Eh? Back at the bottom of page 66 of this thread, you posted a link to a site with the modified driver. Worked for me fine, didn't have to reinstall Windows or anything.

Some users may want to stay with "official Intel" drivers.
Glad to know the modified drivers worked. The person that made the modified drivers seems to have reports that they don't work when installing a fresh WinXP CD install using the F6 from floppy method. Sooner or later, Intel should be releasing "official" AHCI drivers that work correctly on ICH8 chipset boards.

thanks for the info vailr.
So i guess we have to wait for a working driver?

thanks again.
respect.

edit: true, there is a mod. driver. That could do the trick certainly. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm running XP x64 and the only reason I went through the headache of installing the JMicron drivers during the XP Pre-install (the F6 floppy step) was because I heard that only the JMicron properly supports NCQ and the advanced features of SATA.

Is this true? Is the AHCI support what allows the SATA to function optimally? If it is, shouldn't the purple JMicron controller work more efficiently than the orange Intel ones?

I haven't found a way to even check and see if NCQ is enabled on my rig (is there a way on x64). I tried looking around the Intel site but that was a good waste of 2 hours. Anandtech's review of the 965 chipset used some Intel software (can't remember the name off the top of my head) but I could find it on google or on the Intel site.

I'm loving my S3, but Intel's support (and website) is just haphazard. Life was so much easier when I worked with nVidia chipsets haha.

Would it be safe to switch my boot drive (SATA Seagate 7200.10) from the purple to orange controller and check my HDTune results or is that going to mess up the system?

Here is a newbie question, I have a rev 2 DS3 with F7 bios, what does it mean when a voltage goes to a shade of blue instead of green when you up it?

I hear ya, bro. My decision to go with the DS3 is one I would make again... as would be my decision to go with a C2D E6400 and DDR2-800 Corsair RAM.

Running so smooth at 3.2Ghz it should probably be against the law, lol. I am entirely sure I could get more from this system but it already does everything I do really fast and is stable to boot while being faster than the top of the line C2D chip. How can you argue against that? Simple, you can't.

I just had to quote this post, as I have the exact same setup and agree with him 100%. Not to doubt anyone's problems, but careful parts selection (do the research before you buy) and careful assembly/loading are 99% of the battle when building a system. Aside from parts that are DOA out of box, a stable, well-running PC is easily within everyone's reach.

I'm still on the F7 BIOS; maybe will upgrade to F10...maybe not. System is 100% rock stable. I love this motherboard!

I am wondering is there a new GBB36X IDE driver available? Because I just ran theVista test and it said it can;t find a driver that will work with GBB36x.

I really like my Rev 2 F7. I use CIA2 Full Thrust with voltages set manually to "Normal" for my E6600. Idle is 1.6Ghz, moderate load is 2.4Ghz, and full load is a smidge under 3.0Ghz all at stock voltage. memory is 1:1 at 1.9v No bragging rights for an overclock, but I'm the one who pays the electricity bill around here. It is 100% stable with Orthos for days on end. This is a super motherboard and CIA2 is solid when set up properly. Cheers.

Fellas,

I just want to use my IDE optic drivers with raid0 configuration without any problem.
Following steps my by me before and i failed to use my IDE drives properly as they should be.

1)Bios setup: ( v.F10 )
Sata port 0-3 native mode: Disabled
Onboard Sata / Ide device: Enabled
Onboard Sata / Ide Ctrl mode: Raid / Ide

2) Hardware components setup: (Seagate 160gb. Sata II NCQ 7200.9)
a) Sata HDD drives connected to purple ports.
b) Optic Drives connected to IDE port as Master and Slave mode.

3)Windows setup: ( latest Jmicron drivers used )
a) Specify additional drives option selected and raid drivers loaded from floppy.
b) Windows set up finished and rest of the driver setup completed. (Gigabyte Xpress driver cd but i did not load Gigabyte Raid controller. I loaded Jmicron Raid Configurer after Xpress setup).

I had no installation problems during windows setup. Everything worked fine.

