Awsome, thanks. That gives me hope. Maybe this is still the mobo for me.

I grabbed this from Wikipedia...

Conventional PCI variants

* PCI 2.2 allows for 66 MHz signalling (requires 3.3 volt signalling) (peak transfer rate of 503 MB/s)
* PCI 2.3 permitted use of 3.3 volt and universal keying, but did not support 5 volt keyed add in cards.
* PCI 3.0 is the final official standard of the bus, completely removing 5 volt support.

My PCI Creative Audigy 2 works. Also sil0680 133ATA raid card works. But the blitzz wireless card (PCI) never works on all 3 slots. (the system won't boot with the wireless card installed.)

I notice on Newegg a few posts about the MB being PCI 2.3 compliant and not being able to use old cards.

Anyone have any issues with this?

I am using a audigy on mine without problems.

Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about Mushkin RAM.
I'm looking at getting "Mushkin XP PC2-5300 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-667 CL3-3-3-10 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit" from NCIX.com. It says it does require the 2.1v to run, which worries me, but I still like those sticks.

The other option is the Corsair stuff, "Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-5400C4 2GB 2X1GB PC5400 DDR2-667 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory," which I'm much less worried about.

That being said, which do you think would be better when it comes to OC'ing my CPU?

Got my entire system setup last night. Apparently got everything installed right, or at least i hope, on the first shot as i powered up the comp and it posted. Loaded windows, still in the process of installing all the applications. So far, the board has been very stable and has worked like a champ. The only major problems i ran into were the EMI springs on the io plate and the motherboard. Had to twist them a little to get the board in place. Haven't really done anything major yet but i can confirm that my 2gb of corsair ddr2-667 VS ram is running fine and in dual channel.

Add a 40 $ mail-in rebate to that if you get it from here: NCIX Rebate

Choose the memory from the link bellow: NCIX Sale

That makes it 220 $ Can. Good price.

If I'm looking to OC, is it better to go with the lower speed/latency or the higher speed/latency? Would that make a difference with this board?

Just got the parts for my system from newegg a few days ago, and it's running rock solid at 3.2GHz / 400mhz FSB / 5-5-5-15T PC2-6400

1. Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3
2. Patriot 2GB (1x 1GB) DDR2-800 PDC22G6400LLK
3. Core 2 Duo E6400

Here's my config:

CPU Clock Ratio: 8X
CPU Host Frequency: 400
PCI Express Freq: Auto
CIA2: Disabled
System Memory Multi: 2.00
CAS Latency time: 5
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay: 5
DRAM RAS# Precharge: 5
Precharge delay (tRAS): 15
ACT to ACT Delay: AUTO
Rank Write to Read Delay: AUTO
Write to Precharge Delay: AUTO
Refresh to ACT Delay: 0
Read to Prechage Delay: 0
Memory performance enhance: NORMAL

All voltages are set to NORMAL

Robust Graphics Booster: AUTO

So, the system runs rock solid so far. Been playing lots of Titan's Quest with no problems. CPU seems to hang around 42C when playing, and I'm using the stock cooling fan that came with the retail box.

Couple of questions for you guys:

1. The DIMMs I bought from Newegg claimed to be 4-4-4-12T however, SPD says 5-5-5-12T. System seems to get unstable if I mess with those.

2. What are the other memory settings that the gigabyte bios has set to AUTO by default? Anyone know where I can find out what to set these for my sticks ?

3. Whats Memory Performance Enhance do?

4. What's Robust Graphics Booster do?

Thanks!

That's a bummer.....so if you want to run at 450fsb you need DDR2-900 at minimum?

how many DDR2-667 sticks can overlock to 850-900 mhz? or even DD2-800 sticks?

Yes. 1:1 you will need RAM that can run 900. Most 800 modules will, perhaps with looser timings or a slight voltage increase.

Can't say how many 667 will do 850-900. I have a lot of cheap 533 that will do 667 with extra volts but I don't know on the 667.

When AT did a value RAM roundup, all their value 667mhz modules hit DDR2-800 with relaxed timings. However, you're probably going to have a problem hitting DDR2-900 with said value RAM, unless you have a real good pair of sticks.

you'd have to raise your memory voltage to get those fancy timings.. i guess your memory is rated at 2.0v and the board default is 1.8v??

