Also...

I'm planning to get this mobo along with an E4300.
How safe is it to flash the DS3 bios without a UPS (the whole Virtual Dual Bios thing)?
I killed an ASRock bios by getting it interrupted while trying to flash...so I want to know if its safe with the DS3.

I am completely unable to overclock my system. When I increase the BUS speed and try to boot I get a blank screen - no memory beep (or other beep) at all and nothing happens. When I save BIOS and exit screen goes blank and that is it. Have to remove my video card and take out battery. I am really doing something wrong.

75deg C is way too hot. Thermal throttling should be kicking in at that point which is what you don't want.

I'd try the following things if you haven't already:

0. Set the Memory speed from Auto to "2". On Auto it picks some insane divider (only when you manually set the FSB speed) that just won't work. That way your ram will be running in spec.
1. Set PCI-E bus frequency to 100 (default PCI-E speed) instead of Auto
2. Disable USB legacy support and use a ps/2 mouse and keyboard for testing.
3. leave ram and system voltages at auto.

That worked. Did not have to disable legacy. I have the BUS up to 333, memory set to run at 798 with 800 memory in it). I set the PCI Express to 100. Now she boots - so is that setting (100 for the PCI Express slot) what it should be or am I underclocking that ? That seems to have been the hitch?

Temps are still not good. Idle is 37-39, but now at 3 GHz, with TAT under full load it runs 66-67. Tried it at 300 BUS and 2.7 GHz and it is at 65-67 degrees there as well under full load. I turned the smart fan off so CPU fan is running full blast. Also have 120 MM case fan right behind cooler sucking air out.

No voltage upped at all by the way - so now what - that is too hot to run it I assume (even though I doubt it really runs at full load very often does it?)

Quick question. I did a search and didn't find anything here. Is there any way to set memory command rate on this board? I just got it today and don't see any related setting in MIT even after ctrl-f1. Coming from a 650i board, I figured it would be easy to figure out.

The hitch was the memory diver not being 1:1 (200) probably but I dunno it's your hardware. Let the night of a 1000 reboots begin and you'll know what it will and won't do by elimination.

PCI-E should be 100, that's standard.

Temps are still not good. Idle is 37-39, but now at 3 GHz, with TAT under full load it runs 66-67. Tried it at 300 BUS and 2.7 GHz and it is at 65-67 degrees there as well under full load. You could try the Intel stock HSF and see what your temps are like. You could try sanding down the HSF contact surface to make it smoother, or a different thermal compound / amount of it or fiddling with the HSF to make it hold to the CPU more tightly. Keep in mind that 3ghz is faster than anything that Intel sells, even for $1000. You need really good cooling beyond that point with some CPUs. There's a reason the water cooling guys often get the great overclocks. Failing that get a Tuniq Tower seemingly the best air cooler money can buy.

No voltage upped at all by the way - so now what - that is too hot to run it I assume (even though I doubt it really runs at full load very often does it?)

Just keep the cpu multiplier at 9, and keep moving the FSB up 5hz at a time. Until unstability insues. At that point switch over to manual system voltages and up them as far as you dare. More volts should help, but it only made a few hz of difference for me and it wasn't ultimately worth it. Some people get great gains with more voltage though.

It does seem like your CPU is just hot or you cooling just isn't quite what it should be.

The best I can do is 340x9, 8 hours orthos cpu stable.

You can get an idea of what to expect to be able to do here.

EDIT: I figured it out.............finally. I miss the days of the TBred AXP and pretty straight forward overclocking, not that this was hard, just confusing at first glance.

C2D E6300 @ 2.53GHz (could go higher, but i don't really care to)

No I don't think this board lets you set command rate. It just goes with what the SPD wants.

Just got the DS3 rev. 3.3 this weekend and I'm impressed with the board and CPU.

C2D4300@3Ghz (334x9, cpuv@1.33x, TAT didn't crash, OCCT for 5 hrs, Sandra burn in for 8 hrs.) - the cpu from the combo deal at Fry's
Stock HSF- Temps go to 70 with TAT and 60 when running stress test. UPS haven't delivered my Katana Cu yet, hopefully they will today.
DS3 rev. 3.3 (F10 bios, shipped with F9 but had issues with retaining overclock values)
2GB GSkill mem (passed memtest for 5 hrs at OC'ed settings)
250GB SATA hdd
SATA DVD-RW
Corsair 620W PSU
7900GTS (will be replaced with 8800GTS in two weeks)

SOUND question. I plugged my speakers into the green plug and I get sound fine from games and the web and from Windows media files (MPEGS, etc), but when I put a DVD in to play - it plays the DVD and there is NO SOUND WHATSOEVER. I have the Liteon SATA 18x DVD Writer. Why would there be no sound from a DVD in the player?

The post below mine makes me wonder - for my SATA hard drive to work in SATA faster mode - do I need to set teh SATA port to AHCP instead of IDE in the BIOS?

Is this good mobo, especially if we compare this to other affordable mobos?

