You might try one optical and one hard drive and see if that fails. Then add an optical and another hard drive. It would not beyond the realm of possibility for one of the drives or cables to be failing intermittantly and causing the problem to look like something else.

If that doesn't solve anything....what bios is your board. I dont' remember if you said?

The BIOS is F6 (which seems to be dated the same as DS3 F7). I'll try the single-drive experiment soon. Thanks for the ideas!

I already have an e6600 so I was wondering would any one these choices really work the best on the ds3 and oc really good?

The first one (i.e. GSKILLS) works fanstastic!! I haven't tried overclocking them but they work very stable at 2.0 volts 800 Mhz and 4-4-4-12.. Can probably take a lot more beating if you want...

Quick question to the all knowing (or all who knows):

I was curios as to whether I can enable AHCI for SATA in bios on my computer which already has windows XP setup (i.e. no f6 preinstallation). As per previous posts, I moved HD to gigabyte Sata ports and changed the mode to AHCI. Windows started and then BAM blue screen. I tried to change everything back to the original IDE config but the system would not finish loading windows before restarting! Had to reimage the drive back to an earlier state... Is this because I didn't do the f6 thing with the Gigabyte driver? I'm not going to reinstall windows anytime soon (vista is coming to me soon)...

My sys config:
DS3 + 6300 @ 2.8 (1.2 V!!)
2GB GSkills
250 WDC SII

I'm pretty sure you can do this (my own hard drive troubles notwithstanding). You just need to install the JMicron JMB363 driver before you enablke AHCI mode (in other words, leave the BIOS set to IDE mode, then boot windows and install the driver, then reboot and enable AHCI). You can download the driver from the Gigabyte site but there is a much newer version floating around (I think someone posted a link to this thread a while back). I think the only time you need to use the F6 procedure is if you are trying to install Windows while using a raid array as your boot drive. In that case you need to have the AHCI/RAID mode enabled and therefore Windows Setup needs the driver installed right at the beginning order to recognize the disks.

Do i need to reinstall windows? My windows XP was setup with everything in the IDE mode (native IDE mode). I did install the Gigabyte SATA II driver from GB's website, which I assume is the same as Jmicron...

I'm going for the set up where my HD is plugged into the Gigabyte Sata II port and DVDRW is plugged in the IDE port. Previously I tried DVDRW in IDE and HD in ICH8 and ran AHCI. But that cause me to lose the DVDRW drive in Windows (documented by other people as well).

Thanks for the help

FYI, I just edited my previous post to add more information, which I think covers this. Anyway, I don't think you need to reinstall windows, just update the driver to the latest JMicron version (I think it's up to 1.17.something). I found the Gigabyte version to be pretty crappy, but I've been having all sorts of problems with the SATA ports on my system (which I don't think are related to the driver), so I can't say for sure.

Thanks Metaluna... I'll give this a try. Hopefully I wont see the stupid blue screen or have my DVDRW disappear on me.

Either Gigabyte is too busy working on their newer versions of this board to care about this, or there's been some really messed complaints about the new BIOS... One way or the other, we're screwed...

Update on my Jmicron issue: I installed driver as per Metaluna's instruction. My drives are still on the ICH8 ports and I set the mode to AHCI. After couple of restarts, the system is fully functional! Computer sees my DVD RW and presumably, the HD is running in AHCI mode. THANKS METALUNA!!

How do I check what mode of IDE/SATA my drives (DVDRW and HD) are in? Is there anyway to tell whether i'm operating in AHCI mode or to tell what my DVDRW's mode is?

If your hard drive is plugged into the ich8, it is not running ahci. You do have a ds3, right?
The ICH8 does not do AHCI. Only the GB sata II controller (jmicron) can do ahci.

We talked about this before didn't we?

Yes ... I was going to do the gigabyte port thing... but the computer refused to boot last time (actually messed up my windows too)
How do I know what mode i'm in?

If you are connected to the ICH8 and your board is a DS3, you only get one mode. IDE.

Go read the intel spec on the ICH8 and you will understand.

I just moved it to Gigabyte port and it seems to be working! How do I know if I have it working in AHCI mode now? Thanks Hawk!

Actually I just opened the device manager and now it says Sata drive for my HD. Interesting...

Did you load the F6 drivers when you installed windows? If the answer is no, you dont get ahci, you only get Native Sata. I believe that I am 99.9% sure on that answer.

GO to device manager and change the view to by connection and look at the controller above that drive and you should see the mode.

Edit All of this is assuming you are plugged into the GB Sata II.

It's under Jmicron controller. says SATA WDC... . I don't really care about AHCI per se... Native SATA mode sounds good enough to me

I been running my setup in IDE mode but thanks to all the tips provided I went ahead and update the JMICRON drivers for both XP Pro & Vista Ult RC2. So now I'm officially running my SATA drives in AHCI mode.

FYI, Vista RC2 asked me to reactivate Windows due to "change in hardware." So changing drivers is considered change in hardware. :disgust:

Earlier this evening I tried a different application, Core Temp, to read my 6600 processor. It was in the 70s which was more than double what I had been seeing with Speed Fan. I finally took the side cover off and realized that the heatsink fan wasn't even spinning. After hitting the blades a few times it started up and the temp dropped immediately to the mid 40s. This is the stock fan that Intel provides.

I have noticed that it often does not start up when the rest of the system does. And it is always changing speed and often completely stopping for a few seconds. In the last minute or so it has stopped and started 5 times. Is this something the MB is controlling or does it come from the processor? Or is it even normal? It also makes an occasional sound like a distant yelp of some animal. A few days ago I thought it was an animal and went outside to listen.

I entered BIOS PC Health Status and changed the CPU Warning Temp from disabled (default) to 60, enabled the CPU Fan fail warning, and set the Fan Spped Control Method from Auto (default) to Legacy.

So, is this all normal or do I have a bad fan or bad MB? Amd if it is normal then why did the fan stay off and let the temp go so high? Thanks.

Sounds like you have the "Smart Fan" thing enabled. I would suggest turning it off entirely.

I don't like fan monitoring software... I want my fans running at full blast all the time. If they are too noisy I replace them with quieter fans.

Good luck.

This happened to me as well, on Auto the fan would sometimes stop spinning and the temps would soar to the 70's. I put it on Legacy and problem solved.

I"m sorry.....but I have to laugh.......one of the issues that I repoerted to GB about 10 days ago was the problems with fan control. They told me it was most certainly a user error and they could not recreate the problem.

What I would do, is disable fan control in the bios completely. At least then you know your cpu fan will be running at 100% percent all of the time.

Then if you want to install speedfan and TRY to control the cpu fan, you can do that.

If you want to mess with easytune, you can adjust those temps that it turns off and on at. I'm not sure how good it will work but you can try it. I wasn't happy with the way mine worked either.
