Tonight I remounted the CPU Heatsink, closely following the procedure for ArticSilver III at http://www.articsilver.com.

Found some GoofOff (bad stuff) at WAL*MART to clean the old compound off and coffee filters of all things (lint free) to get the CPU heat spreader and the Alpha PAL8942T squeaky clean. Followed up with 91% Isopropyl and more coffee filters. (Melita #4)

Pre treated the Alpha with ASIII and put a thin coat (a BB's worth) on the 3.0/800 P4 with a single edge razor blade; and avoiding the hole . Was really careful this time. Heatsink went down straight and no sliding.

Now idling at 35 degrees. That should improve even more after breaking-in.

Not bad... considering the fan is a noiseless 26.5 CFM Pabst 8412N/2GML 19 dBA @ 2050 RPM. Well-worth spending the time to do it right.

I can`t quite get to DCDDR400 but running at 387 2-6-2-2 2.7v. Need more Vc to run my 2.4 at 3g+ Like on the 8PE667U, At least I hope so!

My main goal is to build a computer now with a MB that is highly upgradable, but saving on other components until I can afford the best. BTW, if I can OC my P4 1.8A up to 2.4GHz on a 133MHz FSB for now, I will be ecstatic.

you might be able to get your 1.8 to 2.4...i was able to clock my 1.8A to 2.5 on my old motherboard (asus P4S333) but on my 8IK1100...i couldnt get past 2.35...so there may be a limit of overclocking you can do on this board with the older P4's...that being said...i ran my 1.8 at 2.2 until my new cpu came...so im pretty sure your P4 1.8a can do something similar (or even better)...just make sure that your agp/pci freqs. are locked.

btw...sorry for the late reply.

Anyone have any reccomendations as to quality heat sinks for this board? I was going to purchase the Zalman CNPS700-AuCu; I discovered however that this heatsink interferes with the DPS fan.

Thanks

<chuckling>

Funny... My view is that the DPS Fan interferes with the heatsink.

Based upon 3 reviews of the board so far, the DPS doesn't do much and appears to be marketing hooey. So I'm opting not to use it. I swapped the LED fan to the Northbridge sink and left it naked without the Gigabyte Ultra fan guard to improve the airflow. Looks cool too.

Perhaps I'll resume using it after an eventual CPU upgrade, but for now it appears to be unnecessary.

Hey Guys, just wanted to let you know that I have ordered the 8knxp from Mwave today. It should be here next week and I can't wait.

The main reason I'm writing this message is that I remember reading somewhere about the optimization of the Pentium 4 processor. This is the order you install drivers so that you get the most out of your system.

The way Intel suggest to do is the following.

1. Windows XP (Pro)
2. Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility
3. Microsoft Directx
4. Intel Application Accelerator
5. Any drivers there after

Is this the best way or should something be changed like service pack on XP or something else?

Let me know.

Thanks

I don't have winxp but I was just told by a giga-byte tech to use SP1 for winXP. They told me to install the SP before the intel chipset.

Anyway sorry about the stutter.

The recent shipping version of XP contains SP1. I did a test install and it did not enable USB 2.0 support. I will try the original native version with no SP1. Unfortunately until Gigabyte resolves my SCSI BIOS issue, I won't be doing much wtih this new barn burner.

I need memeory suggestions for the 8KNXP, I have no idea what to buy and I know there have been compatibility issues. I do not intend to overclock I just want some fast and STABLE memory. I want 1 gig, what is the best configuration, 2 512mb sticks or 4 256mb sticks? Thanks.

It's like I said in another message. I like Crucial memory. I'm going to go with 2 512mb stick and going to set up dual channel. I have a friend who went with the gigabyte 8INXP board and he put in 4 256mb modules.

Crucial has never given me a problem. I would say either one should allow you to use DDR and if you go with 2 sticks that leaves you room to upgrade without having to remove memory.

I hear what you are saying and I will be interested. I have one of the first copies of Windows XP, so I had to download the service pack. I did that and will get it burned on to a CD later. Sorry about the SCSI BIOS problem. I wish I could really be of help.

Sorry :frown:

Yeah for now I disabled USB 2.0 in bios, I can't get a driver for it. I really only need usb 2.0 on my other pc so it's no emergency. Also the vcore limit of 1.6 seems weird are they going to bios update that? I don't run it overclocked but I oc it once to get a 3dmark score.

No there probably won't be a bios update for it as the D1 stepping processors are quite voltage sensitive

I got this from my friend and I was told it was from Intel:

The correct driver installation order is as follows:

1 Fresh Operating System Installation
2 Latest Service Pack or Patch
3 Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility (INF Utility)
4 All other device drivers
5 Intel(R) Application Accelerator if needed
6 Microsoft* DirectX* 8.0 or higher

don't know if it is true....

