Italy just coughed up their chance. They're a counter-attacking team that relies on long ball play and tight defense. After they scored the first goal the strikers were far too high and the midfielders didn't play deep enough and Spain punished them.

Common soccer/football knowledge: You're most likely to concede a goal shortly after scoring a goal.

Great game, the main reason we only saw 2 goals was that Buffon and Casillas are among the world top goalkeepers.
Italy hasn't been playing with defense-first mindset after 2010 WC fiasco, they were quite equal to Spain until maybe last 20-30 mins. And Spain with no attackers in a practically 4-6-0 formation, wtf, talk about being cautious...

The big surprise so far is definitely Denmark beating Holland... I thought for sure Denmark would end up being last in that group, go figure

Not surprised at Portugal losing, they have been playing terribly lately, theres no way they will get past the group phase now, oh well

Russia is probably the biggest sensation though... I mean, they actually won 3-0 vs Italy in one of the friendly matches last week, and now they win 4-1 again... Wow

pretty much. England parked the bus and looked bright and inventive in spurts. France had the possesion and flair, but England was solid and held firm. Lescott's header was fantastic and Nasri beat Hart well, but Hart may have been shielded slowing his reaction to the shot.

A decent match until the last 5 minutes, but nearly as exciting and open as the Ukraie - Sweden game. Kudos for Shevchenko's brace for the winning team. I'd put money on Elmander slashing his wrists in the locker room...

I re-watched the RUSOL game on Espn3 last night.

Anyone else get the shivers listening to the Russian anthem as the fans unfurled that massive banner?

That banner was extremely disrespectful.

Sorry but not in Poland's capital and the history of Russia murdering/controlling our country for so many years.

Anyways, drama aside. Poland did very well outside of that horrible defense on the set piece/goal.

I'm proud of them. Just hope they can hand it to Chechs saturday.

Russia looked just like Poland in the 2nd half of Greece game. Tired/sleepy....just terrible.

Wow, Ronaldo misses an easy goal, the ball comes back down the other end and the Danes tie it on a brilliant header! Amazing.

Edit: and now Varela scores the probable match winner. Portugal does deserve to win, but poor Danes
