I think it's a 320...if not, it's 300 then.

New bios? Meaning the F7 bios? Yeah, it's out and life is good. I know that some people are having "issues" like "I used to be able to get 500FSB now I can only get 495!" but those aren't really issues, IMO.

Well I tried to go back to F5 bios from F7, and it didn't seem to have any effect on overclock except it was harder to get to book under F5. So I am now back to F7.

I'm a n00b to overclocking and I'm trying to be as cautious as I can. Also, this is my first on these forums. Hi everyone

The bios on this board already has a built in function where you set the upper limit of the core temperature. Though I haven't tested it out myself so I can't say for absolutely certainty how well it works. Besides I don't want to run my CPU too hot to find out.

Anyways, i'm hoping to build my first computer in the near future. I fairly tech-savvy and i'm taching a computer tech class right now so the actual building and most of the component selection shouldn't be much of a problem. I'll probably not overclock initially but i want to leave that option for later. The P965-DS3 has been reccomended to me on a few occasions. My question is, is this a decent board for an overclocking noobie? I don't need insane speeds or anything just ease of use and hopefully reliability.

Right now the P965-DS3 is considered the best for overclockability/price ratio. This is my first overclocked board and given the amount of resources on AT and other forums I found it realitively easy to work with.

I think the onboard sound is pretty darn good. Even supports EAX2.0. I don't have to deal with Creative's "Still Crappy After All These Years" drivers for my Audigy anymore.

Anyway, I have a minor issue. After flashing to the F7 bios, my videocard's fan (7900GTO) runs at full speed all the time. My board came with the F4 bios, and the fan barely spun while the PC was idle/surfing, and sped up a little when gaming. Temps on the card were just fine.

After the flash to F7, the videocard fan spins at top speed all the time. Is this a known issue? I am having NO problems with video/gaming at all.

BUILD STUFF:

Its in the intel UD but for your easy reading:

NEW BUILD WITH SOME OVER CLOCKING

So its that time of the year again to build another computer. With all the Hype over the Core 2 Duo it was time to do a little investigation of my own.

I started the build with one thing in mind, CHEAP.

Bought a factory sealed 6300 on ebay For $168 with shipping . A Gigabyte DS3 from Outpost for about 132 with shipping.

The killer expense which is DDR2. You tell me these suppliers don?t have collusion? I struggled with this because of rumblings on the net about memory problems. Turns out the older bios had problems with higher DDR volts for startup. I believe this is cured after f4 bios.

So I picked Gskill 2 x 1g 6400 DDR2 800. Green heat shields. Cost about $260 delivered from Newegg. Wanted to get faster stuff but $300 or more for faster memory is insane in my book.

Bought an Alpine 7 from Arctic Cooling with Arctic Silver 5. $27.00 From Xoxide.

So total build using old stuff:

168.00
132.00
260.00
27.00
____
$564.00

Pretty expensive for a little upgrade but I love hardware and Ocing so I went for it.

Over the next two days thinking about it and reading about the problems with the board I decided not to pull my old rig apart and ordered the rest of the stuff to finish the build.

XCLIO 3060BK Black/Silver $45.00
Liked the side fan for cooling, cheap.

eVGA 256-P2-N615-TX Geforce 7600GT $132.99
ATI has nothing in this price range

ENERMAX FMA II EG565P-VE ATX12V 535W $99.00
Nice supply, Don?t need SLI. Antec not as good as it once was IMO.

Floppy $7.00
Bios update

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3250620AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb $79.99
Cheap and couldn?t afford a 150 raptor 5 year warranty

LITE-ON Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 5X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache ATAPI/E-IDE DVD Burner With LightScribe
Piece of junk. Failed I hate Light-on

EVERCOOL EC4010 40mm Ball Case Cooling Fan
Cool Northbridge

Windows XP Home

So with my second weakness I?m down:
$595 + $564= $1195.00

Now after all that the Lite-on piece of crap died right away and I replaced that with a Memorex Dual DVD burner with a silver door that matches the case. $39.99.

And thinking some more about cooling and after I read some more about the Alpine 7 I got scared and ran to COMP USA and picked up the Hyper L3 which is doing a sweet job for $32.99

So the Final cost: $1268.00

So Time for some Links on the MB:

Got OC a little better to super pi 19something. I'll have alot more on this latter.

1:1 800 Auto volts, very High CPU Volts!

A Little Faster with me setting Volts.

So I'm still playing with the OC, Don't trust auto volts. No way you need the volts it supplies. After I'm tested stable I'll flesh out the rest. OCing with this board is a dream.

Now is Core 2 Duo a must have? Upgrading from Venince Core or X2? I'd say no. Yes in benchies its really fast. But the feel of it is no different then a nice 3700+ or x2 really IMO.

If you have a 754 or older Pentium I'd say yes. It does increase 3d marks a little. All and all I'm more impressed with this build then the first chaintech VNF4-ultra, which I absolutely loved! Oh BTW this is the next Chaintech! Cheap(For Intel), Fast, Great OCer!

Popping and Crackling Sound from onboard Audio

Has anyone had experience with the onboard audio popping and crackling, particularly during games? This also happens when playing music with MediaPlayer, but to a lesser degree. It's not debilitating, but certainly detracts from the quality of the sound. Right now I've got a 5.1 speaker system plugged in and used the HD Audio setup, and downloaded the latest drivers (1.47) from Realtek... with no improvement. Thanks.

P.S., This board has been a great help. I've used it to help in overclocking an E6300. Great resource -- you guys rock.

PPS, Using the F6 bios if that makes any difference.

What is the complete build?
Did you reload drivers?

Could try version 7 bios although I don't think that will help!

Nothing too special, but here it is...

DS3 board (obviously)
E6300 oc'd to 2.8 ghz (400x7)
2 Gigs of Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800
Sapphire X1900XT 256MG PCIe16
Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Cooler
System Drive is Seagate Barracda 7200.7 (80GB)
Game Drive is WD Caviar SE WD 1600JS (160GB)
and a Sony DVD drive

I could put in my old Audigy X Gamer card (one of the first Audigy's), but I figured the onboard audio would be better given the old card's age.

Edit: In terms of drivers, everything was a fresh install so I hadn't tried it (other than for the onboard audio), but I can do that tonight, sure. I gather it's usually the result of a conflict of some sort (perhaps w/ the graphics card?), so maybe that's worth trying.

P.S., Is there a voltage setting for the onboard audio I might have futzed with that is doing this?

Don't think so.

The motherboard sound is pretty good. Almost as good as the soundstorm boards from years ago!

Still like my Audigy ZS better though.

I love it, my first build, and super fast and so much cheaper than Dell. I tried to customize as close as possible on the Dell website and that build came out to be 2400+ (computer alone)

I like that cooler. Kind of big though.

These intel chips seem to run pretty cool and they can run fine warmer then AMD64.

I've read they are pretty much on par with Ninja Scythes and Big Typhoons, just runs the ever bit so slightly warmer than the others.

The Zalman 9500 already barely fits in my case.
