The cost justification of getting PC2700 vs PC3200 just does not equate. The max bandwidth in Dual channel mode for each is 5.4 vs 6.4 gb/sec. Yet the cost is more than double. I agree that ddr400 is the way to go, perhaps when their pricing stabalizes.

When I built this rig it came down to 512 or pC3200 or 1gb of PC2700, I felt that the boost that the extra 512 provided was better than the extra 1 gb/sec bandwidth.

i agree, especially as the rig tallman is building is designed for intensive video and photo editing.

however, if one were to go for 512Mb (2x256mb) of pc3200 now, would it be possible to still run dual channel if one were to upgrade to 1Gb of pc3200 by filling the remaining two dimm slots with 2x256mb pc3200? (ie. 4x256mb?)
Assuming i'm using identical ram sticks.

i am considering this upgrade path for my memory....

That upgrade should work fine.

Dual channel mem limit is 2gb, to gain more then single channel is the way to go.

To use all 4 mem banks and still run in single channel mode, you would have to use 1gb sticks for a total system mem of 4gb, or simply mix mem sizes in the matching mem slots (ie 1and 3, 2 and 4).

Can someone with a Gigabyte 8IPE1000 tell me the height of the heatsink?

I know the Pro's is about 19mm and it additionally has a fan stuck on it. I am wondering specifically whether Gigabyte used a larger HS on the non-Pro (sans fan) due to passive heat dissapation requirements and thus if I get a Pro, whether a taller HS such as the Zalman ZM-NB32J (32mm tall) will be necessary to run without a fan.

I have not seen the MK online anywhere. mwave has good prices on Gigabyte stuff and googlegear also has a good selection. Perhaps the mATX will just take a bit longer before retail availability. I guess they are mostly a system builder thang.

I would like an MK too if I could find a good mATX tower case with provisions for full-sized cards and power supply. It seems silly to have a big-ass ATX board and case and only make use one or two of five PCI slots. I may settle for a Pro and consider the 865PE based Shuttle if/when it ever comes out. I have already held out long enough, even skipping the 845 when it seemed that might have been the one to get. I am glad I waited now for the 865 & HT but I cannay wait no more!

I discovered the HS's are different on the 1000's and 1000Pro but still not sure about the height of the former. What's so "Pro" about noise anyway? They should not have used a fan but just a big HS. Apparently, it is equipped with a "SmartFan" ability to adjust the speed of the northbridge and CPU fans based on CPU temp but still...

Anyhoo, I am thinking that with a Zalman 7000 the air from that might flow across a tall enough northbridge HS.

Hmm, looks like a nice mATX case... but then the MK does not have the room around the northbridge HS for a large VPU HS like my Zalman ZM80A-HP which is one of the reasons I was considering the GA-8IPE1000 in the first place. Natch.

Ordered the MK (I don't need ANY PCI slots, actually, so it'll do) along with 512MB of Kingston DDR400 memory to replace the DDR266 currently in. It'll be here(Israel) in 1-2 days.
Hoping to be able to run it at 3ghz at all times. (its a 2.4B)

that really pisses me off that it would available to certain parts of the world but not others

now if it was something like japan i would be more understanding, but it seems to be available in europe and the former ussr as well as israel it would seem.

Edit:
Ok, talked to gigabiteme and they said they will most likely not be selling the MK model of this board in the US. The will be selling a 865G MK model but I'd prefer not to have integrated graphics. So, can someone give me a line on an oversea's reseller who: 1. has this board in stock and 2. ships to the US?

Seems like a lot of trouble importing a board that you would have a bear of a time returning if something is wrong. What does the MK have that the Pro does not ?

A svelt figure.

I'm kinda keen on the MK too, but not so keen to order from the EU -at least not without considering other options. Don't any of the other big mobo co's like Asus have equivalent mATX offerings?

