they are going to support it with an updated Bios.... it's in the article... but it did get me thinking... what would I do with a Kentsfield?? I don't even know how to make my Allendale work 100%.. everything in gaming is so GPU dependent.. Photoshop seems to be a little faster but then again... it's all XP's fault for being a crappy ineffecient 32-bit OS

alright i see it under the chart.

its not the fact that we might not need quad cores to me. its the resale value of my board im worried about.

NV my original question, but I find it odd that a bios flash didn't fix my problem.

I had 2 sticks of Patriot PC5300, one went bad so I'm left with only one, and I find that the PC gets "stuck" loading the bios either right before it lists the 1GB of memory or in the middle of it, ie it doesn't show all the numbers.

I have to turn the PSU off, wait 10 seconds, and then power back on for it to finish booting correctly.

Is the other stick probably bad in some way as well or is this a bios setting that's wrong?

Just wanted to post my system and experience with this board. I have an E6600, a 7950gt ko, and 2X1GB PC2-6400 800mhz Patriot RAM. This is the best board I have had. The RAM works very well, and everything has been stable since first boot. I have messed around with the clock a little bit, but nothing major. Im not a power user (yet), but I highly reccomend this board.

I like my setup so much that I just ordered a OCZ|OCZ600GXSSLI 600W PSU, an ANTEC|P180B case, a 16mb 250 gig Caviar, a 36.7 gig Raptor, a Thermalright Ultra-120 heatsink, 3 yate loon 120 fans, and some HD cooling as well. Should be coming in next week, so Ill be hitting ya'all up for some OC'ing advice....

Hi,
I would like to know if this board is compatible with TV2000XP Expert tv tunner from Leadtek. The tunner is working fine on other systems.
My system doesn't start with this card.

Could someone recommend some nice value ram that will give me a decent OC with this board? $250-300+ is insane to spend on ram for 2gigs.

I read the conroe buying guide here, but the ram they listed for value is mostly out of stock or not availble in 2gig modules anymore. lame

Well I just read the whole thread.

I ordered a new board and have a 6300 on route.

The memory question is interesting. I've heard the dividers work differently then the AMD 64 boards.

I am also trying to figure out which memory to order. A friend mentioned with the 6300 to order ddr2 800 ram for the OC.

I'll post expeiences when I get the stuff.

As far as the temp stuff goes remember bios temp reads are usually wrong at best. Temp probes are the most reliable. Use the bios temps as a guide. The Conroes run hotter then the AMD64 chips I've been told.

Well, my 965P-DS3 is on it's way (full list of parts in this link) and I still have some questions, specifically about my HD and DVD connections, and the driver installation order.

Going to be using an IDE NEC3550A DVDRW, and a SATA Seagate 7200.10 HD (link).

1) Should I remove the jumper that I've read about on the drive to make it 3Gb/sec?

2) I know I'm connecting the IDE optical drive to the IDE controller, so since it's going to be the only device on this IDE controller should it be jumpered as MASTER?

3) Should I connect the HD to the orange (Intel SATA) or purple (Gigabyte SATA) connector? If the Intel connector, should I change the default from LEGACY IDE to NATIVE (SATA) in the BIOS? My concern here is that if I do this, will I need to press F6 for a driver load during the XP installation? I have not planned to connect a floppy drive to this machine, and prefer to not have to do this unless necessary. If I do need a driver, which one? I notice the driver for this on Gigabytes website (link) just indicates SATA RAID. Does it still apply though if I'm using any setting other than having the connection set to legacy IDE?

4) Once I have all of this up and running, should the Intel INF driver (also on the same page as linked about) be the first thing I install? Then proceed with the usual video, DirectX, etc...?

Sorry for all of these questions, but I've never used SATA before, and I'm at a loss, especially with the two different types of connectors and trying to avoid connecting a floppy to the system. I've read a lot of the posts here, along with the manual from Gigabyte's site, but I'm still in the dark it seems. So, if anyone can give me some feedback I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Tom

Tomstevens26:

1. yes

2. yes

3. for the most straightforward setup hook the HD up to the Intel SATA and leave it on legacy IDE until you have Windows installed and the Intel chipset driver. Then you can flip it to native mode.

