Can anyone tell me how to increase the speed of my memory only on the DS3? I have some firestix running at 667 and want to up them to 800. I'm not ready to overclock the cpu yet, since i'm still waiting on better cooling to arrive.
Thanks!

i've been talking to OCZ tech support and reading various forum posts.. it's looking like i need new ram. I currently have OCZ PC2 8500 SLI edition (2x 1gb) and have the problem with the splash screen freezing and the inability to enter the BIOS. 256mb stick of micron ram booted fine. Any suggestion as to which ram i should pick up? or if there is anything i can possibly do that i haven't already to get this ram booting. thanks!

Try: booting with the 256 MB stick, enter bios and increase the memory voltage to 2.1 volts. Shut down system, unplug power cord, press power button to discharge the caps. Then replace memory with the 2x 1 GB sticks. Reboot.

There's also a beta DS3 bios version F11b on station-drivers.com. Have not tried it and don't know what issues it addresses.

I have a question for you guys. I have used Athlons since I started building computers (early 2000), from the XPs to the A64s and the Optys. I have overclocked all those lines. So I feel I have a good handle on PC building and OCing, etc.

Does anyone feel like the C2D is not that much better than the recent X2's or Opterons? I mean, the benchmark numbers are better, but I find that ripping and encoding DVD's take longer, multiproccessor tasks seem to be more processor intensive. Is it the motherboard? Is it the drivers?

I mean, I replaced my Opty 165 which was OC'd to 2.5 GHz with a C2D E6600, the DS3 and Firestix, everything else is pretty much the same from the previous machine. Why the discrepancy?

Anyone have a similar experience?

I am just curious what is the default coltage setting for the ram on the mobo? Does it start at 1.8 or is it at 1.9v?

Hey all, just got my DS3 MB and I have everything set up, system posted, made my initial settings and loaded WIN XP, using F6 loaded the JM RAID driver and set it up for RAID 1 using Cntry G.

Anyway, system was happy and everything was going along great, WIN asked to formate drive, I did the "long" format and thats where I'm stuck, system is still sitting at 2%!!!!! How long is this supposed to take to formate (all day)?

Thanks.
Macpeteo

BAD DRIVE
Well, I took each drive and put it on the Intel ICH8 chip (one at a time) and sure enough one of the drives gets stuck at 2% of format, while the other is currently at 49% and still going.

Soooo, RMA to Newegg and my Raid 1 on the JM will have to wait

p.s. thats what I get for ordering OEM drives (cant really trust the good one now), also, it does take a long time to format a 250Gig drive, would have thought it would be faster.

Need a little help here.

Got my DS3 up and running on one drive and went ahead and played around with some settings.

My BIOS is the F10, settings are, CPU E6600:
CPU Clock RAtio 8x
CPU Host Clock Cntry [Disabled]
CPU Host Freq 266

My memory is set to 4-4-4-12-2T at 1.9v
Stock CPU/NB voltage

But CPU-Z shows my FSB at 1066, with a Bus speed of 266 with a multiplier of 6, for a CORE SPEED of 1600.1 Mhz!!

What am I doing wrong or not doing? I would at least like it torun at 2.4 (E6600).

Thanks,
Macpeteo

@macpeteo:
Memory multiplier: locked at 2 (Not Auto)
PCI Express: locked @ 100 MHz
Bus speed: 366+ (not 266); later try increasing to 400, 433, 466, etc. (depending on temperatures).
Memory voltage: try increasing to 2.1 v, especially if overclocking
Some bios settings require hitting Ctl-F1 to access.

Um, I dont get it, I would think that right out of the box, the DS3 with a E6600 would be set to run at stated E6600 speed without medoing anything to it.

But be it as it may, does any1 have the exact settings I can use to at least see 2.4-9 on CPU-Z?

Right now, everything I tried still shows a multiplier of 6 with a 266 bus (CPU-Z)

I have set the mem to 4-4-4-12T at 1.9 volts, tried to jack up the CPU Host Freeq. to 376 with CPU Host Clock Control Enabled and Disabled.

So, I guess I still dont know what I'm doing

Thanks,
Macpeteo

p.s yes, I'm aware of the Cntl-F1 combo, thats how I increased mem voltage to 1.9v

hey does anyone what the FSB hole is on this board?
edit: and how far can you safely go without adding NB cooling
TIA

Yup, 1.39, just cant believe that everything I've done has no effect, even cranked up the CPU voltage to about 1.31xx and it still showed the same multiplier. although it did show the higher CPU voltage.

Hi guys, I?m in a very frustrating situation and hoping someone could help me out. I searched on Google and this website come up at the very top. Thanks in advance!

