It looks like my E6400 and Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 (PC 6400, 800mhz) DS3 board system is okay. It could have been a short causing a boot problem, but re-installing everything seems to have worked. I was able to upgrade from the default F3 BIOS to F4 and install windows with it automatically finding my Sata2 drive without having to install drivers.
At this point I'm a happy camper.

Does this sound like a mobo problem? A short? Or a PSU problem?

I have the DS3, still using F1 bios.

I believe that might be common with the 965 chipset. I've used the DS3 as well as an Intel 965 board and both of them did that.

Did they ever stop doing that? What'd you do to fix it?

It's possible that it's glued on there, so be very very careful.

Otherwise, turn the motherboard upside down, then push the white pins out from the bottom. That should unfasten the northbridge heatsink from the motherboard.

I've read that a BIOS update fixes this issue. Update your BIOS.

Hmm, updating to F4 seems to have stopped it, but I have yet to reconnect my sata drives. Now doing memtest with 2x1024 adata vitesta DDR2-533, and only a nvidia 7300LE, a floppy, and DVD-R drive connected to power and mobo. After one pass I'll try connecting a hard drive...

I feel bad because this build is for a friend, and it's been a month since I got the parts and I still don't have it done

Hey,

I have the DS3 + e6400 (F3 BIOS)
with a gig of ddr2800 twin2x (2x512)
a x1900gt
2x400gb seagate barracuda's (raid 0 soon) (on sale at fry's for 129 )
antec neo 430HE PSU.

Now my issue is this, I was having some usb issues for a bit and I thought it was because my PSU was too weak, so I went into my bios which I had originally had over clocked to 2.8(350x8) with basically everything normal except pci-e and some timings and with just a tiny bump in the voltage (I was waiting for my big typhoon to come before I went +3ghz for round the clock stuff). but my USB devices decided to stop booting after I swapped my temp card(7600gs) for the 1900gt. They would work on start up but died when windows booted. So I decided to roll everything back to original that I could and I did, after I did this I figured out that windows was trying to install drivers for all of the devices for god knows what reason so I went back to re OC my bios settings.
now heres the problem
when I attempt to go into bios it just pops up a black screen with a underscore scroll thing blinking in the top left hand corner.. how can I fix this?

Sounds like BIOS somehow is bad...reflash it with the latest one and see what happens.

worked,

I didn't think I'd be able to flash the bios (my first gigabyte board) then I remembered something about that @bios, downloaded f4 flashed it, and my bios are back and so is my 2.8 :].

Push the two plastic pins out from the bottom of the board, then carefully wiggle/pull the heatsink off. It's not glued on -- but the thermal pad is a bit 'sticky' and will keep it attached to the chip.

E6600 L626A073 dual prime stable at 380 x 9 1.45 vcore. F4 seemed to help me a lot as far as stability goes. I also put a HSF from swittech on my N bridge, took the S Bridge off and AS ed it. When I put a Zalman on my GPU, it also moves air over the S bridge heatsink and that dropped the temps on system from 43C to 37C, I may rig up a 40mm to blow directly on it. CPU temps are 30C idle and <50C dual prime on water on CPU.

Biggest thing I have found playing with this setup is to take things very slowly. Small steps of 5 MHZ on the freq and small steps of .1 volts on the vcore when needed. Try to push anything too fast and it balks and crashes.

Hey, I'm thinking of getting this motherboard, an E6300 and an X1900GT. Can anyone tell me if that's easily doable on a 400W PSU? I'll be running two IDE HDDs, an SATA drive and a DVD drive. Sorry if this isn't the right section, I was just wondering what wattage PSU I should order with this board.

400w is pushing it for so many drives and a big video card.

Really hot deal right now on this nice 600W: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications...dpNo=1273340&sku=ULT31847&srccode=nvda

You could use this wattage calculator: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp

I really appreciate that, and it is a great price but I'm in the UK so unless they ship I'm stuck with our extortionate rates.