If not, then what is better?

Without knowing what makes a motherboard "good" in your eyes all I can say as an answer is a simple, "Yeah, sure. You-betcha!".

If you want more details, try googling around for review articles that discuss the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3. There are probably only a couple hundred of them though ... minimum.

No.

I don't know much about "AHCI" but apparantly it's an acronym coined by Intel and refers to support for several SATA "extensions" such as hot-plugging, NCQ and probaly other stuff I don't know anything about. The transfer rate of a CD/DVD drive is limited by the speed at which a CD or DVD can be read. This speed is well below even the minimum SATA burst bandwidth of 150MB/s. Enabling the AHCI extensions is not going to change this at all.

My advice is to just use IDE mode and don't worry about it.

Open the device manager. First make sure that your LiteOn DVD drive shows up under "DVD/CD-ROM drives". Next open the device properties for the drive and check that it has the status "working properly". If all that is fine, then look under the "Properties" tab of the drive's properties. There should a checkbox for "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device". It should be checked.

Hope the above helps as I'm afraid it's all I've got.

Honestly I forgot if it's GTS, GS, GT, GX, GTX or whatever just because I don't care since my target is the 8800GTS model and the B&M didn't have it at the time so I bought what they have and will have it replaced once they get the 8800 in stock. I do hope you're a youngster with time to kill that's why you just had to ask. Otherwise get a life bud

Just some info that could help someone too.

When I simply replaced the NB HS+TIM with an active cooler and white goop and SB TIM with the white goop it seemed to be more stable because it was easier for me to track if the OC will fail.
Also since the fan for the NB cooler that I got was loud I connected it to the CPU fan connector on the MB and have the MB control the fan speed.
A small investment of time that goes a long way.

Im sorta shopping around and doing some research. But, this board it looks like has at least 1 IDE port right? I have 2 dvd ide drives, I was considering buying it but it definitely needs to have an ide port.

Im not sure on my CPU or memory yet but, is this a good stable board for ocing a little?

cold boot! cold boot! still there with rev 3.3 F10 bios. i just bought this board and i must say it overclocks like a beast, the problem is i can't shutdown my computer. if i do, it won't start up. i have to wait for 20 seconds at which point i think something kicks in and the timings are relaxed then i have to go into the bios, change the settings in MIT and everything is peachy until the next shutdown. reboots don't seem to be a problem. funny thing is i can OC to 3.15 EASY with just a slight voltage increase on v-core (1.332 next up from default) and DDR (+0.2). i ordered and received a new Corsair 520W which i plan to install this weekend. i read the Antec Sonata II case's power supply is flaky so I hope that's it.

for those of you who have seen this, what did you do to resolve it short of returning the board?

2. Patriot 2GB (1x 1GB) DDR2-800 PDC22G6400LLK
3. Core 2 Duo E6400

Here's my config:

CPU Clock Ratio: 8X
CPU Host Frequency: 400
PCI Express Freq: Auto
CIA2: Disabled
System Memory Multi: 2.00
CAS Latency time: 5
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay: 5
DRAM RAS# Precharge: 5
Precharge delay (tRAS): 15
ACT to ACT Delay: AUTO
Rank Write to Read Delay: AUTO
Write to Precharge Delay: AUTO
Refresh to ACT Delay: 0
Read to Prechage Delay: 0
Memory performance enhance: NORMAL

All voltages are set to NORMAL

Robust Graphics Booster: AUTO

So, the system runs rock solid so far. Been playing lots of Titan's Quest with no problems. CPU seems to hang around 42C when playing, and I'm using the stock cooling fan that came with the retail box.

Thanks!

My configuration

1. Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3
2. Patriot 2GB (1x 1GB) DDR2-800 PDC22G6400LLK
3. Core 2 Duo E6300

However, I am unable to get pass 300fsb as the system will not boot at all. Odd thing is BEFORE I flashed the BIOS from F1 to F7, from reading some forum discussions, I was able to hit 400fsb and 410fsb without any problems. I'm running F1 now but I can't get pass 300fsb anymore.

Would anyone have any clue as to why this is happening? I'm tempted to replace the MB and see if that helps.

Yes I have "power of deduction." It's either the GS, GT or GTX.

Take a chill pill please. Not my fault you don't know the model of your own video card...

Hey, my ram settings say the SPD of "precharge to ACT delay" is 42, but when i go to manual it says "0". What should i put in there for my Buffalo Firestix 1000Mhz? It's using micron D9 GKX.

I have been having problems with my P965-DS3 motherboard as well. I just bought a new motherboard and 500W Enermax power supply to go with my E6400 core 2 duo. I have been trying to install Windows Vista, which worked fine for me before. But anyways, I get all the way through the install, to right before I would set up my username and password on first boot, and the green bar freezes every time on the windows loading screen. I've tried formatting again a couple of times, but the same thing happens. I have revision 1 of this motherboard. Here are the rest of my system specs below....anyone have a solution for me??
