Can't say I've played much in a while, been occupied with some other games and was getting a little burnt out but 2.4 trailer released.

Damn, Ninja spell/ability effects look pretty sweet. I'd love to see it mimic the elemental wheel from XI in some way (or maybe even have a slight Magicka twist in some way).

Some of the new armor looks great (crafted I think - says "new recipes"). Especially that blue and white number on the left side of the second set that I would guess is healer.

Wolf in Snowcloak looks like Fenrir?

Have to say I am interested to see where the story is going as well.

Yup, fenrir is the boss in snowcloak. Disappointed to be honest, I sort of wanted him as a summon. Little wolf egi.

The expansion trailer doesn't really show much of anything, but it was pretty at least. I had some friends go to FanFest, sounds like they had a pretty good time, I can't say it's really that interesting to me BUT I would love some of the live music which they really raved about. I've heard some live recordings from The Star Onions and previous Vanafests and they are pretty outstanding.

And yeah, Fenrir would be a nice summon - one that walked instead of floated lol. Unfortunately (and this also tempers my expectations for really how different/interesting Ninja and [the now confirmed] Dark Knight can be) I feel like the much more standardized design for classes in XIV really kind of limits how much of what made those (and other jobs) so cool in XI can translate. I think there will be traces of it, but few true distinctions.

Regardless, looking forward to seeing them and trying them out. I think I'm going to try to tie up some loose ends (Animus finally? lol) prior to 2.4 and definitely check it out.

I started melding my animus weapon over the weekend. I don't play my paladin much anymore (warrior main for coil and such) but I'm not too sure what to put on my animus. I went with acc, parry and det (probably a terrible idea) for now and I'm on tier 3 materias for all of them. Not sure I want to spend too much money on it... and with atma rates going up I'm thinking of getting an atma weapon for ninja.

For now I'm going to get a small house when 2.4 releases. Hopefully it won't get sold out in 5 minutes like last time since there's a few hundred new houses.

nope, just that it's confirmed. Based on how FF11 job progression was I'm assuming it'll be another melee dps, and samurai might be tank.

Well we get Rogue > Ninja with 2.4 and Dark Knight was announced during FanFest, but I think that's all for now.

I'm more curious what sort of Healer we get with the expansion. Some sort of armored paladin-like (or maybe Mercenary-ish from SWTOR) class would be aesthetically cool, but I'm not sure what ability/style you could give them to distinguish them from WHM/SCH. HoTs are a little under-represented I think, AoE that isn't centered on the healer (like a 'burning arrow' heal), maybe some buffs or auras.

rogue. dual wielder. As far as we know nothing about sneak/trick attacks, but it looks more like wow's rogue playstyle with vanish + backstabs.

not too sure what else you can do with heals. You got whm with big heals and AOE healing and SCH with preventive healing + pet healing. I'd like a support+debuff healer (red mage pls) that focuses on debuffing or buffing the group (AOE phalanx/pld aura from wow)

Wow, didn't realize this thread was still kept up. Anyways, I still play 10-16 hours a week. I'm very much looking forward to 2.4. Will be working on the final coil and ninja asap.

I was overseas when the personal housing hit so I was stuck with medium or large homes. However, the medium and large are too big imo for a personal home. My FC only has 2 fully furnished floors and hit the furniture limit, stupid.

Helps to be in a fun FC to do stuff together or else I would've quit long ago, honestly.

that goes for all mmorpgs, you can only solo for so long when the content's designed for groups.

I'm going to be camping out infront of limsa before patch hits and then grabbing a plot hopefully when server comes up. hyperion was sold out in minutes last time and I'm not confident we'll get more wards in the near future.

Been thinking about resubing. Stopped playing back in February shortly before we got married. Was just too much going on at the time. Have been playing Wildstar since launch and even through we are in a top 6 world guild (yea, like that means a lot in w*) there just isn't a lot to do other than raid. While I really enjoy the combat system in w* the lack of stuff to do and the community that the game has fostered, getting toxic rather quick, I feel my time with it is over.

So.. I really want to start back up with FF14 for my MMO addiction. I have tried to keep up on the changes since leaving as I did enjoy the game while playing it.

Here's what I think I know:
They added new turns to Coil
They are adding a rogue class
Xpac comes out next spring
They added a new wing to the LFR (CT)
There's something about atma? farming
Animus weapons?

I'm at a loss on what to do or where to start. I am a lvl50 dragoon on Leviathan. I think my ilvl was around 85-90. Had done Turn 1. Had my story/class weapon. Was working on leveling a warrior and archanist.

Without spending the next week. reading through 5000 posts and 100 webpages can you all please provide some form of starting point information for a returning player? Thanks.