How do I know how much to raise the voltage? Is there a util that will tell me what voltage my DIMMs are currently at? Cpu-z doesnt seem to, and I can't find anything in the BIOS about that.

The DIMM setting in the DS3 bios is incremental, not an exact value, so I would need to know how much to bump it??

So assuming I read this thread correctly, these boards (both the S3 and the DS3) are very picky about both 1) memory voltage, and 2) manufacturer/brand of RAM.

All I've managed to determine based on reading is that Corsair Micro's DDR2-800 (PC6400) stuff, which runs at V1.9, works the majority of the time (one poster said he had issues, everyone else none).

Has anyone compiled a list of what RAM works and what doesn't? This would be quite benefitial.

Just purchased my G965-DS3 and Conroe E6600, plus SataII Seagate.

Question is how do I know I have Sata II enabled, does it do it as a default? Do I need to ensure I am plugged into the right sata plug on motherboard. Any suggestions or thoughts.

Additionally is there software I can run to verify I am running at sata 2 or otherwise.

Regards

Since stock for the board is 1.8v i'm assuming a +0.2 will get you to 2.0v .. check the data on your memory modules to find out exactly what voltage they require..

My DS3 board is emitting a very high-frequency noise during operation. This problem has also been mentioned over at XtremeSystems, with regard to both this board and the DQ6. I'm not overclocking; this occurs at stock settings.

The noise seems to be coming from the L16 inductor below the DIMM sockets (or thereabouts). Depending on what the computer is doing, the noise sometimes changes in pitch and intensity, but it is always present. On top of the pure tone that I hear, a lower-frequency "chattering" noise can sometimes be heard when the computer is under stress.

I find it extremely annoying to the point that I cannot use the computer, although others that I've demonstrated it to can barely hear it, indicating that it may be beyond the threshold of hearing for some (I'm under 25 and can hear high-frequency noises quite clearly).

I have tried lowering the CPU voltage, disabling features such as C1E and the like, and covering the inductor coils, but nothing has helped. I sent a message to Gigabyte but haven't received a reply yet. I'm hoping that I just received a bad sample, but perhaps they all have this problem and few have reported it. Is anyone else experiencing this problem with their DS3?

Thanks for the suggestion. This is the exact memory I purchased. According to the PDF, it's 2.2V.

Assuming the Gigabyte board supplys v1.8 by default, i would need to bump DIMM voltage by +0.4v. Ok, I tried up to 0.3 with no success, so I'll try 0.4 tonight and see if I can get it to use 4-4-4-12T

I've seen this too. my DFI SLI-D does the same thing. It's been solid though for a long time.

Haven't noticed any high-frequency whine from my DS3. It's possible that it might be beyond my hearing range, but I doubt it. Although I'm over 30, I can hear plenty of things that others my age can't. Including that d**n annoying high-pitched "Mosquito" ringtone!

I use to have cold boot problems with my DS3. I had my X-Fi XtremeMusic in the bottom PCI slot. I moved it to the PCI slot bellow my Ati X1900XTX and the cold boot problem went away. This is just an FYI for those with Creative Labs sound cards.

Hi All,
I ordered the E6400 and Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 (PC 6400, 800mhz) to go in my DS3 board. I got everything together and can't post a beep or get anything coming from the video card. I am not that informed, but it seems most have had good luck with the memory I ordered in this board, so should I expect my board is DOA? I tried using each of the memory sticks individually in each slot with no luck. I don't know if I should RMA the board or the memory to Newegg, or maybe find a cheap stick of memory locally to see if it will post that way and hopefully let me upgrade the BIOS.

Any advice on where I should go from here would be appreciated. Thanks

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but would applying Arctic Silver 5 to the northbridge do anything? Shoot...how exactly do you take the northbridge off in the first place for this board?

Has anyone else had a problem where the system powers on for a second or two, then powers down for 3-4 seconds, then finally powers on again and stays on?

Does this sound like a mobo problem? A short? Or a PSU problem?

I have the DS3, still using F1 bios.

I believe that might be common with the 965 chipset. I've used the DS3 as well as an Intel 965 board and both of them did that.