4. Pretty much

Hi,
Quick question, when burning 2 dvd's at once I can't get it to burn faster than 4x which completes in about 15 minutes. When I had the same two dvd burners attached to my old P4 3.0Ghz they would burn at full speed in about 7 minutes. I noticed in nero is shows the adaptor as jraid instead of atapi. Am I doing something wrong? Because there is only one IDE controller I have one set up as master and one as slave, this never posed a problem before. Hope someone can shed some light on this.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply! I thought I had read that if you switch to native mode after installing windows in legacy mode, windows will not boot and you'll get BSOD. Did I get that mixed up and confused with something else?

When you install the intel chipset driver it should be installing what you need to run the ICH8 SATA in native mode.

I may be wrong here, but I think it's taking longer because they're sharing the one IDE controller and cable to read and write off, which isn't as good as if they were both (for the sake of argument) set as slave on channels 0 and 1 on an older 2 channel system.

It's even very well possible to switch HDD to the purple port after installation.
I have the same HDD and I was expecting the HDD to perform better on the JMicron, because the ICH8 doesn't support NCQ, at least as far as I know.
But when I tried switching the drive between those two ports and measuring the speed, it was pretty much equal.. I also found other thing - when I connect the HDD to the purple port, no program I got was able to get SMART information (includung temperature) from it in Windows.

Awesome! Thanks for the replies re: setting up the HD. I guess I'll try using the Intel port, installing in legacy mode, then doing the INF file, then changing to native and seeing how that goes. I'll plan on keeping it in the Intel slot.

Tessien: I've also read that the ICH8 does not support NCQ. I believe the ICH8R does? Regardless, is there any noticeable performance difference non-NCQ vs NCQ, or is it just a benchmark thing?

One more question if you guys don't mind... installing the HSF. I've read conflicting instructions. Intels info on their website shows the installation of the HSF while the mobo is in the case. The manual for the DS3 clearly has the installation done outside the case, since it has you check for the 4 pins under the board to make sure they are pushed thru.

Thanks again for the help!

Okay,
Just figured out that the jraid controllers caused the problems, once I removed the raid configure program through add/removed programs the IDE port was re-recognized as standard atapi ports and everything works fine.

I've had my board up a week. JMicreon RAID0 is about 10% slower than NF4 RAID0 from my DFI NF4 Lanparty board. Also, the drivers from the set-up disk gave me nothing but bluescreens: I downloaded the 1.14 drivers fixing the problem immediately.

DDR2 prices have gone crazy....all of a sudden. I bought 2 GB of Patriot PC2 - 5400 two weeks ago from Newegg. After seeing your post, I looked again, but the price has gone up to $230. There is a rebate, but still over $200.

Even DDR is up, so it seems. You don't suppose the oil companies are in ca-hoots with memory manufacturers?

I paid $150 and $170 back in late July when C2D came out... prices have nearly doubled! I guess C2D significantly upped demand?

Yes this is true, I was going to wait it out and buy the RAM after a month or two, but I couldn't resist with all the rest of my parts already along the way. I jumped on the $40 rebate Corsair XMS2 PC6400 DDR2 800MHz last night on newegg.com. I think it's also available on zipzoomfly.com.

I figure if they price drops again and I've got the extra cash I might put in another 2GB.

I just set up my raid with 2x400gb seagate on jmicron. Can I still hook up a DVD burner and another HD on IDE channel?

Well, NCQ means that the disk has it's queue for incoming read/write requests and should be able to change order of these requests to better fit how the data are physically placed on the drive, therefore reducing the need of disk heads moving there and back again. It should improve random reads, sequential read of long files would be pretty much the same. As I wrote, I was trying to measure the difference with some benchmarks and it seemed to be the same, so...

I think that unless you have HSF that requires you to put someting under the board you can do both. I attached it outside of the case, because I have better access to it then.

I have one problem too - if I set the sleep mode to S3 (Suspend To RAM) in BIOS and then sleep the computer from Windows XP, it seems to go to sleep OK (except that ALL the fans turn off, including PSU fan, which I'm not sure is how it should be - my other computer leaves PSU fan on).
But when I try to turn it on again, it doesn't work. HDD & DVD diodes light up for a while, but monitor doesn't get any signal from graphics, keyboard nor mouse get any juice. Even when I do hard reset or switch it off/on, it doesn't help. I have to turn the power switch on PSU off/on, then the computer boots normally.

Anyone experienced something like this? I am used to not turn the computer off, instead I just sleep it, so I don't have to wait for boot