Despite of this. I had some issues with my optics after Win setup.

Sometimes my IDE drives cannot recognize randomly selected cd or dvd's properly and i don't know why?

For a clarification... what must i do for a secure and proper setup for using my ide optics with raid0 configuration? How should be my proper bios settings? or what's your advices about this concern?

Is there any driver or bios issue? coz my Mobo is newly returned from dealer and they say there were no problem.

I found the Redhawks message:

- - -

2) If your HDs are plugged into one of Gigabyte's SATA2 ports, just change the following BIOS setting:

Integrated Peripherals -> Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode -> AHCI mode

In this mode, the IDE port and the SATA ports are detected as standalone devices, Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller and GIGABYTE GBB36X Controller, respectively.

Now you can see/change the transfer mode of the IDE devices. Just open the properties of the third Primary IDE Channel in Device Manager.

- - -

He were suggesting for bios AHCI mode instead of Raid / Ide mode in bios.

If i do that... Should i setup the Windows again with ahci driver from floppy (Specify additional device?)

Simply what must i do... Please guys i'm completely helpless.

Thanks in advance,

Hey all.

First of all, I'm slowly working my way through this monster thread, so sorry if my questions have all ready been addressed.

Here's my setup:

C2D 6700 @ Stock
GA-965P-DS3 (F9 BIOS)
TWIN2X2048-6400C4
Radeon x1900XT
2xWD-740GD in RAID 0
1x WD 320G SATA II
1x Lite-On CDR/RW
1x NEC DVDR/RW
Audigy 2
Enermax Liberty 620W

Got my GA-965P-DS3 rev 1.0 about a month ago. Got it, the RAM, and the CPU at the same time. Had some minor stability issues with the system which may/may not be board related. Twice since I've set the system up I've had it hard lock in windows. No mouse/keyboard/BSOD, everything just hangs, the HDD light goes solid, and I have to do a hard restart. No logs are created or anything. This happened once when installing a game during the initial setup and once off a cold boot while browsing the net.

The solid HDD light and the nature of the lockup (hard lock/no logs) seems to indicate to me an HDD issue or possibly an HDD controller issue. One of the Raptors in the RAID 0 is about 2 years newer than the other (both, however are 8MB cache models). I've had my doubts about the new drive for a while now, due to the high pitched whine and some other weird sounds it makes (the old one is silent unless it's reading/writing), and I've already called WD for a replacement.

I'm not 100% that the drive was responsible for the lock-ups, however, and I wanted to check here to see if anyone had had issues like this on this board or maybe had any thoughts on what may have caused the problems.

I'm using the latest 1.14.0.0 SATA II driver off of Gigabyte's site.
I've run HD Tach and a few other HD diagnostic utilities w/ no problems.
Ran 3D Benchmarks/Memtest (12.5 hours) w/ no problems.

Interesting thing in HD Tach-

My access time/read/seek times are all normal. My burst, however is consistently 1800mb/s. On my old system it was 150mb/s w/ this RAID setup.

Also, the manual's documentation on these BIOS features is a bit vague (to me anyway). What do C1E, TM2, and Virtualization do? And should they be disabled/enabled?

Thanks

I've been watching this thread for months, and in December I bit the bullet and built a new rig around the S3 (no D). I've recently started having problems, so time to join up. Let me know if I should post this elsewhere.

Problems:
- previous HDD had the entire boot partition corrupted (tho the data was mostly intact - I recovered the important stuff with a freeware program)
- occasional lockups (several while running installers; others while loading AutoPlay - now off; and a few random) - at least some of the time, the HDD activity light has remained lit just like the poster directly above me
- random noise through my sound card during HDD activity (not all HDD activity, only sometimes)

Current rig:
Case: MozartTX (plenty of room and cooling, temps are good)
Mobo: 965P-S3 (not D)
CPU: E6600
HSF: Scythe Ninja revB, 120mm fan
RAM: 2GB Ballistix
PSU: OCZ GameXtream 700W
Video: eVGA 8800GTX
Audio: SB Audigy 2ZS
Drives: Lite-On DVD-RW connected via IDE; Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA (currently on Intel's SATA controller)
OS: XP Pro, up to date

Nothing is overclocked or overvolted (aside from the USB polling rate kicked up to 500Hz, but I encountered these problems at the default polling rate as well).

