I've had my E6400, DS3, Patriot 2GB system setup for a few days now. First impression is that the IDE port is in the stupidest spot ever. Besides that it's an easy build. If anyone has any suggestions for IDE to SATA converters for my DVD burner and a hard drive though I'm all ears.

I noticed the power supply connection was on the opposite side of the motherboard next to the ram? Seems like an odd place also.

I finally got my system to work fine.
Ds3, E6400, gig Ram (2x1GiG A-Data Vitesta + 2x512 Corsaor Value select, both in 1.8v, CAS4). Working fine. Gonna run 3DMark w/ EN7600GS and see the results.

Btw, what is the best prog out there to use to O/C other than Gigabyte's EasyYuner?
And what the most stable speeds with w/ this mobo?

That's not really a problem though. You'll definitely notice the IDE connector though since it'll be taut enough to make putting your videocard in and hooking up SATA ports a tight fit. Especially if you have a big card like a x1900xt.

It's doable though.

That's why I'm glad I have a rounded IDE cable. It'll be easier to deal with. I have to wait for Tues. when my stuff arrives!!! Argh too long

I am looking to build a stock system that will not be OC'ed, in the begining...

However, if I feel comfortable I may notch it up a little. Is it a good idea to buy this board or step down to the S3??? The parts I am getting>>>

E6600
2gig ram One of the ones that works with the GS3 or S3
eVGA 9700 GT
Sata2 HD
NEC 3550 DVD burner

dakotagts: You need to be specific on your RAM, many RAM modules are not well supported by this board it seems.

The 1.8V Patriot 2GB PC5300 kit works fine. I haven't had to flash the bios or anything.

I got rounded cables. I think you'd have to buy some if you don' t have them with this board.

I'd just like to let you guys know that this board doesn't work with my G.Skill model F2-5400PHU2-2GBLA. I got a 2GB (2x1GB) kit and have haven't gotten the system to boot. My friend bought the exact same setup as me (E6400, G.Skill, Gigabyte DS3) and he had the same problem. He got his friends ram to boot the DS3 but no amount of vdimm or timing changes would make it boot with the G.Skill. Can anyone recommend some cheaper ram that would work so I don't have to waste even more money? Thanks in advance.

Did you update to the latest bios? Did you try one stick at a time? I've heard they've released an updated bios that fixes some of the RAM problems. Others might know better first hand though.

Anandtech recommends:

1) ADATA VITESSA ELJKD1A16K

2) WINTEC AMP

Or 3) Corsair XMS2-6400C4

You might like to read the complete article about memory and much more...

Yeah, I tried 1 stick at a time in all 4 slots. I tried the other stick in all 4 slots. My friend flashed to the latest bios on Gigabyte's website. That anandtech article didn't really talk about this motherboard, but maybe I should've taken their recommendations anyways.

Alright, two quick things, first a question.

I'm running two Sata2 drives, and just wondering if I should use the 2 GSATAII ports or the other SATA ports going through the ICH8. I'd rather use the ICH8 ports and keep the SATA traffic off the PCIe bus, but I don't believe I can enable ACHI if I'm not on the GSATAII ports, any ideas?

Secondly, just got the board up and running without any hitches out of the box. Had the following components without a problem.

E6600
Patriot 2x1GB DDR2 667 Kit (PC2 5300)
eVGA Geforce 7900 GT KO Superclocked (N567-AX)
2x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200KS SATA drives

Edit: Added the HD info

Well I went with 2GB 6400 OCZ EL Plat, and am able to boot and run windows fine. But my system won't pass memtest86+ test #5, and I've had a couple of BSODs already. I have my vdimm set to +0.3v. Should I just assume this OCZ won't work with this board?

Update: I tried some OCZ value from PCClub and it still didn't work. They then sold me some "generic" (CPU-Z says it's SpecTek) 512 sticks because they were all out of 1gb sticks of kingston and buffalo, so I'll probably get some of that whenever it comes in. RMA refunding my G.Skill back to Newegg.

No, the WORST connection is the ATX +12V aux connector BEHIND the CPU socket. Try connecting that sucker with fat fingers when you've got a Tuniq Tower-style cooler mounted.

Good assumption.

OCZ ram has terrible compatibility issues with the DS3 (as well as the DS4 and DQ6, apparently). Supposedly they are working on it, but I wouldn't chance it.

Stick to RAM that is gonna work, like Corsair or Patriot. (Or my cheap-arse Samsung PC4200 which does 675MHz )

Wow, OCZ and G.Skill are getting a terrible reputation with DS3. Whassup with that?

G.Skill does seem to have some issues on certain sticks, but overall OCZ has a bigger compatibility problem - by far.
