I guess my worry is that it's something bad. In order for me to restart the computer when it gets stuck in the bios I have to turn the power supply off, a simple restart won't work.

Newegg is out of stock on the $180 Patriot 2GB DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) kit. Any suggestions for the next best thing?

Please post updates of your o/c with the F6 bios!

I've still got f4, I'll be updating to f6 tonight and I'm hoping for it to fix a few of the issues I've been having (one of those being unstable overclocks).

Please let us know if your F6 bios has improved o/c, or anything else for that matter..

D/L F6 here

why is it that the Gigabyte site doesn't have F6 on it?

I started @Bios and let it search the Net and the USA Gigabyte site and it came back with F5..

ok it's on the Taiwanese site only.. not on the USA site yet.. I'll wait for it to arrive there.. just feel a little comfortable pulling it from a USA server through @BIOS

E6600 2.4GHz CPU @ 4MB L2 Cache/Stock Cooler
2x1 GB DDR2 667MHz Kingston RAM
Graphics card MSI 7600GT

Thnks for the inputs guys

Hi Guys,
Just joined the forum. Great reading, but lots of it is foreign to me. Try to understand as much as I can. I have the following setup
E6300
GA-965P-DS3 F6
2x1GB DDR2 667 Patriot Ram
320GB SATA-2 Drive
256mb EVGA 7600GS Video PCIE
Arctic 7 Pro Cooler for CPU and Arctic Cooler Exhaust fan and instake fan

Have successfully overclocked so far at 7x400MHZ to 2.8GHz boosting only RAM voltage up by .+1 and FSB to .+1. So far running Ortheos and seems okay. Set timings to 5-5-5-15 from 4-4-4-12 as the original timings seems to fail quickly. With 5-5-5-15, things seem okay for now. Because I don't understand memory timings and such. I was wondering if somebody had the same combination of cpu, mb, ram, what type of oc they were getting and what their setting were for the mb. Do I need to worry about getting chipset coolers? I would like to oc to about 3GHZ or 3.2 without extra cooling if possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good sharing of information on this forum

thanks
Phil

Anyone running this Mobo and Crucial ballistix pc-6400 ddrs 2x1gb memory?

I ask since I may now get the G965-DS3 board, the one with the on board video. I know this board is lsightly different, but since not many G owners out there, figure I'd start here.

I've reviewed the posts and one person asked about compatability, one responded and said should be fine, but no one answered fer sure and no one seems to have crucial in the signature.

Any assurances appreciated.

A follow-up on the issue I was having:

* Moved Audigy 2 ZS to last PCI slot (furthest away from PCI-e)
* Dropped hardware acceleration slider in Windows down 1 notch (Full --> Standard)

Adjusting these settings solved my problem for sure (I've had a fully stable system for almost 2 weeks). The hardware slider in Windows had NOTHING to do with the problem (I've since put it back to Full), nor did the PCI slot.

A co-worker of mine was discussing his AMD's "Cool&Quiet" feature, and we compared thermals (Opteron vs. Core2Duo). He was baffled by why my core temperature was around 50-51C, and the fact that FID was not fluxuating, thus increasing my overall system temperature. I pointed out the BIOS options I had disabled, which ultimately led to me re-enabling some of them to see what I could figure out.

For about 10 hours, I ran with these settings, and let RMClock run in the background.

* BIOS: Enabled: CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)
* BIOS: Enabled: CPU Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2)
* BIOS: Disabled: CPU EIST Function
* BIOS: Disabled: Virtualization Technology

The result in RMClock was a FID that would fluxuate between 6x and 9x (thus changing the core clock between 1600MHz and 2400MHz). VID remained locked at 1.325V. Core temperature (when NOT in games) was around 46C, and when in games, around 51C. System temperature (now that I have my case closed) was around 37C, CPU temperature was around 34C.

About 10 minutes ago, my system hard-locked (no mouse response, etc...) -- but only while I was playing FFXI. (Goes back to my original post, where my system would only crash in WoW or FFXI or other intensive games).

I'm now trying these settings:

* BIOS: Enabled: CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)
* BIOS: Disabled: CPU Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2)
* BIOS: Disabled: CPU EIST Function
* BIOS: Disabled: Virtualization Technology

Same thing as above (VID remains locked at 1.325V, but FID fluxuates). Temperatures are the same too.

We shall see. I'm left thinking the C1E feature is what's causing the pain...

Has anyone else played with these CPU features, and if so, have they had system instability?

The F6 BIOS improved my OC. Before on the F5 BIOS, I was unable to get my E6300 to run Orthos for even more than half an hour or so at 3.15 GHz before it would freeze at voltages up to 1.4v.

With the F6 BIOS I ran Orthos overnight at 3.15 GHz with a 1.3875v, and I'm now testing it with 1.35v and it seems stable so far.

As I got a lot of info from this thread, I thought that I'll also post my OC results..

During the weekend I assembled my
E6300
Gigabyte DS3
2x512MB Geil CL4 800MHz RAM
250GB Seagate 7200.10 SATA2
Scythe Katana 775
S3 1MB PCI graphics (yeah, still waiting for my Radeon X1900GT )

So far it seems it runs stable at 7x450=3.15GHz, with NO overvoltage. Only RAM is set to 2.1V, which is the voltage recommended by Geil. The memory runs on 5-5-5-15, btw.
The temperature under load is (reported by speedfan) 61C CPU/39C system. Coretemp shows around 65C.

I'm really pleased with this, will be a nice replacement for my Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz

The F6 bios changed my Normal overclocking settings to Auto.. all of a sudden my CPU was getting 1.44v instead of the 1.325 volts I'd set it to!! I guess the new bios detects my mild overclock (333 MHz) and thinks the CPU needs more volts.. when it doesn't.. in fact i was even planning to undervolt at this overclock but since the temps seem ok right now (39/40) I decided to see if I can push the system further at stock volts.

The thing is I don't have the motivation. Everything is fast and just right speedwise, coming from a PIII 1GHz .. only place where I'm still pulling the same timings vs my old computer.. damn XP bootups.. still take 40 sec from start of bios to where the hourglass vanishes from the desktop.. I think it's very slow. but I can't seem to tweak the times down.. have tried everything..

Ok.. so who has SATA Port 0-3 Native Mode Disabled/Enabled figured out?

Does this apply to the Gigabyte Controller or the ICH8 controller?

I don't have my home computer in front of me so this is from memory.

In the BIOS there are two different SATA options. One referring to SATA ports 0-3 and the other (below it i think) referring to SATA ports 4-5. I'm pretty sure that the bottom one mentions that it is the gigabyte SATA controller.

On my system I only have one HD and have ti hooked up to SATA 0, which I believe is the ICH8 controller, and I have the Gigabyte controller disabled in the BIOS.

If no-one's confirmed this by the time I get home i'll post back and let you know if that was right.

I believe it's for ICH8.

The options few lines below for AHCI/IDE/IDE-RAID mode are for Gigabyte I think..