Diagnosis so far:
RAM is memtest stable
CPU is Orthos stable
PSU is stable on all rails (tested repeatedly via digital multimeter)

What precipitated all of this was an event maybe a week and a half ago, when I got squealing static through my speakers and my computer rebooted (in the middle of a UT 2k4 game; fyi, I was running my old Radeon X850XT at that point). Everything seemed slower after that crash - bootup took longer, data access seemed slower - but all of my Sandra benches were exactly as expected for my hardware. Weird. I also noticed at that point that I had massive fragmentation on my boot volume (but not my application or data partitions). I went through several defrag cycles and kept a worried eye on the rig, especially as I started having random (but rare) crackling through my speakers and my mic (clanmates could hear it over TeamSpeak even when I couldn't). After a few days I d/led Seagate's HDD diagnostics and ran them on the drive; I know HDD diagnostics aren't really definitive, but I figured something was better than nothing. SeaTools (silly name) found no problems, but then my rig started repeatedly rebooting. (It would POST, run down the IRQ screen, then reboot upon finding no bootable HDD.) Voila, I had no more boot partition.

I ordered a new 320GB 7200.10 - heck, I eventually wanted two anyway - and fired up my old IDE drive to check out the broken install. Partitions 2 and 3 were fine, but the boot partition was unrecognized by Windows; I had to reconstruct some of the directory information with PC Inspector to get any data off. (There wasn't much I needed, since it was just the boot partition, just stuff like my Firefox folder and Gothic 3 savegames.)

So...new HDD arrived on Thursday. I've now had to reinstall Windows to the new one 4 times, due to errors (first with Giga's driver installer, then with Creative's driver installer) that hosed the system. (Some of the errors were repairable, I'm sure, but I figured it was better to just reinstall clean since the install was only an hour or so old anyway.) I actually had to switch to Gigabyte's SATA controller (rather than the Intel SATA controller) just to get the Creative drivers to finally work. Since Sunday morning, when I finally got XP Pro up and running, I've had several (apparently random) freezes, including but not limited to optical drive access.

This is the fourth or fifth rig I've built, and it's the only time I've had continued problems after the initial shake-out period. I guess I had it coming. But my big concern right now is that maybe SeaTools were right and there's nothing wrong with my first HDD; maybe the problem lies with the mobo. Some of the symptoms suggest heat issues, but the HSF and case are both rock-solid; my temps are all fine.

Is there any precedent for such problems on these mobos? (I haven't found anything via Google or searching here, but I'll admit I've only slogged through about half this thread.) Any suggestions on narrowing this down? Something clearly needs to be RMAd, but right now it's tough for me to figure out what.

suibhne, you state that nothing is overvolted. What is your memory voltage set to? ballistix always seems to run better with added voltage.

Alrighty, nothing *except* the memory is overvolted. Sorry. I'd forgotten about that because I just set it to the voltage it wants.

Even so, if it can pass memtest for hours at a particular voltage, it should be good to go...?

I have been having an issue with running my vdimm at +.3v. I can run at +.1 or +.2 but when I go to .3 I will get a BSOD and restart. System runs fine at 3.3 with 1.325vcore and I am just trying to get every last bit out of it. Also, when I change it to +.3, the vdimm in the bios no longer shows to be enterable. By that I mean, when I am at +.2 or less the valvue is yellow and the cursor block(whatever) shows that I am on vdimm. When I change it to +.3 the cursor block goes away as soon as I curser down to that location. Sorry if that is confusing. Best way I can describe it.

Using F7 bios btw, and Corsair XMS6400 2x1GB

Can the DS3 BIOS be used on the S3? I'm at the F8 BIOS for the S3 but getting the cold boot problem. Any thoughts?