Sorry, it's late, so this is just a cursory glance at how you'd want to start back...there's a LOT of stuff to go over...but I'd focus on

First, unlock stuff:
(1) complete all the main story quests, which includes most of the hard mode trials
(2) unlock all the new dungeons you've missed:
The Lost City of Amdapor
Halatali (Hard)
Brayflox's Longstop (Hard)
Hullbreaker Isle
The Tam-Tara Deepcroft (Hard)
The Stone Vigil (Hard)
Syrcus Tower (Crystal Tower 2, people call it ST)
anything new in 2.4
(3) do the hildebrand quests at least until you fight gilgamesh

Next, or really concurrently, work on gathering tomes to buy gear with. There used to be Myth tomes (capped at 300 per week, later raised to 450) and Philosophy tomes (unlimited per week); then philosophy went away and we currently have Soldiery (450 / week) and Myth; a week from tomorrow 2.4 is released and we'll have Poetry (or some similar name, capped #/week ) and Soldiery, while myth will be phased out. The higher tier tomes are always used for the newer, higher level purchasable gear. So get as much as you can to buy new gear with!

There's a bunch of other stuff to do, like the new Hunts (think NMs, but they drop allied seals, a currency, rather than gear), but I won't go into the rest now except for maybe a quick rundown of the relic weapon quest line is:
Base relic weapon (ilvl80) > Zenith (90) > Atma (100, kinda) > Animus (100 for real) > Novus (110) > Nexus (115)

You always go to Gerolt in Hrystmill or a new guy also in Hyrstmill to start the next phase of the quest.

For the Atma phase, you have to equip your Zenith weapon and collect an atma from fates in each of 12 different specific zones. Drop rate is incredibly random, and you can get lucky and get them all in 12hrs or it could take an ungodly amount of time if you're unlucky...but 2.4 is supposed to more-than-double the drop rates, yay!

Animus phase is composed of purchasing 9 'books' from an NPC with tomes, 1 at a time. Each book requires you do 3 specific dungeons, 3 fates, 3 leves, and kill 10x 10 open-world enemies (100 total) with your Atma weapon equipped to complete.

Novus phase = purchase a scroll with tomes, and meld 75 total materia to the scroll with 75 alexandrite, for which there are a few different ways to obtain. Alex takes a little time, but materia can take quite a bit of $$. Might want to do some of your own spiritbonding for that.

Nexus phase = equip your Novus and do fates/dungeons/raids ad infinitum, gathering "lights" for each completion. You basically need 2000 lights, and you get 1-16 "lights" depending on the activity you're doing (nexus light info)

By unlocking all those dungeons etc, you will also unlock your duty roulettes, which is a way to get more tomes once per day for completing certain instances. Theres several categories of roulettes. For instance, expert roulette currently requires having the 3 most recent dungeons unlocked: Hullbreaker, Tam Tara Hard Mode, and Stone Vigil HM. If you do expert roulette, you'll enter one of those dungeons (kinda random which one), and upon completion you get bonus myth and soldiery tomes on top of the normal amount for the dungeon.

When 2.4 releases, they'll probably move the current "expert" dungeons to the next level down, I.E. "high level" roulette, and put the 3 new 2.4 dungeons in the "expert" slot.

Expert vs "high level" doesn't refer to the skill required for the dungeons, by the way. Expert just means they require higher ilvl gear. (Expert dungeons currently drop ilvl 80 gear).

Wonderful. Thanks for all the info. Logged in tonight and did CT to remember the dragoon rotation. Have that down at least now. Saw a fat chocobo so now I need to upgrade to the CE. Mount's legs are so damn funny when he jumps.

I'm trying to figure out how to finish melding novus myself. When i first started I was thinking of parry + accuracy, then I realized parry is useless (I won't hit the next breakpoint with my current gear) so I melded some DET thinking I can make it more DPS friendly... so I'm at a point where I have about 37 melded on my sword all evenly distributed between accuracy, parry and det.

Thinking I should just say fuck it and meld out the rest in crit and skill speed and have the cheapest curtana ever.

I saw a Bravura Novus on the reddit page at one point which was like 15 ss/crit/det/parry/acc lol.

As far as things to do when returning to the game, I think it's been mostly covered - follow the story quest and pick up secondary quests along the way to access all the content that's been added.

One thing I would go out of your way to do is unlock retainer ventures if you haven't. They're really not that important or useful - but they also require no effort and can be lucrative if you get a little lucky. I think to do so you basically just have to talk to the Retainer Advocate or whatever it is in one of the main cities - usually located around the market boards. Then basically set it and forget it once a day or hour.

Thanks all for the advice. Luckily it doesn't sound like we are too far behind the curve and short of forging our weapons should be able to mostly catch up (quests, primals, unlocking dungeons and ST) this week in time for 2.4. Looks like I am sitting on around 600 myth atm. Wondering if I should spend it on something or wait and convert it into soldierly.

I might be doing that. You can redo the novus skills later on and I just want the novus out of the way so I can start doing nexus. Plus I'll just get a weapon from final coil, and paladin isn't my main anymore so i'm not paying too much attention to it (LS needed a war tank).

So I see that they converted my philosophy to myth. And my understanding is that they are introducing tomes of poetry next week with 2.4. Do they plan on converting myth to soldiery when 2.4 drops? And if so it would seem like the best plan would be to farm as much myth as I can this week, get all the ilvl 90 pieces, cap myth and then wait for the conversion? Or should I just cap myth out and wait til next week if/when soldiery has not weekly cap and get that gear?

Also, any recommendations for FC's on Leviathan?

I would assume you convert myth to soldiery with the patch but I wouldn't worry about the i90 gear (at least the main, class specific pieces) since it's much more time efficient to purchase them with hunt seals.
