OK, so don't tell me how to determine the manufactured date, but my boards that just arrived from mwave with the round heat sink say Rev: 1.0 at the bottom of the board.

Nice review of Corsair XMS 3500 being tested in an 8K5A2+...
To be fair though, when testing the memory with the suggested memory timings I was able to hit 225 MHz FSB with a voltage of 2.8V. When I turned down the memory timings to most conservative, the Corsair XMS3500 would do an amazing 235 MHz FSB! However performance at those settings was lower than at 217 MHz with the most aggressive memory timings so higher MHz do not necessarily mean a performance gain.
Integer ALU - 256MB Corsair XMS3500 (217/434 MHz) 3067 MB/s Float FPU 2769 MB/s

If you are not going to overclock it makes no difference what stepping you get on the chip you order (Athlon XP 1600+). The stepping is only used as an indication for how good the potential is for overclocking.

So if you get an ARGNA and you don't plan or running it at 166mhz fsb w/o unlocking then don't worry about it.

On the underbelly of the last pci slot is your serial number. Go to Epox.com -> support -> warranty and enter in your serial number and it tells you when your warranty expires.

The serial number is also on the cardboard box the motherboard came in. It is my speculation that boards after 9/1/02 are being manufacturered with the square heatsink.

do the XPs have to be unlocked to OC? I have a Duron that came unlocked so I never had to do that whole bridging thing. I just changed the multiplier in BIOS and went from 650 to 950. I would hate to have to unlock an XP if it is the same as the Duron. Those lines are so tiny!

Thanks

not true. my warranty expires 9/5/04 and the board has a round northbridge heatsink. this is based upon the premise that boards only manufactured after 9/1 carry the 2 year warranty. premise may not be true.

The board I got from mWave is dated 9-5-2002 and has the round H/S.
My theory is that there are no theories.

What is the best bios for the 8k5a2+? I'm using the original 7/23. I tried 8/15, but noticed no difference. How is the beta 9/05 bios?

I guess my theory about the square heatsinks was wrong...I'm fairly sure though that the square heatsink motherboards are new, so chances are if you've got one of those, your board is from september or later.

On Epox's website, it says that all boards made after 9/01/02 have two year warranty.

Roger that bupkus & kf. Thanks. After agonizing on what's the right thing to order in wee hours of Friday a.m. I chose Googlegear's Corsair 512MB CAS2. How can you go wrong with $0.50 FedEx 2 day shipping??-- Heatsink ,(Evercool CUD-725 all copper $22 shipped from Nexfan.com) won't be here till Wed. Can't wait. Anybody know a decent, CHEAP, temp. substitute from local vender (Fry's, Compusa, BB) . Thanks guys for the tons of info and helping out the newbie O/Cr's like me. Nice job on your O/c's & case temps.

my question is about the Epox 8k5a3+ motherboard.

My config is now like this:
Athlon XP 2200+
2x 512 Infineon DDR pc2700
pioneer dvd player
plexwriter cd writer
Pci firewire card
Asus v8460 graphics card
1 x maxtor 30 gb
1 x maxtor 80 gb
and ofcourse, the epox 8k5a3+ motherboard.

What i would like to know is how to setup this system from scratch.

I have installed windows 2000 having only HD 1 in ide1 and cdrom in ide2.
Windows is now installed, and i plug everything into its place :
- cd writer in ide 1
- dvd in ide 2
- Maxtor 30 gb in ide 3
- maxtor 80 gb in ide 4

All drives are in MASTER

Is this a good IDE setup ??

Anyway... when i boot the system, the highpoint shows nothing.
I tried looking into the bios, maybe i had to enable this.....but couldn't find anything.

How can i make the 'highpoint' to detect my stuff ???

Because in windows 2000 it doesn't detect any scsi & raid controllers also....

Maybe someone knows a good step-by-step setup tutorial....

Thanks in advance !!!!!!!!

Hey guys just thought id join the crowd. Looks like a great forum to post on. This thread definitely soldified me buying the 8k5a3+. But now time for the questions. This was my first build and i was very pleased with how easy it was to do. I cant seem to get the Fast, Fastest, or Turbo memory timings to work for some odd reason. Here are my system specs and pertinent information:

Epox 8k5a3+ (obviously)
AthlonXP Agoia 1800+
Arctic Silver III
Corsair 512mb DDR PC2700 XMS
Thermalright AX-7 with Panaflo 80mm Fan
Antec True 430W PSU
WinXP Service Pack 1

VDimm is 2.57v
VCore is 1.78v

I tried increasing the VDimm by 0.2v with it on Fastest and Turbo and still it locked up right after booting to login screen. Any ideas?

