I may be off track here, but I think I would try uninstalling that controller in device manager and then rebooting. Assuming of course you are running F7 when you do that, it should set it correctly.

I'm certainly no expert on this, but that seems like a harmless way to try. Make sure you deinstall the one directly above your dvd device in the device manager.

Your screenshot looks the same as any of the Primary IDE Channel Properties with no 'Device Type:' attached. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for my DVD-RW is 'Ultra DMA Mode 6'. I really don't know if that's good or bad!

Edit:
My DVD-RW is actually Ultra DMA Mode 2. The hard drive is Ulta DMA Mode 6.

Well i just copied 529 MB from my Nec3520 to my raid0 array in 2 minutes and 20 seconds. I have no idea if that is good or not. But it seemed normal compared to my previous systems.

My bad, you two were correct. This one is for the 3500. Originally it was set to PIO only, but there was no improvement after changing it and rebooting. I will try uninstalling the controller in a little bit.

Edit: Just defaulted to PIO mode again.

i didn't read through all of the posts, but it has information for resetting the dma/pio mode so that windows redetects on reboot (hopefully to something faster). i had this problem when my hard drive was dying and continually downgraded the transfer speed.

I think I've got the situation under controll.
What helped was:
Bios -> Integrated Peripherals -> OnBoard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode: Changed from 'IDE' to 'RAID/IDE'
That did it !!!
Now all IDE devices are detected properly as Ultra DMA Mode 2.

Nice find...........finally my HDTach reports the drive speed correctly.

I ran the setup and rebooted and checked everything and it looks fine. The controller name is different but that is the only difference I can see. It isn't doesnt have the GB name on the controller anymore. This is a much newer driver, so it should be good.

I need some help with manually setting the memory speeds. Here's what I've got:
DS3 w/ F7 BIOS
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB TWIN2X2048-6400C4 (4-4-4-12)

Auto settings are giving me 5-5-5-18 at (I believe 1.8v) I would like to get to 4-4-4-12, of course, but I need help (and I mean step by step 'cause I'm an idiot).

Someone, please, tell me what to do!

I'll take a crack at some of this.

First of all, those timings from the MFG are the timings for it to run at 667mhz. Mayeb I"m wrong on that. This memory has that enhanced profile stuff.

Next go find some reviews on your exact memory and see what speeds and timings they were able to achieve. Do some research before you do anything.

Also, and most important ....google Memtest86+ and download it and create a bootable CD of it. That way you can tinker with your settings and test them before booting into windows and corrupting your hard drive.

That should keep you busy for a while and then we can answer your next questions.

OK I found that it wont run any higher than 800mhz with those epp timings. SO if you are overclocking and want those tight timings, you'll need to drop the multiplier. I also saw you need 2.1V for the epp. But it wont set it automatically unless you have an nforce chipset so you will have to set it yourself manually in the bios. Hit CTrl F1 on the main bios page to get access to the advanced options. And boot up that memtest86+ Cd whenever you make a change for a while.

Thanks for the info - I've run memtest and everything is groovy - no errors after 15 hours. I don't have the PC in front of me but I'm almost positive the mem is at 800mhz with the 5-5-5-18. From what I've learned so far I need to bump the voltage to 2.1 then set the timings manually to 4-4-4-12. Tell me if I'm right so far.
If so, what I need help with are the specific settings changes I need to make after I'm in via Ctrl F1. There are things in there I'm not sure of.

Page 43 of your motherboard manual will show you the memory timings and voltage.

I use the onboard sound on my DS3 but I hate the Gigabyte sound control panel.

I tried the original Realtek ones and I still get the Gigabyte control panel. Even after a clean format.

Anyone running a RAID array of any type? I'm considering running two separate RAID 0 stripes...is this possible on the DS3? If not, is anyone running a RAID 0 stripe? Any probs?

I have a raid zero array of 2 Hitachi 80 gb Sata II drives.

Some of the manufacturers like Realtek embed several brand specific extras in their drivers. In this case, I'm pretty sure there is some Giga-byte branded stuff in the Realtek drivers from Realtek's site that are being installed. Pretty much nothing that you can do about it.