Do you think 500W would be enough? Incidentally, on topic, if overclocking (not by a huge amount, just something to get my money's worth ) would it be worth it to get a northbridge fan or should arranging fans in my case to blow on it be good enough?

Edit: Just noticed your edit for the psu calculator. That really helps, thanks a lot!

I've got something strange happening to me when I try to OC on this board now. Even at a very small OC with my fsb @ 280 this happens. I can run memtest and Orthos fine for a couple of hours, but when I reboot to push the fsb up a little I get the problem.

I hear the fans come on, and the HD light shows activity, but I get no power to my mouse or keyboard, and my monitor gets no signal. I found that I can short cmos and reboot, but I also found that if I shut off the power and wait 10 minutes, it will boot up fine. The only difference is that BIOS has changed my settings back to optimized defaults.

Will it do this if the temps are too high? I'm running the stock HSF right now, and at idle I'm seeing 42-45C in Easy Tune and 55C in CoreTemp. At load I'm seeing 48-52 in Easy Tune and 66-71C in CoreTemp. I know this is pretty high, and I'll be getting another cooler, but I think it's strange that I'm seeing such high temps with such a small OC.

What's your power supply?

Using the F4 final BIOS and an Antec NeoHE 500W PSU. I think I will just go pick up a TT Big Typhoon from Fry's and slap it in there today or tomorrow and hope it drops my temps.

66-71 is way too high. I'm running an E6600 @ 360FSB and my temps are max 52 at full load (Prime).

If the system shuts down like that, it means something isn't able to handle the O/C. I had that happen when I went for 370 and higher.

It sounds like something isn't properly cooled in your case. Are you sure the heatsink on the CPU is on tight and you're using good AS5 or something?

What fan are you running? Memory? CPU?

We need more info.

I have 5 120mm case fans all set to run on high. I haven't tried to reseat the HSF, but I used AS5 and removed the crappy grease that came with it. I also used the AS remover and purifier before applying.

Hey last night I was overclocking my 6400 on the ds3 I had it at 3.6ghz stable and 3.7ghz(unstable) but I wanted to try 3.8 just for the hell of it, After I tried it at 375x8 it booted into windows then gave me a blue screen with a memory dump, when it tried to restart basically nothing happened. The fan thats connected to the power supply directly turns on as does the dvd drive and the hard drive led comes up as well as the power LED, occasionally it will beep before it dies. but basically it tries to boot itself for about 8 seconds then shut down. I tried taking out the cmos batter and Im in the process of reseating everything but I have no idea whats going on.

2. Patriot 2GB (1x 1GB) DDR2-800 PDC22G6400LLK
3. Core 2 Duo E6400

Here's my config:

CPU Clock Ratio: 8X
CPU Host Frequency: 400
PCI Express Freq: Auto
CIA2: Disabled
System Memory Multi: 2.00
CAS Latency time: 5
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay: 5

All voltages are set to NORMAL

Robust Graphics Booster: AUTO

So, the system runs rock solid so far. Been playing lots of Titan's Quest with no problems. CPU seems to hang around 42C when playing, and I'm using the stock cooling fan that came with the retail box.

Couple of questions for you guys:

1. The DIMMs I bought from Newegg claimed to be 4-4-4-12T however, SPD says 5-5-5-12T. System seems to get unstable if I mess with those.

2. What are the other memory settings that the gigabyte bios has set to AUTO by default? Anyone know where I can find out what to set these for my sticks ?

3. Whats Memory Performance Enhance do?

4. What's Robust Graphics Booster do?

Thanks!

I like your post very useful info on your setup. I plan on buying this motherboard and have been looking for a detailed setup such as this.

The board does that if your system isn't stable. You can just short the jumper right above the CMOS battery, or wait a few minutes and see if it will boot up again. But when it does that it's resetting some stuff back to defaults in BIOS, so you have to check them out again.

yeah I waited all night and it still didnt work, I thought I killed it, after reseating everything (i needed to re apply as5 on the cpu neways) it booted up just fine at 3.4ghz, so I'll just lay off of my 4ghz goal for now ;P.
