I just installed an 8KNXP. It seems to be a very good board, however the silly thing has 2 problems
First it continually beeps from the internal speaker once every second, this is after WinXP is up and running
Secondly, when I reboot, it runs through the boot screens and stops at the last screen, saying hard disk failure, then I get the blue screen saying fatal exception, yadda, yadda, yadda.
If I turn it off completely, it boots perfectly, then proceeds to
beep at 1 ~ 1 1/2 second intervals.
Gigabyte has no answer yet.
Anybody else got this problem or any ideas?

Sounds like a bad mobo or a bad bios. flash it, check and make sure all fan failure options are set properly. If you don't have a case fan connected to the case fan connector, and the bios is set to beep on failure, then it beep constantly. Same with all other fans.

Does anyone know which is the better performing RAID controller of the two: the Silicon Image controller(on the GA-8KNXP) or the built-in ICH5R one? I know the SI controller has more features, but I don't need hot-swapping and I plan on using RAID 0 with 2 SATA Seagate drives.

The significance for me being whether I use the GA-8KNXP or go with the GA-8IK1100 for $90 less.

I feel really dumb.
Yep it was the threshold values for the temp warning.
It was set for 60c and temp was rising to 70c
Seems high to me, I am used to my AMD running around 40 ~ 45c.
Just switched back to a Pentium.
Anybody wanna say what temp P4's should be at?
I am going out today to get another heatsink to replace the Intel stock one, I got case windows and need something "pretty" to look at on the cpu.

Those do sound high. Check the seating of the heat sink to the CPU. The the values in C or F?? Oh, and I think Intel CPUs run cooler.

I'm in the process of building a new computer, and, after waiting for the release of the 875p motherboards, the 8KNXP looks like a great board - lots of extras, full implementation of the chipset (i.e. CSA), etc. However, the video card that I'd like to get is the Sapphire 9700 Pro Ultimate (http://www.sapphiretech.com/vga/9700proult.asp) with the passive heatsink/heatpipe system.

Looking at the layout of the 8KNXP (and most other 875p boards), it looks like the Northbridge is pretty close to the AGP slot. According to the documentation on the Sapphire website, it looks like there needs to be >22mm (close to an inch) between the face of the video card (chipset side) and the Northbridge to accommodate the rear heatsink.

Could someone with this board do a quick measurement and let me know how much space is available, please?

Thanks,
Chris

Has anyone with this mobo been able to overclock the FSB to 1000 like the abit mobo?

My GA-8KNXP board doesn't have anyhing in it yet(waiting on the cpu) but I measured 15 mm from the corner of the NB fan to the edge of the AGP slot.

Wurrmm - I too would like to hear of how high of an overclock users of the 8KNXP boards are getting. One guy on Hard forum had all the right parts for a really good overclock, but could not go higher than 220 fsb using the Gigabyte. I would like to get either the Gigabyte or Abit. Right now, the Abit has some bios problems that should be worked out. If so, I will probably lean that direction, because several folks are getting into the 250-270 fsb range using 800 CPU's. However, I would really like to get the Gigabyte but have not heard of any real good success stories of overclocking.

The review showed a rock stable overclock to 240 which is pretty good. Realistically, I am not an avid overclocker. I will probably have this new system for over a year without changing it. Even though I don't overclock I still like the option and a good OCing usually means rock stability at default settings.

I realize that this question might not interest the more hardcore participants in this forum, but I am in the process of replacing the motherboard of an existing system that has a P4 400MHz FSB CPU. If I get the GA-8KNXP, will I need to replace the CPU as well? More specifically, does this MB support a 400MHz FSB? I would prefer to delay the cost of upgrading the CPU until the faster ones become more affordable, and I don't know if I will be able to get my existing CPU to OC to a 533MHz FSB.

Please consider your reply carefully, because I have seen many conflicting sources, including Intel's website and Gigabyte's website. The online user's manual on the Gigabyte website states that it will support a 400MHz FSB and, after all, the ASUS P4C800 is supposed to support it. However, technical support at Gigabyte has not been able to answer this question adequately, since every other technician that I have asked has given a different answer without providing any basis for their response.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had direct experience with this issue before I make an expensive mistake.

Wurrmm,

On what are you basing your reply? Do you have personal experience with this, is this just something that you have heard, or is this the conclusion that you have come to based on the same conflicting information that I have read?

He's wrong, it will take a 400fsb CPU as long as it's a Northwood.