I just built my new system, specs below:

Processor: Intel E4300 Core 2 Duo 1.80GHz (non-boxed version got from Fry?s Electronics)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Rev.3.3 with F10 BIOS
Memory: OCZ Platinum Rev.2 2GB PC2-6400 4-4-4-15 Kit (plugged in the RED slots!)
Video Card: ATI X850 XT 256MB PCI-E (my old card)
Hard Drive: Seagate 7200.10 320GB SATA2
CPU Cooler: Scythe SCNJ-1100P (Scythe Ninja)
Case: Antec Sonata II ATX with 450W Power Supply
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate

Personally I think this is a pretty standard configuration with parts from decent brands. Definitely not premium parts, but not too shabby either. The system runs VERY STABLE if I don?t change ANYTHING in the BOIS. I can run Prime95/Orthos for 12 hours without any problem. Of course, that?s on the default 1.8GHz per core with a weird 5-5-5-15 default timing for the memory.

However, all kinds of problem starts to appear when I tried to overclock a bit, even if I only put the processor from 1.8GHz to 2.0GHz while underclock my memory to DDR700 or so! And no matter what voltage I use! I tried stock voltage for all, of course. I also tried to increase vCore to 1.35v or 1.40v; Tried increase FSB +1; Tried increase memory +1 or +2; Tried Increase MCH +1. I also disabled most of the advanced bios settings. Whatever! It just never hold for over 30 mins before Vista reboots, hangs, or bluescreens.

The funniest thing is, however, I can?t even put my memory timing from the motherboard default 5-5-5-15 to the manufacture specified 4-4-4-15! After I do that, the system restarts itself in 10 minutes. And that?s with processor at default 9x200MHz and all voltages at defaults as well. What the heck?

Could anybody tell me what I did wrong? Maybe I should plug the memory to the YELLOW (1st & 3rd) slots instead? Why I can?t overclock the processor only, ?overclock? the memory only to manufacture specified settings, or overclock both?

I have been playing with this overclocking thing for the past almost a week and still have no answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@Harrier:
You don't mention using Ctl-F1 to access the "advanced bios options"?
Set the PCI Express: locked @100 MHz

GOOD NEWS!!

Got my DS3 and E6600 up to 2.4Gig (yes I know, a small feat) but.........

Anyway, I followed the following directions:

Clocking
1. Make sure that you have the latest chipset drivers and flash the board to the most recent bios version
2. On the main bios screen press Ctrl+F1 to open the advanced options within the menus
3. In the Advanced Bios Features Menu, Disable all of the following: CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E), CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2), CPU EIST Function
4. In the PC Health Status menu, set the FAN Speed Control Method to "Legacy" & FAN Speed Control Mode to "PWM" to maintain highest speed
5. Go into the MB Intelligent Tweaker (MIT) menu at the bottom of the page, set the System voltage control to "Manual"
6. These boards have a default VDIMM of 1.8v, set the VDIMM to co-ordinate with your ram. The Geil I have is specced as 2.1v so I have mine set to +0.3v
7. Set the MCH Voltage to +0.1v
8. Set the FSB Voltage to +0.1v
9. Set the VCORE to 1.45v - Please be aware that this will increase temps!
10. Set the CPU Host Clock Control to "Enable"
11. Set the System Memory Multiplier to "2x"
12. You're set to go, just increase the System bus Frequency to Overclock
13. I would reccommend that you use Intels TAT to monitor temps

I will now go forth and "play around" a bit to see what I can get away with.

Question, in CPU-Z under the memory tab, it states that my memory is 400 Mhz but I have it set to 800 in the BIOS, is it just the way CPU-Z displays things?

BIOS is set for 400 FSB and a sys memory multiplier of 2 (VDMM is set to 2.0 (+ .2).

Thanks,
Macpeteo

Thanks. I will try that. I used Ctrl-F1 to access memory timing, but not advanced bios options. Will update.

Harrier, I had the same issues, but it turned out to be the X-Fi soundcard that I had. Once I got rid of that, my overclocking woes were solved.

Anyways, I still can't find information on the front audio jacks and auto-detect.. anyone have any ideas how to get it to auto-detect? Currently just running my headphones through my receiver which I have connected digitally to the onboard audio.

Having audio issue also, have my case wires AC'97 plugged into the auidio pins but I dont get any sound out on my headphones

Havent tried hooking up speakers yet, will do that in a week or soo but I should have audio on my headphones, is there a setting ?

My BIOS is set to "Azalia Codec" Auto but again, no sound on front of case headphone jack.

Thanks,
macpeteo

Problem solved, removed the AC'97 plug and put in the HD Audio plug, bingo, works!!

Cool

Have you updated your BIO with the lastest F10 if so it should work just hit Ctrl F1 and than you should see the advance options. Also make sure to disable the USB legacy and make sure to manual put the PCI at 100mhz. it will be defaulted on Auto i believe. And than try to OC again.
