I just reverted back to the F7 bios. Overall it has been far more "responsive" than F8 on reboots. I lose my soundcard maybe once every 7 reboots. I guess that's still better a lot better than having a guaranteed problem on every cold boot...

Currently running Orthos @ 456 FSB

StopSign, you have the same setup as me... are you using active cooling for your northbridge? Also, did you try F8 and F9?

No I'm using the stock NB heatsink. It gets pretty hot but seems to be stable. Right now I have the NB at stock voltage and running Orthos. I think I was stable at 465 FSB with the NB at stock voltage but I'm running lower now to see if I can decrease the Vcore. I'd rather run slightly slower with less heat.

I've tried all of F7, F8 and F9. F8 and F9 both have cold boot problems whereas F7 doesn't.

Thanks for your reply. Gigabyte did get back to me. I wrote asking for the differences between revision 1 and revision 2 when overclocking the GA-965P-DS3

I was told that when overclocking I am on my own. Concerning the differences between the boards:
They are both the same board just revision 2 uses an different audio chip then rev 1.0

If it's just this board, then I'll get the p5B Deluxe and be done with this board. That board seems pretty nice and you don't lose your OC every time your PC cools down. If I need new ram, someone tell me what to get (in the sub-$250 range)

I second this... from what I read though it seems getting D9 is like flipping a coin... but maybe there is something good in the sub $250 range. Anyone? Are Firestix D9?

I currently have a 74GB WD Raptor, a 250GB 7200.8 Seagate and a 320GB 7200.10 drive. Would I get better performance from the Seagate drives if I put them on the Gigabyte controller (the green SATA ports) and ran them in AHCI mode, non-RAID? Or should I just leave them on Intel controller and set "SATA Port0-3 Native Mode" to enable in the BIOS?

The new BIOSes seem to improve the situation, but my board is hitting a wall with my Micron D9s in the 480 FSB range (the CPU and memory have headroom to spare). I heard rumors of a mod that would replace one of the resistors on the board for increased D9 compatibility. Can anyone point me in that direction? A google search came up empty.

jeez, at what point do you consider a different mobo?
Um... I guess when I decide I'm unhappy with my current one? What sort of a dumb question is that? I enjoy modding hardware because of the satisfaction I get from a cheap performance increase. Jeez, what nerve!

Anyway, this guy on XS seems to know a lot about the issue, but apparently he's under NDA or something:

I guess nobody knows anything about this mod.

I'm reading that thread now. Interesting. I'm going to buy some D9's myself. I want revision 2 of the board (now that I know there's a second revision --- oops, too late). I can't return my board or exchange it. Gigabyte claims the only difference between revision 1 & 2 of the board is an audio chip, they did not acknowledge any difference in overclock performance. Anandtech says revision 2 has a different electrical layout for increased performance. I wonder if that resistor issue has anything to do with it.

I'm not big on soldering but I think the easiest route would be what that guy Fiddy suggests and you add a resistor either in parallel or in series depending on whether or not you want to increase or reduce the wattage. If you find anything out PM me if you aren't going to add it to the thread, thanks.

I built a new system with the DS3 last week and it was running fine. I installed Vista beta 2 and that's when the system began randomly turning off. Eventually, it turned off and when I went to turn it on again it began doing the continual turning on for a split second and then turning off loop. I have OCZ S.O.E. RAM but it seemed to work fine before Vista. What do you guys think went wrong here? Should I RMA the motherboard? The problems started after Vista but it doesn't seem like that could have caused this type of problem.

I wouldn't expect to see anything on that resistor mod. That is rather old news and nobody ever came through with the details on it.

what BIOS? if you have anything over F7 there has ben a cold boot issue, go back to F7. If you have F7 then I don't know what to tell you.

I'm not even sure which BIOS. I didn't check when it was working and now I can't check since it won't start.

When it's in that on/off cycle, wait for a bit. Does it keep going or does it stop after a while? If it stops, turn it off and turn it back on. You should now boot with the default clock speed.

...that is assuming you are having the boot problem from the F8/F9 bios.

Ok well I had a Vista RC1 problem with another motherboard where the hard drive would randomly shut on and off. It was only after Vista signaled for standby sleep hibernate etc. The power management was totally messed up. It might seem like your computer is turning on/off but maybe it's going into standby? Those Vista betas have been awfully shaky for me with power management.

I haven't used my DS3 board -- no memory for it yet -- so I don't know if Vista has a similar issue with it. Maybe someone else here knows. My advice for now would be to turn off any advanced power management in Vista. Make sure that your power button is actually mapped to power the computer and not put it in standby. Disable standby , hibernate, etc. See if you still have the problem. When I did that , problem solved.

Better idea: Get the latest Vista

Best of luck to you!

Well,

after spending nearly 5 hours on the f9 bios after the recent update on the Anandtech site, what a waste of time. Firstly just to point out I aint no nOOb, I have been a test engineer for Compaq/Hp for over 10 years and worked as a debug tech for 9 years in Compaq. I have been overclocking since the days fo 486's . Oh and recently I worked for Micron in the Engineering Department before they closed it down in East Kilbride

Spent a long time with this new Bios, was able to run my machine stable 24/7 with my new water cooling rig at 7x475 (E6300)@ 1.375volts, with my Geil PC6400 2Gig Kit running at 2.3Volts. MCH Normal and FSB, PCie normal also. Ran great actually until I read the Article saying how good the new F9 bios was, once again I made the mistake of listening to the article, just like when I rushed out and bought the ASUS A8R-MVP motherboard only to find out it was a cabbage.

Well with the F9 Bios I managed to get up to 7x500 and it ran stable for over an hour withe same 1.375volts on my CPU, 2.4volts on my Geil and all the rest normal oh, memory timings were 5-5-5-15, thought I would go for that magical 505Mhz that Anandtech had achieved, well sysytem bombed, would not re-boot and when i eventually managed to get it to re-boot, cleared cmos, using my cmos clearing tool, 2 pieces of wire attached to the jumper as I was so hacked off having to remove my 7900GTX everytime I wanted to access the jumper and manouver it around all the water pipes .

After the re-bbot would not go stable above 440mhz and thats with the watercooling keeping the CPU pretty cool at 28-29 on idel and no more than 40 on full load. Flashed back to F7 and cant get it stable above 450Mhz now, cmon gigabyte get a bios out that we really need Stable and Fast. I just hope that I have not limited my Dram or my CPU now. Tried it with more Volts on the CPU up the 1.5v used by Anandtech but it was worse off using the higher voltage the sweet spot for my CPU seems to be 1.375-1.3825

Anyone else had similar results?

Also, would it be safe to move my hard drive holding my OS from a yellow port to a purple port?

Purple ports are controlled by Jmicron - they provide full SATA300 compatibility and options
like AHCI mode, NCQ, Hot Swap, RAID
Orange ports are controlled by ICH8 - they run in IDE Mode thus they dont provide features mentioned above.

Yes - its safe to move HDD with OS from orange to purple if Jmicron runs in IDE mode.
Enter BIOS -> Integrated Peripherals -> Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode to check it.
If you want to benefit from AHCI mode - see page 55 (top). There is info posted by YIRANHU about how to do that
