just noticed your sig kamyk, your walking a pretty ragged edge with that PS even @ stock clock...

What is the total amperage on the 12V line with his power supply?

I have been browsing around this forum today looking for some answers to a problem I am having with my new system. First off if this is the wrong place I appologize. Here is my current setup:
-Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
-Gigabyte 965P-DS3 (duh, haha) Revision 2, F7 BIOS
-2 gigs G-Skill PK ram
-Hipro 600w PS
-PNY 7900gs
-250gig Seagate HD
-250gig Western Digital HD
-Lite On DVD-RW

I put this together last week and was having a few minor issues. The first one being once and awhile the system resources would sit at 38-42% and in the processes it would show nothing using that 40 or so %. At this point nothing new would open and I couldnt close anythign that was currently running. I kinda let that go for the time being, then recently I was playing a game and it randomly restarted on me, and it has done that a few times, well I found out I had to manually change the RAM timings from 5-5-5-15 to 4-4-4-12 so I did that and so far so good (we'll see though I just found that out today). Also today I was wanted to play around with a little overclocking (never had done any overclocking before, just read about it). My multiplier is on 9 and it was on the default FSB of 266. I tried 280 just to see if it saved and it worked. So I said i would try 300 and leave it there. Well when I did that it wont boot up. It tries to but never runs for more than a couple seconds, eventually it goes back to the default 266. Is there other things I need to change too or what? Sorry for the long post. But any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Is there a single, surefire way to solve the PIO problem with this board?

Tried a few methods posted in this thread, but to no avail. Only using 1 SATA HD.

Try this:

1. Go to Devices Manager
2. Uninstall PIO Device
3. Reboot
4. Let Windows detect new device on startup
5. That should do it (I had similar problem with my DVD - it helped)

Do you mean my PS' output is to low ???

If that doesn't work, here's some stuff you can do:

Case 1: if you plug your SATA HD into one of the 4 intel SATA ports, then in your BIOS set IDE mode to IDE (NOT AHCI) and everything should work.

Case 2 (I prefer this if it works):
1. goto www.jmicron.com and go to their driver download FTP site. There you will be able to find the latest JM363 driver. Install that... (Do this BEFORE everything else)
2. Plug your SATA HD into one of the two Gigabyte SATA Ports.
3. Go into your BIOS and set the IDE mode to native, SATA mode to AHCI (lol make sure your gigabyte sata ports are enabled)
4. Reboot... Now your CD drive will be supported by the JMICRON IDE driver and your HD will be supported by the JMICRON SATA driver.

When I did case 2, (you must use newer drivers - gigabyte.com has some pretty new ones as well), my harddrive no longer appears under IDE ports and is now called SATA HD!! I did hdtach benchmark and everything seem to indicate normal SATA operation.

Well, you can't just throw away a perfectly good power supply. If you have the Chieftec GPS-450AA-101A you could almost power both of our systems.

Check the following:
1. make sure your PCI express is locked at 100 MHz not AUTO
2. make sure your memory multiplier is locked at 2 not AUTO

2 is most likely where your issue is considering it worked at 280. The issue is that AUTO on memory multiplier implies a 3 multiplier: i.e. if your FSB is 266, your memory is 800. 280 on FSB means about 840 on memory, which your memory is probably capable of handling. But 300 would be 900 MHz, which is probably over your threshold. By using a multiplier of 2, you are getting 2*FSB for your memory speed. So this way you can safely increase your FSB (at least to 400 because your memory can handle that) to test stability of the CPU without getting constricted by memory.

Awesome thanks for the help, I will try that out later.

Also When should I start worring about adjusting voltages? right now I have my RAM at +.2v and everything else on normal.

Is there a FAQ or overclock guide for the DS3? This thread is getting so long, it is diffcult to find information.

I just put together a system with a DS3, and wonder what is a good SW to monitor temperture? I tried coretemp but its readings are diff a lot from Gigabyte's ETC.
TIA

Core temperature monitors the temperatures in each core. That's closer to the heat generating elements of the processor than the sensor used by Gigabyte's ETC. So core temp will generally show a temperature about 10C above Gigabyte's reading. I would trust core temp rather than Gigabyte because that's closer to the actual processor core. I would think that under full load, if you can keep core temp below 60, that's pretty good... Below 55 would be fantastic...

You can also get Everest which show you all of these temperatures (core temps plus mobo's cpu temp sensor plus system temperatures)

I just built a system with the DS3 today and reached 480x7 with the F7 bios. Sometimes my X-Fi would disappear so I flashed to F8 just now. Hopefully I can still retain that 480 FSB...

My 480 FSB failed Orthos in about 10 minutes. Increasing voltage actually made it worse, which is kinda weird. I guess that's my limit then. Now I'm running Orthos at 470 FSB and it has been okay for about 20 minutes now.

I'm getting a feeling that DS3 rev 2 does not have issues with the later versions of the bios. Funny that those were released after version 2 has been released...

I have a Gigabyte 965P-DS3 motherboard. I also have an e6600.

I have revision 1.0 of the board. FYI there is no marking on my box or anywhere else other than the edge of the board that says 'rev 1.0'. I bought the motherboard from ZipZoomFly.com two weeks ago. According to their policy I cannot exchange for any reason, and I can only return w/ 15% restocking fee. I wonder if I'm missing out on anything, because I can't really find out much about revision 2.

Gigabyte's website comparison tool lists the only two differences between the two boards as audio chipset and rev2 is "Vista Premium Ready." And that's it. Yet I read speculation that the revision 2 might be better than revision 1 when it comes to bus speeds and overclocking.

Can anyone give me more information on the different revisions? I already e-mailed Gigabyte but I haven't heard back yet. Thanks.

Also, I have yet to buy memory and I'm quite confused on what to get. I'm told the prices will drop this month so that's another reason I haven't bought anything yet. Is this good:

Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 2GB Kit DDR2-800 XMS2-6400 Xtreme Performance Memory

I have a scythe andy samurai master cooler (I can't fit infinity), and of course I want to overclock high and get the most performance, but I gather by reading about this board that the memory I choose will be very important when doing that. I'm trying to spend only $200; hopefully it will be less if the prices drop.

Thanks everyone

The main difference is that Rev 2 uses solid capacitors which are supposed to improve stability and thus better for overclocking.

If you want an easy way to tell between Rev 1 and 2, look at the NB heatsink. Rev 2 has "GIGABYTE" written on the top while Rev 1 doesn't.

Does anyone else have VCore reporting issues with this board? It may just be the reading, but CPU-Z reports my VCore as 1.26v whereas in the BIOS it is set to 1.3250v. If CPU-Z's reading is accurate it would be nice as I've hit 3.26GHz on my E6300 so far (466FSB). I still think I have some headroom though, but for now I'm content as temps are steady at 48/46 on Core1/2 under full load.

I haven't had any issues with RAM either. Using 2GB G.Skill (the cheapest one on the Egg) and it's running 1:1 DDR2 932 5-5-5-15 @ 2.1v.

I guess it's a good tip, but considering it's written in plain view on the left corner of the board...

What cooling are you using? I get around 51 degrees during Orthos. My bios voltage is the same as yours I think.

A well lapped Thermalright SI-128 paired with a Scythe S-Flex fan (the 67CFM one). Intake and Exhaust are the same fans as well (Exhaust is toned down on the rheobus though, maybe 7v?).

DS3 rev 1.0 also uses solid capacitors. The letter 'D' from DS3 stands for 'durability', while
identical S3 version of this mobo uses normal capacitors.