I appreciate the replies, but I've been playing this same "he said, she said" crap with Gigabyte for the past two weeks. One person will tell me that the GA-8KNXP will support a 400MHz FSB, then another person tells me that it won't. I have yet to hear from someone who actually claims to have personal experience with this matter to provide any insight, including the good-for-nothing support staff at Gigabyte. I am getting very frustrated, so please excuse the tone of this reply.

I just built a system with the Gigabyte 8KNXP (non-Ultra) with the P4 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB cpu and after about 2 days of screwing with it, I finally got it running so it won't crash at random times (using Win2K).

I think my problem lies in using 1GB Corsair TwinX PC3200LLPT ram. The way I have it running right now is by only having one chip in and using the "Fail-Safe Defaults". I've checked the anandtech review on this MB, and they used the Corsair TwinX ram with 256MB modules and apparently they didn't have any problems.

I'm going to further play around with the settings, but one thing that I noticed, that is really pissing me off, is that even in the advanced BIOS config, it won't allow me to lower the CAS Latency Timer. The only option to choose from is 2. This, ofcourse I find very odd and I'm really hoping Gigabyte changes this with a BIOS update. I feel that if I lowered the CAS Latency to 2.5 or 3 that it might just work in Dual Channel. One thing that I haven't tried yet but will give a shot soon is running both 512MB sticks in NON-Dual Channel. Granted, this won't make me happy, because the whole purpose for buying the TwinX was to be able to run in Dual Channel.

Gigabyte already has 2 BIOS revisions after the one that comes installed on the board, and I'm currently running the most recent, F5.

Unfortunately, I haven't really had much chance to try playing around with anything else because I've just been trying to get the system stable, but I'm running 2xWD800JB's in RAID0 off the GigaRAID PATA Raid controller and that seems to perform very well. I originally was running RAID0 off the Southbridge SATA RAID Controller and using adapters on the HDs, but I switched to the PATA RAID controller while trying to troubleshoot my problems.

Has anyone else been able to get their GA-8KNXP (non-ultra) working with this memory in DualDDR400??

Detailed Specs

Edit: The supported CPU list is not up yet on the site, since it only says 800/533 that is what I am gona believe. I think one of Anands or Toms reviews said 533/800 only also.

I have a quick question for those that purchased this board. I am planning to overclock this board to a FSB of 220-230, which I don't think is entirely unrealistic. My memory however probably will not be able to handle these high speeds, so I will have to use one of the lower FSB:memory ratios. So what ratios does this board offer? If a 5:4 FSB:memory ratio available?

Wurrmm,

I apreciate you trying to help me out, but have you read the GA-8KNXP User's Manual? You can view the first portion of it at the following website:

http://america.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/FileList/Manual/manual_8knxp_e_1.pdf.

Support for a 400MHz FSB is listed throughout this manual. Specifically, take a look at page 5 (page 9 of the PDF). Does your user's manual have the same information? Should I believe the information on the GA-8KNXP Detailed Specifications webpage or the online GA-8KNXP User's Manual?

This same quandry is present on the Intel website at:

http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/875P/?iid=ipp_home+spot1_text&.

The "Intel 875P Chipset Features" chart lists that the motherboard supports "800-/533-MHz System Bus." However, if you view any of the "Technical Information" documents, you will see that support for a 400MHz FSB is stated, repeatedly. Even the chipset diagram on this webpage shows that the CPU-MCH connection operates at "6.4, 4.2 or 3.2 GB/s."

The technical support staff at Gigabyte could not answer this question, so I don't trust the information on their website and I am hoping that someone who has actually tried an Intel P4 CPU with a 400MHz FSB in this MB could give me an answer. No one at Gigabyte can figure out how to do this. However, I'm sure that someone else has tried this at some point.

The Canterwood reviews on both sites are so full of errors it's not even funny. From the manual:

Socket 478 for Intel® Micro FC-PGA2 Pentium® 4 processor
Support Intel® Pentium® 4 (Northwood, Prescott) processor
Support Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology (Note)
Intel® Pentium® 4 800/533/400MHz FSB

Also:

Memory Frequency For
for FSB(Front Side Bus) frequency=400MHz,
2.0 Memory Frequency = Host clock X 2.0.
2.66 Memory Frequency = Host clock X 2.66.
Auto Set Memory frequency by DRAM SPD data. (Default value)

Also note the new BIOS, which is specific for 400MHz CPUs.

And people on the GB newsgroup(alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.gigabyte) have done it, should anyone care to ask there.