This is what I'm looking for. I agree with you that it looks a bit differnt than what Intel has on thier web site. The order of the last three are the questions. With Intel they say

4 Microsoft* DirectX* 8.0 or higher
5. Intel(R) Application Accelerator if needed
6. All other device drivers.

Again thanks for the information.

Javic,

I have the same system and the same problem. Random BSOD/lockups. Currently I'm using the GA-8KNXP, 2 Corsair 3200LL 2CS 512, Pentium 4 3GHz, and 2 WD Raptor HDs in RAID 0. However, I can't get past the last step (saving) of Windows XP installation. Before that it was worse, kept rebooting all the time. I read the forums about changing the timing and read the RAM GUY'S comments on the Corvair forum about the stability of the 3200LL memory. I tried to change the timing as indicated, but no joy - same problems.

Can you ( or anyone else ) get in touch with me and share with me your configuration so I can get this thing working, please?

I'm getting ready to return the 3200LL for 3500 as I don't see any alternative. I don't think that Gigabyte is very responsive to consumer's needs.

Also, I know that the RAM GUY said that Gigabyte techs had some sort of BIOS update they haven't released yet that fixes the problem. But, they haven't posted it yet (arghh!). If you or anyone else here has it, would you mind emailing it to me, pretty please?

Thanks to all

I have the GA-8KNXP Ultra, 3.0/800 and 2x512 Twinx 3200LL. BIOS is F5, Load Optimized Defaults, timings CAS2/2T/5T/2T and +0.1 Volts, Top Performance. No BSODs. All IDE/RAID is disabled, running SCSI. XP Full Retail Install with SP1 imbedded.

I too have a BIOS issue concerning SCSI. Running on 1x72GB 15k.3 Cheetah, waiting on a BIOS fix for the Adaptec 7902W ASIC. When I can actually configure the HostRAID, I'll be running two of these striped for RAID0. To date, system just has been stress tested frequently with Sandra Burn-In, not actually in production until I have HostRAID support working. (I DO wonder what will happen when I add a second pair of TwinX 3200LL 512s)

When I finally reached a human in California Gigabyte Support, they have been responsive and concerned with my issue. Gent's name is Lawrence and he has kept me updated with what the SW Engineers iin Taiwan are up to by voice and email. After testing my report, they readily agreed that SCSI has a problem and they are working on a fix. I'm a SAN engineer and know how it goes.. so I am pretty patient.

Last night, replaced existing Alpha 8942T heatsink with a Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu. No room for DPS Module, but I wasn't using it anyway. This sink is a _very tight fit_ on this board and it just clears the first stick by 3/16". That stick will not be coming out with this heatsink attached. The thing is quiet even at full speed, so the included FanMate1 rheo is really unnecessary with all of the other ventillation happening.

(Case is LianLi PC75 with 4 Panaflo Mediums on the rear and 2 Panaflo Highs on the front controlled by FrozenCPU's 6 Port Baybus. PS is a PerformancePC custom-sleeved Enermax 651 with Antec blue LED fans [The Antecs will be swapped-out with more Panaflos.. noisy] All custom wiring is sleeved/shrinked to length by mois with soldered connections. All opticals will be gradually sent out for silver vinyl dying by PerformancePCs)

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know that I got the 8knxp (Non-Ultra) board last night. I was able to install it and fired it right up. However, I ran out of time to work on it (bed time :frown, but need my sleep I was able to get it to see the memory.

I need to do a lot of wire mangement and connect everything. I should be able to start loading Windows XP on Saturday. Too many other things that need to be done between now and then. So I will let you know how it goes. Here is a quick spec of the computer so that you can see what I used

Processor: 2.8GHZ
memory: 1024Meg (2x512 meg) Crucial Will use DDR
video: ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Hard drives: 240 Gigs (2x120 Gig Maxtors 6y120p0) RAID 0
DVD: Toshiba
DVD Writer: Sony
Soundcard: Soundblaster Live 5.1
Case: Thermaltake Xaser III with 420 Watt Power

Also using dual power, also my board shipped with F4 BIOS. I plan to update it to F5. (Almost sounds like a tornado ). I got a CPU tempature at idel of 44 degree C. I put what I thought was ThermalTape on top of the processor and the tempature of the process went to 95 degrees. So I shut it down and took it off. It's running nicely at 44.

More later.

With the Zalman, 3.0/800 P4 idles at 30C and under severe stress is topping out at 44C. Compound is the new AS Ceramique. Supposedly needs about 12 hours to settle in, but looks promising with the initial stress test.

Getting this Zalman sink screwed down was a bitch.

I was going to buy a 8KNXP with your CPU and RAM but now I'm not so sure.

Have you got your board running at 2-2-5-2?

What's your RAM voltage?

Any feedback greatly appreciated.:brokenheart:
