video downclocked to 97/97, and the system memory downclocked to 100mhz. Downclocking the system memory instantly showed up in the battery meter as a ~30 minute gain and for general tasks there's no performance difference.

The more I fool with this thing, the more I like it.

how do you underclock the system memory

Wow, flashing the BIOS was some scary sh*t. I used the 6811 bios, and everything worked out as planned, BUT .... now, once entering hybernation at 1.8, then unplugging and starting back up, I re-enter at 793. What have been your results?

The fan above the airbrushed circle (left) sucks air off of the CPU heatsink.
