Thanks for the quick replies. It's nice to know that other people have had the same problem.

The fan froze again this morning and that was after changing the BIOS Fan Spped Contol to Legacy. I've now turned it to Disable so the fan will hopefully just run at full speed all the time. And I changed the Speed Control Mode to Voltage. I can't hear the fan at full speed and it has definitely lowered my temp. Temp Core is reading 29 at idle which is a lot better than 70.

Is it possible to run the CPU fan straight off of the power supply or does it always have to go through the mother board? My case fans certainly have no problem with a direct connection.

You can definitely run your cpu's fan directly off of the power supply... just get something like this.

Like Hardwareking sorta put it... the 965g is really bad.

The P965 is definitely the way to go!

yea I had the G, definitely bad choice! was only able to push a teeny bit out of the fsb and the temps soared for the northbridge. Check my other posts for details...

Anyone else having trouble with silicon images 0680 based pci raid cards? Im having a real bitch of a time with mine :-(

computer will boot with the card in and nothing plugged into the ide ports, but as soon as I plug any devices in the computer starts locking up at the pci device list page!

Different drives, different ports, different pci slots, different pci latencies, different irq assignments and settings, all extras on the board disabled.... all same results!

Computer detects the drives, if I go into the gigabyte bios the drives are available as choices, and can be read with my usb to ide converter fine.... just wont recognize it on my controller. I figured maybe my card cooked and I ordered another one - same issue! First was a generic sil0680 raid card, second was a creative sil0680a raid card. this is putting the majority of my storage unavailable and not making me too happy :-(

*edit for spelling

Whoa, bummer bro.

I'm getting ready to rebuild my system next week with a DS3 Rev.1 and could still return this unopened board and get a Rev2 but I've heard too many issues with the new revision to make it worth messing with. I am only wanting 400FSB stable out of my board and Rev1 is capable of this so I figure why mess around sending back one motherboard that will 99% work for one that is still unproven and even if it's works 100% then still wait a couple more weeks for what? A dead board like you got?

Going with the bird in the hand over here. Good luck to you.

Gonna try taking the sticks of RAM I got here and using them in a PC at work and see if they work (after reading the 1.9V horror stories). The PC at work is the S3 (not the DS3) and it booted up no problem with the GSkill RAM. If they work in the machine at work, I will try the GSkill ones on my PC at home.

Crossing fingers!

Can you tell me where you are hearing bad news about the rev 2 boards already? I'll like to read it.

Ok, update on my situation. I took the Corsair XMS2 (rated at 1.9v) into work and plugged it into the S3 board here. Same thing, power up, power down, over and over. Put the GSkill (1.8v-2.0v) and it runs fine, so I will take 1 stick of GSkill home and see.

ram issues with this board are more problems with stupid people than bad compatibility. They have enacted new anti-stupid recently however
higher voltage ram needs to be booted with a single stick, THEN change the bios, THEN add the second stick.

update on the sil0680/sil0680a based raid controller issue. I managed to get my pc to boot... sorta. the system will still not bypass that screen with sata native mode and ide compatibility enabled.

I turned off native mode and turned it onto raid/ide mode. System will boot with 2 of the hard drives connected to 1 channel of the controller, but it wont boot with the other 2 hard drives I have which are setup in raid. if I delete the raid and try to boot the pc with either of the 2 connected I still cant get it to boot. Swapped the cable but it didnt make a difference. Bios still sees the drives on the controller card and identifies them correctly.

I also cannot see any of my optical ide drives in windows! They are listed as detected with the raid/ide boot screen but not seen in windows as existing. Also when booting as raid/ide I look in device manager and see 2 gigabyte gbb36x controllers listed - one of them says that the device cannot start. When booting in IDE mode I dont see this problem. I will troubleshoot this more later tonight...

Is there some sort of limitation that only 1 IDE channel may concurrently exist?

Since I couldnt boot with IDE mode, and I cant see my opticals when in RAID/IDE mode... maybe its safe to say the motherboard only likes one IDE source?

Seems that when I play with the irqs that everything seems to try to share them. I do notice that the jmicro controller seems to be sahring the irq with the silicon images controller no matter what I set it to... Maybe thats the problem?

Brainstorming...

What version of the bios is your board?

the gigabyte is running on f7. The sil0680 and the sil0680a controllers are both on different bios versions, I'll post up later tonight when I get them which specific version each has.

If I were you, I would contact GB and let them know that the board that they think is so perfect, once again .....IS NOT!!!

Sorry I just have nothing good to say after the up close and personal experience I had with GB support.

Sorry for yet another RAM post, but my E6300 and DS3 are already ordered and I need to make a decision today or tomorrow. As far as overclocking I'd be pretty happy with ~3ghz, and I'll be starting with the stock HSF to see how far it gets me.

From reading recent Newegg comments, it looks like the DS3 boards are currently shipping with at least the F6 bios and potentially the F7, so I need some 6400 sticks that:

a) play well with F6 or later, including a clean initial boot
b) will get me to ~3ghz (or higher) as mentioned above
c) are stable/reliable (naturally)

Do I need CAS4 for what I'm trying to do? I've read that it's the best timing choice for this CPU, in which case my options are these (I'm starting out with 512x2):

Newegg link - Patriot eXtreme Performance, PDC21G6400LLK, $125 after rebate/shipping
Newegg link - Corsair XMS2, TWIN2X1024-6400C4, $152 with free shipping
Newegg link - Kingston HyperX, KHX6400D2LLK2/1GN, $154 after shipping
Newegg link - PNY Verto, D21GX64GMR, $160 after shipping
Newegg link - G.SKILL, F2-6400PHU2-1GBHZ, $160 after shipping
Newegg link - Crucial Ballistix, BL2KIT6464AA804, $165 after shipping

I've been doing some research, but the model numbers always seem to be a little different than the ones I'm looking to buy. Is the Corsair worth $32 more than the Patriot? Is the Crucial worth $40 more? I don't need top of the line, just something to get the job done.

Thanks for any insight.

Just got my DS3 up and running after my Memory run-in. I used some Corsair XMS2 almost like TreeFrog has in his link, except my part number didn't have the C4 in it, meaning mine wasn't ECC. I am now awaiting my shipment of Crucial Ballistic.

This GSkill below will work in both the DS3 Rev 2 and the S3.

BTW, my board is DS3 Rev 2.0 and came with the F7 bios.

I have a new DS3 on the way sometime in the next week from newegg. Would it be really hard for you to snap some up close pictures ? I'm curious what I'll be getting.

The F8J Bios killed mine and it was clear that GB was going to take about 6 weeks to replace it, so I rma'd it to newegg. I should have the replacement by the end of next week or a little later with the holiday delays. So I'm thinking new egg will ship me a rev 2.

I've seen people saying they have them, but really no confirmations of where they got them and what looks different. I've seen the pics on the website, but I'd like to see up close.

Well I hope you get one. It looks real nice. Crossfire and the D9 bug fixed seems like a winner.

Oh yea ICH8R.

You have to let us know if the intel raid 0 performs better then the jmicron. I'm not blow away by the jmicron in raid 0.

I actually considered returning my second drive I just got because I think one drive felt faster for most stuff but I'll keep it til next windows reload.
