Open.

Never played it, contimplating on buying it, and would be greatful to hear what others think of the game. Not really smiling with paying 15/month to play a game online. Seems high for a game that is already 50 bucks. But we'll keep this thread for the game, and what people think of it. I'll wait for a demo so I can see if I actually can justify buying/paying per month....

Well when I bought eq1, that's all I played for about 3 years, so it does save you some money on buying other games.

The reviews I have seem are pretty grim.

Many loading areas even within a single town taking 20 seconds or so each to load. Zones only hold 300 people but lag is still reportedly an issue. Quests are go kill x number of y or bring x to y.

I was looking forward to this game but now im not sure ill even try it.

I wont be joining in on Evercamp 2 .... BUT

$15 a month = Countless hours of entertainment.
$50 for most games = 10 hours, Maybe a few more, maybe many less.

Some people look for something a little deeper than running around shooting people

I like both. I've put in a couple hours in EQ2. It looks great is the only definite thing I can say about it now. It's wierd, as everything is so different, yet the same. I just hit level 6 and left the training island. Had their first server crash tonight, lasted about a half hour or so. Not bad at all.

But, only time will tell....Although having a WoW beta account, I think EQ2 is/will be more suited to my interests.

I'd urge anyone considering mmorpgs to stay far, far away from Sony (EQ, EQ2, Planetside, Star Wars: Galaxies). Their utter lack of ethics and respect for their customers trickles down into the very content and implementation of their games.

Been playing for a few days. What strikes me as odd is the players seem somewhat antisocial. Not much chatting and grouping going on....at least compared to what I've seen in WoW and past mmorpgs. Could be cause I am still level 7, but I sometimes don't even feel like the game is online. I'm sure it'll change soon.

Weakling!

On a more serious note, I'm not much into MMORPG's, but I think I'm gonna try WoW out, if only because I'm a big WarCraft fan.

Isn't sony just the distributor and customer support company? There is certainly a big difference between galaxies and everquest in terms of the quality of product. Don't know about EQ2, though.

Their online entertainment division, SOE (Sony Online Entertainment), creates the games. I've found they have the same problems Sony has, namely no ethics or ability to create a quality product.

Umm, in WoW its even worse. It seems every quest in the game is to kill something or talk to someone. Lag was an issue in beta yes, not in retail. Don't believe me? Go check what people playing retail are saying.

Yea, zones can take some time to load (10-20 seconds depending on computer) but they are pretty big. Its not like your zoning all the time.

Even tho ive been playing eq1 since opening day march 16th '99, i really dont think ill even give eq2 a try. I have no desire to be the "test" guinea pig all over again. For veteran players i dont think there will be that "wow" factor anymore. Its all been done, the mystery is no more. We've seen it all, been there, done that. Eq2 is cool, maybe for the few that never played eq1 before, but otherwise eq2 will get old really fast for us old school players. Nice eye-candy, need to upgrade videocard (again) to benefit from the best effects ingame.

But just on a pure personal level, I will never have that feeling of fear sitting at the cross roads in butcherblock huddled by the guards for fear, shaking in my boots, of what lay beyond, unexplored. Those were the true awesome days of eq, i doubt the pure mystery will ever come alive again.

I've probably got a dozen hours of playtime in. The zone loading is simply not an issue. Most of your playtime is gonna be spent in a zone or two fighting the bad guys. Last nite I was with a party in the commonlands for 3 hours.....no loading....at all. When you cross zones, yes. But this is nothing like the loading that occurred in EQ 1. I've subscribed to a number of EQ discussion boards. I've seen it brought up zero times.

Lag? Again, not an issue. In the cities framerate will drop but you've got so many graphic options that you can tune your system to get a comfortable frame rate. I don't feel the need to. Most important, when you're fighting mobs, the lag is happily not there. I was part of a group of five or six last nite, fighting up to three mobs at a time and I saw very little lag.

I like both EQ 2 and WoW....but they are very different games. Note that those arguing that EQ is flawed because of lag or zoning lag are in the distinct minority. If you have dialup or a slow machine, I can definitely see you have some problems though.

Well, I've had it install now for a few days and have had the opportunity to play it. The game looks outstanding, and you really need a 6800 series card to run it smoothly with details turned up. Nvidia's been partnered with this for a long while.

I haven't experienced any serious lag myself, even in the Willow Wood village with 100 PCs standing around. Also, the zones can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 30 seconds to zone, depending on how big the zone your loading is. Tiny zones, like the workskop quest zone on Refuge actually loaded in the blink of an eye. You tend to spend a bit of time in zones that take longer ot load because they are bigger obviously.

I like how I always know what to do and a general idea of where it needs to be done. In WoW, I was almost totally lost. The minimap blows and you have no waypoints to guide you around. In EQ2 that is not that case. Every building has an ID on it, and if an NPC tells you to go to a building, the glowing path guides you to it.

The two villages that I've been to in EQ2 thus far both seemed alive, unlike the cities in WoW. The NPCs move around and almost all of them have unique voices. Most of them will give quests as well.

One last thing, the fights are MUCH more interesting and better done in EQ2 than WoW. In WoW, my hunter would simply draw her bow and fire the arrow for a standard autoshot and simply stab with here stilletto repeatedly. In EQ2, the club, the staff, the longsword, and the short sword that I've used so far have each has unique battle choreography. The staff particularly is cool to watch, the way the twirl it around and hold the staff during the fight looks very cool.

All in all, I like EQ2 so far. I am about half way through the citizenship quest to gain access to the city of Qeynos. I do wish I had more coin to buy stuff for my house though, oh well.

Do you like tons of long loading screens, awful performance, bland graphics, boring races/quests, a company that mistreats its customers, and loads of bugs?

If so, EQ2 is for you! If not, try World of Warcraft.

If you have a crappy, unoptimised computer, you get long loading screens and aweful performance. I play just fine at 1024x768 on my laptop with an FX5200. If my laptop w/ crappy video and a 4200rpm hard drive can play it, so can your computer...

Bland Graphics? Maybe if you're running it on an FX5200 like my laptop. But my main computer has an X800 Pro in it...and boy, is the game total eye candy. WoW has bright colors, but that's because it's like watching a cartoon. It doesn't take much processing power to make something that looks like a cartoon like decent. EQII, at 1600x1200 w/ most of the options on, will make your JAW DROP! Pictures do not do it justice...

Boring races? Not really when you compare it to WoW, IMO. What about the lack of classes to choose from in Wow? There's many more options in EQ. I Beta'd WoW and EQII and I have to say that WoW bored me to tears. Every corner I turned in EQII I was finding something new and finding another peice of an extremely large story/history that was unfolding around me. Everything in EQII just seems like it's on such a large scale...it's almost overwhelming. WoW just seemed like a hack and slash tredmill.

Company that mistreats its customers, you've got me there. SOE/Verant is a crappy company but, when you play the game you can tell that they tried their best to make a quality product. Blizzard is a great company, but their quality is starting to slip. The last really good game they put out was Diablo II. The Warcraft series has always been half assed to me.

Really though, it all comes down to what you like. EQII appeals to me because of the combination of realism and familiar fanatasy aspects. WoW appeals to others who're looking for a more lighthearted MMO.

My only gripe about EQII: Only 4 characters per account. That's crap, especially when they raised the price to $14.95 a month...

Loading zones only takes about 7 seconds. This is on a 2.8 with 1 gig dual channel ram with a 7200rpm 2mb cache hard drive.

Loading screens at all are a said thing. The technology to eliminate loading mid game has been around for like 6 years SOE has no excuss for having them. Even if it's just a couple of seconds it's still very annoying.
