<< Three movies, one per book. One movie each in the years 2001, 2002, and 2003. >>

Maybe I am wrong but I read somewhere that the movies were supposed to release in 6 month intervals. Dec 2001, June 2002, Dec 2002. Doesn't make sense to release them a year apart since the filming for all 3 is already done. Saw the long trailer at the theater this weekend. Looks awesome on the big screen. We saw it when we took our boys to see Harry Potter. The boys liked Harry potter but they are really amped up for LOTR. They are 9 and 12 and have both read LOTR already. They are such good boys
>>

That was the original idea, but they changed it. Now there'll be a movie every xmas. The VHS/DVD that comes out six months later will serve as a hype machine...

And you SHOULD be proud of your boys! Now give them each a copy of the "Silmarillion"!

LOTR rated PG in the UK

WTF is this?!? I thought PJ was making a darker film with plenty of gore, etc. How bad can it really be, though, if it's labelled "not suitable for children under 8"?? Well, maybe the BBFC is just really lenient (any Brits out there?) but this news seems really disappointing.

On the plus side, the running time is up to 2:58.

Nope, its one every year. That gives it plenty of time to spread and release merchandise, etc, etc. And yes, while the movies are done for the most part, they still haven't completely finished the CGI characters as of yet. This gives them extra time to work on them and make them incredibly real

well, it says it features "battle violence and fantasy horror", so I guess that's why it got PG. if it was real horror, it probably would have gotten a PG13 or something....

I just might set my alarm one of these days and get in at 12:01 AT time to count the timer down.

After scanning the list Of UK: PG movies on IMDB I feel a little better. Mostly children's movies or older classics but there are a few violent and/or suspenseful films that managed a PG, so hopefully LOTR just happens to be one of those.

Do you think the next ones will be rated a little higher? The story goes into a darker setting throughout the second and third books, and there are some particularily gory scenes (which i will not spoil for those who haven't read it yet) that would be too gruesome for PG

I guess I am one of the few poeple in the world that has not read the books. I saw the cartoon when I was little and it kinda turned me off from the whole thing. I saw the trailor for the film and thought it looked cool so I wanted to read this book before I saw the movie. I know the books are a trilogy but the Hobbit is said to be a prequel so I bought it today and will read it first. Should I have read the original trilogy first and then the Hobbit or will it be best this way?

everyone needs to go and take all their friends to go, the opening weekend record or whatever that was just set by harry potter needs to be blown out of the water.

loudog: read the hobbit first by all means. Not only will it give you plenty of background information on the happenings in LOTR, it is an extremely good book as well and you will no doubt enjoy reading it.

Damn, guess i can't read some of this.. some spoliers

Just started the book a couple days ago and am about 30% through the first. I was going to give up on it before I bought the books, but then I found out it was only the first book. I can manage that in a month

I had seen the trailers online, but man, I just saw it in the theater a couple days ago.. and WOW.. This is going to be a nice one.

Well, since it comes out on a wednesday, I don't know how the sales will play out.. Maybe they'll count it as one weekend, maybe not.

At any rate, I don't see why it wouldn't do 100M wed-sun.

kami -
What can you tell us about the soundtrack?
Details? Impressions?

I may have to pick one up myself.

Also, is anyone going to hit the charity screening in NY?

It's hard to believe that it is almost Dec 19th - I remember talking about this film way way back when I first heard about it being rumored in college.

Impressions? Well overall its sweetass...

but seriously...

here's a more qualified opinion

I totally agree with the reviewer...the score is very dark, except for the track "Concerning Hobbits" which fits in perfectly with the innocence of The Shire. This dude also thinks it's gonna be up for academy awards.

Oh and the vocals (I don't mean singing...think choir stuff) in the songs are actually in Quenya (Elvish) and Sindarin...there's english translations in the little booklet.

Last night a buddy and me were listening to the soundtrack while playing LOTR on SNES

Updated the conter!

And son, let me tell you truth right now. Episode II is nothing more than a mere filler between the first and second movies!