Two questions, as I'm still wrestling with this board (S3, which means ICH8 - not R).

1. The installer for the Intel INF (off my Giga CD) repeatedly hosed my Windows install, so I proceeded without the INF update. (I noticed this installer issue documented elsewhere online, so I know I wasn't the only one...) Because of this, Device Manager complains about my SMBus not working. Is there a safe installer online that definitely won't make my system unbootable? Do I even need this update? (Note that the installer worked 100% fine on my previous hard drive, the one that's now unbootable due to boot partition corruption... The only thing I've changed is my videocard, but this time around, on a fresh hard drive, the installer hosed two different Windows installs. Go figure.)

2. Re. working with both IDE and native SATA, I found this info earlier in the thread:

Originally posted by: spinejam

If that doesn't work, here's some stuff you can do:

Case 1: if you plug your SATA HD into one of the 4 intel SATA ports, then in your BIOS set IDE mode to IDE (NOT AHCI) and everything should work.

Case 2 (I prefer this if it works):
1. goto www.jmicron.com and go to their driver download FTP site. There you will be able to find the latest JM363 driver. Install that... (Do this BEFORE everything else)
2. Plug your SATA HD into one of the two Gigabyte SATA Ports.
3. Go into your BIOS and set the IDE mode to native, SATA mode to AHCI (lol make sure your gigabyte sata ports are enabled)
4. Reboot... Now your CD drive will be supported by the JMICRON IDE driver and your HD will be supported by the JMICRON SATA driver.

When I did case 2, (you must use newer drivers - gigabyte.com has some pretty new ones as well), my harddrive no longer appears under IDE ports and is now called SATA HD!! I did hdtach benchmark and everything seem to indicate normal SATA operation.

I followed case 2: it worked great! DVD drive recognized now! Thanks again!

This does not work for me. I installed the JMicron "Standard IDE" driver, which worked fine; if I follow the instructions above, however, and connect my HDD to the Giga ports and switch the onboard SATA to AHCI rather than IDE, the RAID screen pops up after POST (even tho I did not select "RAID/IDE" in BIOS) and I'm hit with a really quick blue screen with text on it (so fast that I can't read anything) before the machine reboots. What the heck?

Yeah, I am running the F7 bios and I'm gonna stick with the F7. "Why fix what ain't broke?" is my motto.

If I was going for a nose-bleed overclock or was gonna do watercooling I might worry about going higher than 400FSB with a different BIOS but right now having 3.2GHz 100% stable on air makes me happy.

Adding my story on the DS3.

Bought the parts from Anandtech overclocking review:
Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13GHz 2MB Shared) - Retail $223
Heatsink - Tuniq Tower 120 $55
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (P965 775) $138
Memory - Super Talent 2x1GB DDR2-800 (T800UX2GC4) $268
Hard Drive - Seagate 320GB SATA 3.0Gbps 7200RPM 16MB (Barracuda 7200.10) $90

Even though you can overclock this system to 3.2+ fairly easily, I wanted to only clock it high enough where I did not have increase any voltages on the system (i.e. leave at default voltage). Honestly do not need the higher end overclocking power for the current games I play, but having the option there down the road if needed for next gen games. For instance the memory is rated for 4-4-3-8 timings at 800 at 2.2V, but wanted to see how far I could go with 4-4-3-8 timings at 1.8V.

Currently running the system at 2.67GHz (E6700 speed) and it is rock solid stable at default voltages (memory, cpu, PCI, MCH, etc). Decided to push it to 3.0GHz and would post and load windows, but when trying to start a game it would reboot. So system can achieve somewhere between 2.67 and 3.0GHz at stock voltages. With the fan turned all the way down to 1000RPM am getting a max of 30C reading off the processor. Guessing when it gets to summertime it will get to 35C.

The only thing I did was to cover the whole Tuniq Tower backplate with electrical tape on the side that comes in contact with the motherboard. Did this because of reading that the metal back plate can potentially cause a short that could make the board unstable.

Was a revision 2 of the board with F10 BIOS I received when I ordered it from NewEgg.