Question #2

Sandra is showing my Chipset as a KT266/A Chipset. I hope this is the same as KT333. Anyone else ever get this???

Im currently running at 46.5C for CPU and 31C for system. I plan on OC'ing this soon to see what i can squeeze out of it. Any tips are appreciated. Thanks. Great thread.

Chappo,

What you have is the JABOD raid configuration, or the recording ability formerly known as, Just A Bunch Of Drives.
As there is no specific raid setup, you may or may not see anything when you press "Ctrl H" at the specific time during the boot process when there is the ability to access the H/P controller. I don't know for sure as I don't have the 5a3+.
However, I do know that there are several files to install under W2K in order to access the H/P controller. I suspect that you may /not have installed these from the CD that came with your 8k5a3+.

I need some info on pin settings on the 8K5A2+.

(1) FANS - There are 3 fan plugs, FAN1, CPU FAN is clear, FAN2, CHASSIS FAN is I suppose for a case fan, and FAN3, POWER FAN. I have an Antec True Power PS which has a 3 pin plug for plugging into the mobo for the purpose of monitoring the speed of the inner of the PS's 2 fans. This I assume is to be plugged into FAN3 POWER FAN. However, page 3-8 shows the pin voltages for the 3 fans and FAN1 shows {GND, +12V, Rotation}, as does FAN2, but FAN3 shows {GND, +12V, NC}!? I think when Epox says "POWER FAN" they mean it's an unmonitored plug and simply pure power only. [Y,N]?

(2) JCK1, on page 3-5 of the Manual shows the CPU HOST CLOCK SELECT in Default position closing pins 1-2: 100MHz. I'm going to use this setting when I first boot the mainboard, but do I need to position to 2-3: 133MHz when I want to eventually set the fsb=166? [Y,N]?

(3) IDE3/4 on page 3-9. Can I use one of these to connect a 3rd IDE device, (hdd or CDROM) if I have an extra cable and if I want only one device on each cable? [Y,N]?

if its a 100FSB proc..run 100..if its 133(aka 266..) ..well guess you know now

most likely non-monitored if that's( and it does show it in the manual as such..) what the manual says but until you put a fan that has the signal feature on it and it noshows in a prog like the USDM..you won't know..neither will I ..if I don't finish assembling the mobo..

I don't wish to answer that yet..still assembling..
should be able to tho..will not hurt anything..unless you trying to do an OS fresh from there..not recommended

Just finished reading the entire thread.....great thread! I haven't been this excited about o'cing since I had the celery 300A w/ abit bh6 up to 450....Nice to see that it can be done with the XP w/o connecting bridges. Sounds like a very reasonable investment....hmmmmm..... Good work to insane....

Thanks Scrap for the fan tip. I will have to definitely look into that. If thats the case ill move the Panaflo into the front of the my case as a HDD Cooler. I hope Insane can help me out with these RAM timings. Its frustrating to say the least to not use them.

Look at AlphaWolf829's setup in this thread:

He has the VDimm at 2.9! I suspect that this is necessary to get the aggressive timings to work.

I have the same Corsair module. I was not able to boot up with 2-2-5-2-1T. Haven't had the courage to up the VDimm. Dont know what the risks are apart from voiding the warranty over 2.8. Perhaps one of the knowlegeable ones on this forum can help. If you do have the guts to up your VDimm, I'd be very interested to know the results. Also note that AlphaWolf829 has the command rate set to 2T rather than the speced value of 1T. Dont know if this makes a difference.

Insane, please shed some light!

Question #2

Sandra is showing my Chipset as a KT266/A Chipset. I hope this is the same as KT333. Anyone else ever get this???

I have the same situation with Sandra with my 2+ board. Sandra is not reading it right or whatever they are reading is not translated right. WCPUID shows it as: "Via Apollo KT266/A,KT333". So it seems to be a problem with Sandra.

Ok, just finished putting the finishing touches on my new setup!!!!1
I'm using a xp1600 and am ready to start my o/c. (yup, read the whole thread)
my three questions are this: 1 - I couldn't find the divider for agp/pci, is it set automatically?

2 - should I change my bios for 9.05 before I get started?

3 - which multipier do I know to use if I set my fsb to 166 and beyond?

Thanks for any help on this.

Ill see what i can do. I have a friend who has a similar setup and was able to get to the Turbo setting at a VDimm of about 2.8. I tried the same with no luck. The odd thing to me was that not even the Fast mode would work and that doesnt change the timings at all. Odd.
