I'm sorry if I missed this in the thread but,

My PATA DVD drive (in IDE slot) is terribly slow in DOS mode. In Windows it's just fine.

The problem is, using Acronis True Image to restore an image is taking over an hour, where it would normally take 10min.

I have BIOS set to IDE. Have I missed something along the way?

Thank you for any assistance.

Question:

Will the DS3 boot WITHOUT a BIOS flash with this memory?

If not is there any 2x 1Gig RAM for $200 or less that will boot without problems on 1st try?

Trying to flash through @BIOS, into F10.

Any help appreciated.

Are you OCing with your old bios? The right procedure for flashing is:
1. flash with @bios
2. clear bios by shorting that contact
3. start bios setup reload default (you can do optimal defaults)
4. Change the setup to what your old setup is. You might not be able to jump directly as different bios work differently. So restore your best possible setting one item at a time.

BTW, if you have a rev 1 board, I find that F7 is still a little bit better than f10 (DO NOT USE F8/F9). I had a few weird lockups in windows under f10 that wouldn't happen in F7 under the same setup...

I have written Gigabyte for what settings to use to get the SATA300 speeds. When I installed Vista, it didn't ask for a driver, it just saw the drive right away, so I am thinking that might be the problem.

HD Tach is saying that 186 MB/Sec burst speed. In Vista is is showing 30 MB/Sec max during transfers. SiSoft Sandra is comparing the drive to a SATA150 in terms of performance.

Update; these are my results with HD Tach

OS Drive ST3120811AS
Random access 17.2ms
Average Read 49.3 MB/s
Burst Speed 201.5 MB/s

Second Drive ST3250820AS
Random access 13.3ms
Average Read 68.9 MB/s
Burst Speed 214.6 MB/s

Both are Seagate Barracudas, different sizes but they are the same. The device manager shows them as ATA devices, should they say SATA? I also wonder if it may still be a Vista thing. I'll have to ghost my Vista install and try the same test under my XP image.

The burst speed thing is pretty much bullsh*t. It's better to look at the sustained transfer rate. Just to give you an example, i'm running RAID 0 with my two WDC 250 GB drives. The burst speed according to HDTACH is 1600 to 2000 MB/s. It shows burst speed is not a good mark at all.
Your average of 68.9 is actually really good. The harddrives reviewed on Anand or toms don't do better at all. Even mine in raid0 only get ~100 mb/s average. That's only 50% better than yours...

I used Aconis to back up my Maxtor SATA300 500gb drive, then played around with the settings reloading Vista twice to see how to get the drive going at SATA300 speeds.

Hooked it up to the Gigabyte serial connection, set the controller to AHCI and loaded the driver for it before installing Vista. It finally showed as a SATA drive in Vista. In HD Tach, the burst rate was only 140Mb/s with an average read of 48Mb/s? It came up as less then a SATA150 drive in SciSoft Sandra. I then restarted, set the Bios to Raid/IDE. I did Cntrl G and got into the Raid bios and it said the drive had 3g/s Enabled. I then reloaded Vista again. The drive showed up in Vista again as a SATA drive, but the rates were still about 140Mb/s and again showed it as alot less then a SATA150 drive.

I decided to hook it back up to the Intel Serial connection and go back to my image, and it took 3 hours to restore the drive back. Drive is showing back as an ATA device and the Burst Rate is back up to 245Mb/s with an average read of 68Mb/s.

Im on a Rev:3 Board.
I found out the latest bios is the F4, oops.
I Cant hit 3.0Ghz for anything atm. Annoying. Althoguht i can go to 2.9 on stock voltages, i cant break 3.0GHz.
I can hit 2.9 on stocks with a soft mod, but wont boot out of the bios with it.
Doing my head in.

My sig booted fine with the F5 BIOS. My cost was $159.98 on sale at a B&M.

At vailr: I just copy the file to a dos disk and boot to the F9 install?

I need some advice. It's been a long time since I built my own system but I'm about to do it. I want to use this board since it seems so popular and I'm probably going to use a E6320 chip when it comes out.

I plan on doing some rather modest overclocking since that seems like a no brainer and I need some advice on a CPU cooler. My main interest is keeping the rig quiet and the CPU at a reasonable tempurature with a mild overclock.

I have an Antec P180 case and I would love some reccomendations on a quiet cooler. Thanks in advance for any help.

For some reason the Nexus PHT-7750 appeals to me. Any feedback?

Cheers,
Jerry

any of these cheaper tower coolers will do it:
1. sunbeam (yes sunbeam) cr-sw < $20
2. arctic freezer < $25 occasionally
3. some of the tower cooler by Rosewill (note I didn't say made by...) ~was 25 on NE
These are all good coolers...

if your case don't have a side air vent, i would stay away from the nontower types. But if it does, you can even try stock if you can handle the slight increase in noise...

OK, I am about to join the Gigabyte DS3 camp. I am just waiting for my board to arrive from ClubIT. I will be running a C2D 6600, BUFFALO Firestix 2GB DDR2 800, GeForce 7900GTO, OCZ Powerstream 520 Watt, Raptor 74GB, Benq 1640 DVD R/RW, Samsung 160 SATA.

