I can't help thinking SLI won't stick around much longer than it did last time. I mean... when the Voodoo SLI cards were replaced by more powerful single cards, what were people saying? "Man, this single card can do so much more than those two... and it takes up less space in my case too."
SLI isn't a bad thing, I'd like to see it stick around, but I don't think it will. I think it's just a marketing ploy. You'll have to buy a motherboard with two slots, and that's not going to be cheap... I assume the first dual PCIe 16x motherboards will be in the $200 range... so you'll have $400 wrapped up in video cards, an extra $50-100 in a motherboard with dual slots... and it STILL won't be as fast as a 6800 Ultra that you could have bought for $500.
The only advantage of SLI is that you can get a 6600GT now and it'll be fast enough for most things... then when it's too slow you can get a 2nd one, IF you bought a motherboard that supports it... if not, well, you're SOL.

10 days and still no review with real benchmarks.

Another suspect launch from a video card manufacturer.

Bet they're not mass-available before November.

The death of 3dfx's SLI has more to do with the limit of only 1 AGP slot per mobo than anything else. One card running off the AGP slot and another running off the PCI bus would have yielded minimal (or none) performance gains as GPUs became more powerful. PCI-E, of course, removes that bottleneck and that's why SLI is being brought back.

More upgrade options are never a bad thing IMO.

Hexus and the Inq said reviews at the end of the month.

Now, we just need the motherboards to go with them

The real question would be if two 6600s in SLI would actually show improved performence over a $400 card... It'll be interesting show how its pits up against a plain 6800 as its a 256-bit pipe and 12 pipelines, just slower memory... Not to mention ATi is about to unleash their own budget card

The more competition the better, I find it hard to believe ATI would just sit back and watch this happen.

Although it is clocked ~ 31% faster than a 9800pro, the 6600GT is on a 128bit memory bus. So the 9800pro has 36% faster memory (340x2 versus 500).

It?s going to be like a 500Mhz 9500pro. I doubt it will even outrun a 9800pro in game benches.

They say it runs doom 3 at 1600 x 1200, or 1024 x 768 with AA/AF, and doesn't dip below 40 FPS. And I have a feeling drivers will only help improve it. I'm going to have to disagree with you.

8,000+ 3Dmark03. Promising, but it's not real world gameplay. I'd like some Far Cry/Doom 3/Unreal Tournament 2004 benches please.

Hey, it's the first comparison between this and ATI's mid-range offering, even if it's only 3dmark03, over 8k at 1024 x 768 sure sparks my interests.

Huh? Where've I been? What's this 6700Gt. I thought it was a 6600? Is Nvidia coming out with a 6700 too?

Wow Nvidia is really going to take it to ATI across a broad spectrum of markets this round if this card proves to be as good as advertised.

I suspect the 6600GT to win in lower settings, and Ogl games like D3, while the 9800p wins with higher settings and in DX games like HL2. This is just my suspicion based on the specs.

Also, ati will not sit idle. Their X700 will give this card a run for its money. The specs for that card look to be competative. NV's cards seem to be more efficient at the same clock speed as compared to ati, so it still may come out on top of the x700.
