Have any of you used pci cards in this board - and if so what type and had you had any problems? The reason i ask is this board is said to have pci spec 2.3 and i read some where that some people have problems iwth older 2.1 and 2.2 cards...

If I don't find I fix for my PATA IDE card or IDE to SATA adapter that works soon with my NEC 3550A, I feel like I'm going to put my head through a wall.

Hey all, I just got me my 2 sata-IDE adapter and tried them out today, I know some been thinking about them. They are the Rosewill IDE Device to SATA Device Mini Vertical Bridge (for IDE device) Model RC204- Retail ...the verdict? CRAPTASTIC. Both of them failed to show up my BenQ1640 or both my Western Digital drives. I followed the instructions exactlly like they said

I could have told you they weren't going to work. Read reviews at Newegg before you make a purchase, they all said it wouldn't would with the DS3/S3 boards.

The damn boards have sucky JMicron controllers. I can't get my IDE drives to work right yet and I'm 3 weeks into this POS. I really need to fix this thing.

The fact that I can't get the motherboard to even boot with the harddrives on a IDE controller card and ATAPIs off the mobo just mystifies me.

Have you contacted Gigabyte?

I've seen other posts like this but no help

I will now, but I honestly don't think they will be of much help. How can they have a mobo that doesn't work with a SiI 0608 controller!?!? That's the most widely used ones!

They have to do some serious bios updates.

The Bios updates so far have been great for OCing and the 1.8v bug. I'm sure they will correct all in time.

Have you checked extreme & HardOC?

Yes, a million times over. On CDFreaks people list similar problems and nobody seems to have any answers.

When I hook my DVD-Rom drives to my mobo and my IDE HDs to either PATA card it just reboots right after BIOS.

On the Rosewill SiI card it hangs with the ATAPI devices on it. With the Promise Ultra100TX2 it makes it into XP with the ATAPI devices on it (but XP64 will not install), and the NEC-3500A burns at only 2.0x max!!!

The funny thing is with no devices on the Rosewill card it will make it into XP, recognize it and install the drivers just fine.

ARGH!!!!!

I'd gladly ditch my non burner DVD-ROM just for the 3500A if I could find a IDE-SATA converter that woked.

Anyone know of a cpu temperature monitor that works under Vista RC2 with this board.

Running A E6600 at 3.24Ghz with a undersized 1u server heatsink I am testing Seems pretty damn stable. Have some Muskin 667 RAM in there, 4gb of it.

I got my system together yesterday and I am impressed so far. Set-up went smooth and I was really worried about my OCZ memory, but got it to POST first time and updated to BIOS F7. Haven't OC'd yet, but since I am a newb could anyone give some tips on how I should do it? I've been reading this forum and anand's article on the DS3 and overclocking. Changes in BIOs or use this Easytune? I have captures of current cpu-z and memset, but forgot how to add them to my post. Thanks

About the IDE controller, you have 2 choices:

1) If your HDs are plugged into one of ICH8's SATA ports, just change the following BIOS setting:

  • Integrated Peripherals -> Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode -> IDE mode

Reboot and, once again, enter BIOS Setup and open the Standard CMOS Features menu.

Press ENTER to autodetect devices on IDE Channel 4 Master, then change Extended IDE Drive and Access Mode to Auto.

If you have a slave IDE device, do the same on IDE Channel 4 Slave and finally Save & Exit Setup.

At the POST screen, you'll see your IDE devices being detected by the BIOS and the Gigabyte IDE/SATA BIOS will no longer be loaded, resulting in a faster boot.

This is the best way to use DVD/CD drives, because the Main BIOS handles the device detection and you can even choose CD-ROM in the Boot Menu (F12 key).

If you have already installed the JMicron driver, just change the driver to Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller. Now you can see/change the transfer mode of the IDE devices. Just open the properties of the third Primary IDE Channel in Device Manager.

2) If your HDs are plugged into one of Gigabyte's SATA2 ports, just change the following BIOS setting:

  • Integrated Peripherals -> Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode -> AHCI mode

In this mode, the IDE port and the SATA ports are detected as standalone devices, Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller and GIGABYTE GBB36X Controller, respectively.

Now you can see/change the transfer mode of the IDE devices. Just open the properties of the third Primary IDE Channel in Device Manager.

Odd, I know but I thought I'd fool around with my ATAPI devices for the hell of it and I now have them working smoothly off my motherboard simply by changing AUTO to LARGE. That's it. Now my harddrives boot off my Promise controller as well, but the SiI based Rosewill card still hangs (go figure).

The problem is the old Promise card has no XP64 or Vistra drivers so I can't use it as a boot drive, so I have to switch to SATA.

Here's a POSSIBLE quick fix for D9 Memory: Using the F8a BIOS for the DS3, set the Memory Performance Enhance option to TURBO.

I'm using Patriot PC6400 4-4-4-12 memory on my DS3. Do these have the Micron D9 chips?

This board is a freakin' pain in the arse! I finally got Vista 64x RC2 working with all 4 IDE devices.

1. I had to set ATAPI devices for LARGE.
2. I had to disconnect IDE HDs drives from controller card and then Vista will finally install to SATA drive (go figure).
3. Then, afterwards I can reconnect IDE HDs to Rosewill SiI 0680 cards and download latest drivers from Silicon Images website and Vista will recognize them.

Good Stuff Wag.

Hopefully when vista is released retail it will be a little friendlier going. I love this board. Rock solid at 3.00ghz on a 6300 chip. It rocks.
