'This year it is estimated that 28.8 billion viewers will watch the World Cup games.' Ok, so they're obviously counting viewers multiple times over multiple games. If we do that we'd might as well include viewers for the 256 regular season games for the NFL as well as the 10 playoff games. That's gotta be like 500 billion viewers!

err, adding the playoff games make sense, adding the regular season ones don't.

http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=574061 <----Better link than the one you're reading but...

Why don't you actually read what was posted in the link instead of taking one obviously overexaggerated sentence from it completely out of context (and yes, FIFA is known for being absolutely ridiculous with some of their numbers).

Here's something that may help satisfy you:

http://www.independent.co.uk/s...rter-right-438302.html

So how many people actually watch the World Cup final live, from start to finish? According to Initiative Sports Futures, independent analysts with no ties to Fifa, the figure for the 2006 final was 260 million in the 54 key markets it surveyed, accounting for 90 per cent of the world's TV households. ISF sources figures only from markets where data is collated electronically by reputable monitors, such as Barb in the UK.

I'm much more of a fan of American football than International football, but I'm not going to let that blind me to the fact that the Euro tournament and World Cup are much, much larger global events than the SuperBowl.

Interesting call on the first goal in the Dutch/Italian game. I agree it should probably be a goal, although I can't seem to find any rules specifying that exact situation.

The one by van Nistelrooy? He was obviously offsides.

But there was another Italian defender behind the goal line. Now, if the defender was staying off on purpose, then he gets a foul and the goal stands, if he's pushed off by an attacker, then the goal is off, but getting pushed out by the goalie when he was on his way out already... a bit of a grey area...

law 11.11 in the rulebook - under advice to referees. "A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position," he says. "Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his or her off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position."

Found this somewhere.

Those numbers don't seem correct. Or possibly the number is for tv sets and not people, because I can guarantee that more than 2% of the world watched the Euro 2004 final. Further, the opening ceremonies for the Olympics this year are scheduled to hit more than 1Billion live viewers. Also, Super Bowl viewer ship is 95 million in the US alone. Unless no one else in the world tunes in, then that number is also incorrect.

the defender ran into his own golie and fell down, he was NOT waived off by the ref and therefore was still an elegible player

Yep I've done a lot of reading on this lately. It's a good goal. Panucci is considered to be in play and on the field at the point on the goal line nearest to his position at the time. If he was injured, had play stopped and the ref given him permission to leave the field for treatment, he'd not be considered in. However he'd then have to ask the referee's permission to be waved back in to play.

Spain's strikers look/are deadly (Torres and David Villa). The defense was a little shakey at the start, but have picked it up some. 2-0 Spain 62:00 in.