The MK is simply a smaller (3 PCI slots vs 5) board, I think. yes, its quite odd that of all the places they would choose not to sell their boards in the US :|

General impressions of the 1000MK:
-Gigabyte has crappy BIOS. I can't check my AGP settings ANYWHERE.
-memory settings for me (133fsb) are x2 (ddr266) and x2.5 (ddr333 which I'm running now).
-memory speed, hum. running dual channel 333mhz. only 3.1gb/sec in SANDRA. was expecting more.
-nowhere can I set memory timings. I'm stuck with this RAM's default CAS3, I think.
-Gigabyte needs to put out a better BIOS!!!
-installation was hell, my fault just make sure you have full version of xp if thats what you're running. upgrades, I think, are out of luck, since they have no DOS setup. or install Win98 on top of it.
-jack-sensing is a nice feature.
-on a side note I also bought GTA: Vice City.
-SANDRA tells me to add more CPU's for added performance

Now for the problems. when I'm trying to OC, if I get past ~2600mhz (147-8mhz FSB) system locks. I know its not the RAM or mobo now. I'm left with the CPU itself...and the single PCI USB card. however I set fixed PCI/AGP to 33/66, so I'm not sure what the problem is, and what I need to do. In the mean running at a pitiful 2.4ghz

I'd just like to say..u should read the manual !!
if u want to access ur mem timings u press ctrl+f1 in the main screen
If u have CL3 RAM 3.1Gb/sec is pretty good
When u say AGP settings the only AGP thing is AGP flexible..u chose either Auto or 4x

Do some tweaking then see wat u can get

heh, missed that in the manual (found it now
I'm using CAS3 DDR400 memory now, it runs ok at DDR 350 with CAS2. 3.3-3.4GB/sec.

I got a 8IPE1000 Pro and the System and Power fan headers have power but do not register the RPM. What up wid dat?

Idle temperature is 31 C with a Zalman 7000 Al an minimal fan speed. Seems low. What up wid dat?

There are two other temps besides the HDD that each register 25 C and do not seem to fluctuate. One ought to be the case but I am not sure.

I am using SpeedFan. The BIOS fan control seems limited to a high/low speed function crossing at 40 C. I expected it would be configurable.

What CPU do you have, I used the same mb w/2.6C stock hs and fan and idle temps were 25c ? SLK3700 case

2.4C. What are you using to monitor? I doubt 25 is the CPU.

I discovered the fan header sensors are working (used non-sensing fan by mistake) but SpeeFan still cannot control the System or Power fan, only CPU. No beeg deal though. The EasyTune 4 software has SmartFan settings beyond those in the BIOS so I will have to mess around with that and see how it works.

easytune reports wrong(lower) temps. weird, because the bios itself gives (what looks like) the correct ones. 32C idle here.

With mine, the BIOS, EasyTune and SpeedFan concur on CPU temp.

SpeedFan reads two addtional temps of 25 which AIDA shows as Motherboard and Aux but they never change and since they are not listed in EasyTune expect them to be superfluous.

So far, I am pleased with this board. My last two have been Abit and I did intend to get their 865PE offering until seeing how poorly layed out and difficult to work with the IS-7 was. The Gigabyte does not have anything annoying about it and has lots of room for big heatsinks, plus it seems to overclock almost as well. The Abit does have "RAID" 0 but other than that comparable features and price. Now I am hoping Gigabyte comes through with "PAT" enabling as others are.

Was wondering if anyone knew why the 8IPE1000 is picky about overclocking, have a P4 1.8A that ran 2.4GHz@1.625v on a Asus P4S333, ran the same @1.675v on the Asus P4P800, but I can't get even a 110FSB out of this board, is there anything i'm missing?

I have PC3200 ram & will go to a real P4 like the 2.4C, but for now i'm worried that when I do migrate to the newer P4 it won't overclock, would I be better off with a Abit IS7?

Mine's been running at 241 FSB since shortly after setting it up and I have read of others running 250 so my plan was to test the CPU o'c independent of memory in stages to really be sure of stability but since it has been purring along with more pep than I really need I haven't been arsed to mess with it. One thing that I don't like is there is no clear CMOS jumper (the battery has to be removed) if you fug up the settings.

Still, your experience is weird and I can't think of what it could be if the memory is not the problem.