My questions are:

Is the Powerstream enough to run this setup?
If, yes, can I use a GeForce 8800GTS with the OCZ?
I am waiting for a Scythe Infinity, so can I use the stock fan for OCing or should I wait?
Will a 8800GTS fit in a Lian-Li 65B case?

Thanks.

IMO, no that PSU wont be enough for a GTS.
It will be fine with your system i should imagine.

Wait for the Scythe. No point with the intel.

Noidea about it fitting in.

I'd recommend replacing the passive NB heatsink with this:
Thermalright HR-05 Copper Heatsink
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835109128
or something similar, combined with an 80mm fan. [Currently OOS @newegg.]

new updates:

pushing my 4300 from 3Ghz(1.33v) to 3.15Ghz(1.38v)

Passed Memtest for 2 hrs, OCCT for 7 hrs and Orthos for I think 5 hrs now. I Will try to hit 3.2Ghz at 1.38

TEMP under Orthos Load:
TAT - 55
CoreTemp - 43

Around 10 difference between the two. From my previous thread slag said that TAT is 5-6 higher and coretemp lower so that would make the actual temp around 48-50ish.

no other changes except the voltage for the cpu and using shin etsux23 on the NB chip too with this Active NB Cooler

I was trying to put a fan on the SB heatsink but I didn't have enough clearance with the 8800gts

The board is great.

Settings:
CPU - 350x9 1.38v
F10 bios on DS3 ver 3.3
+2 on memory v
Normal on PCIE voltage
+1 on FSB
+1 on MHC or MCH

GL to those pushing their OC on this board.

Interesting. Does Windows Vista have a utility for measuring hard disk performance or do you recommend the SciSoft Sandra? I' removed the jumper on my Maxtor drive and I would like to measure throuput now.

My 3.3 shipped with F9.

my 3.3 shipped with f9 as well..it's working well and overclocking to 415 (as high as i've gone so far) with corsair 5400 memory so don't know if i could expect much more without going to 6400 memory or better. that's an overclock on a e6400 dual core from stock 2.13 to 3.3 and it's very stable so i'm a happy camper. no question that you have to get past that boostrap of about 400 to get better than 400 fsb (i tried 400 and it would not post at all. 410,415.. no problems)

re: the question about drive testing software..i gave up on hdtach years ago cause i'm not paying for it. if you can still find it googling, i use atto express pro-tools and within that a program called disk benchmark . it originally was software designed to professionally benchtest scsi drives but works on ide and sata drives just fine. and it's free..and it shows you everything you want to know about your read write speeds and has a bunch of selectable features. (test block size, etc)

i think the file is small enough that if you can't find it, email me at teerexspam@shaw.ca and i can send it to you. (remove the word spam in my email here. damn bots)

My 3.3 arrived with F10!!!!!

Running out of the case, so far, so good. Since this was my 1st intel build, I flipped out when the fan started and stopped repeatedly on the 1st boot. Changed the fan control from Auto and now it runs all the time. Phew, that was a heart attack.

Sorry if this has been covered before but

1: How do I access the memory timings in the bios, theres a key combination which ive forgotten?

2: what is a safe voltage for a 6600 C2D (with a basic arctic freezer pro heatsink and fan)?

3: am i right in thinking the stock ram voltage is 1.8v?

Several weeks ago i was managing to overclock to 3gh with no probs at stock voltage but now the ah heck wont boot for some reason at 7x400 :-/

Thanks,

dual pci-e for ati crossfire support looks to be it..and i believe...1333 fsb support..gigabyte have issued 3.3 versions across about 4 of the intel lines now.

edit..the press info indicates that the 2 differences between prior are the inclusion of quad core support and the 1333 support in the 3.3 revisions versus prior.

Thanks,

control-F1 on the first bios screen (does not activate if you are on any other screen.

i don't think you can select a voltage that's too high on these boards..but i'd say 1.375, maybe even 1.4 is quite safe..it doesn't take much to get them to overclock. at 425 fsb with my e6400, the voltage still is only 1.365 from 1.325.

edit- just did some followup reading on voltages on the 6600 and i think where i recommended is a good bet. especially if you haven't needed to raise the cpu voltage up to this point. what's your ram voltage at? i'm running my corsair from stock voltage of 1.8 to 2, fsb overclock voltage up .1 from stock. there are some people who are running these cpus at 1.425 but i'd think it's going to start getting pretty hot. the general concensus (with few exceptions from what i see) on the artic cooler seems to be that it's good for moderate overclocks but for extreme overclocks (which will likely mean very high cpu voltage) it's not stellar. i've always believed in upping the ram voltage some first, before tweaking the cpu voltage. haven't lost a cpu, mobo or memory yet

Ok thanks for the tips.
After a bit of tweaking i've got the ram at +0.2 (which i'm assuming is now 2.0v) and 4-4-4-12
The cpu at stock voltage and 7x400.
With these settings it booted, but only after increasing the ram voltage (as its rated to 2.1v it should be fine).
Bottom line is I think I need a new graphics card, some games are starting to chug. Stroll on the midrange geforce 8 series, middle of April so I believe!
