So here what I've done so far:
Trying to install Win2K via an IDE to USB removable hard drive enclosure gives me an INACCESSABLE BOOT DEVICE BSOD in the first phase.
Moving RAM around didn't help.
Booting into Knoppix sends my monitor into some out-of-range mode (it's a Daytek DF905).
Overclocking it to 2.4 from 1.8 seems to help a little, but Win2K install still doesn't finish successfully.
Loaded both optimized and fail-safe settings.

Still doesn't work.

Phoenix97: I'm not sure that Win2k is going to understand this motherboard. See if you can't find an XP install cd (preferably with SP2 slipstreamed), or a Vista install DVD. Remember, Vista will run for 30 days without activation, plenty of time for testing and troubleshooting.

I have the rev 3.3 version of this board running with a E6600 and some Corsair RAM. I am having issues with booting sometimes due to the fan not going at all. Everything else spins up, the CPU fan doesn't then it shuts off with no beeps or POST and repeats this cycle infinitely. The way I fix this problem right now is to use the jumper to clear CMOS and it boots up again fine. However, this problem happens again every few days. So far I've tried it with the fan on QST and disable but after a few days it stops working again. What could be the issue here? The fan is connected to the 4 pin directly on the motherboard and I doubt it is the other components? Am I looking at a board RMA here?

Have you tried putting the fan on Legacy? I also had issues with the fan which the legacy setting seems to have solved.

Not yet right now I am trying it on auto so if it happens again I will try Legacy. Does anyone else seem to have this problem?

3 GB ideal with Vista

I just installed an additional 1 gb of Corsair TWIN2X1024-6400C4 which with the Twinx 2GB modules gave me 3GB. It is amazing how much faster everything works over 2GB! 4GB is apparently not all used with the 32bit version so I went with the 3GB , filled all the slots and am quite impressed in the performance over 2GB.

Many good brands out there, I have been using a Mushkin HP2-6400 2Gb kit for several months with great success.
Can someone suggest some decent ram to go with the DS3 and a e6600? There are so many choices, looking for the best bang for buck. Thanks!

Did you install an extra 1GB Kit (2x512MB) or a 1GB module?

I just got DS3 rev1.3 from newegg. And I have trouble OC'ing.

I have

Ultra X 500W P/S
HIS X1550 with 256MB PCIe card (heat shink only)
e4300
vista business 32bit
super talent 667
BIOS F10
Stock cooler

I set

memory 5-5-5-13

E Halt off
Therm M off
EIST F off
USB legacy off

Mem Multi 2.0
PCIe 100MHz
Mult 9x (default for e4300)

then I can only go to FSB 210MHz

If I go 211, it seems to boot into Windows but no video output at all.

Is this my graphic card problem? I set PCIe frequency at 100, though.
Memory is way within the capacity, so as powersupply.
Bios i ok. OS doesn't matter, I guess. Temp is 29C at FSB 210 MHz.

Anybody have any idea, or same simptoms?

It had the same problem again. After 2 boots the system wouldn't start up anymore and I had to clear CMOS to get it working again. Could there be something wrong with the CMOS or something? Right now I reverted back to the Intel stock fan and sink to see if it'll make a difference.

I am having trouble holding my over clock. I had been using 8 X 388 for a 3.1 but the CPU host frequency keeps defaulting back to disabled thus causing my system to run at 8 X 266 = 2.1 (E6400). I am now using a 9 X 345 = 3.1 so if I restart or shut down it will at least run at stock 2.4. I have the voltage set to auto (optimized) so it increases from 1.375 to 1.40 when both of the stated over clocks above are in effect. Any ideas????????

I get into the Motherboard Intelligent Tweaker to enable the CPU host frequency which allows me to increase decrease my FSB but for some reason after I make my selections and save it reverts back to default settings. When the system is booting up it shows 345 X 9 initially then it shows 266 X 9. Sometimes the oc will hold and I can benchmark it but if I restart my system after virus updates or msconfig changes it will lose the oc but the values are still there just not enabled under the MIT -à CPU host freq (disabled). How do you take a screen shot of your bios?
If my settings are being reset, is either a battery issue or there are some Intel ?automatic? crap features on for bringing the CPU back down to the speeds it think it should be at? How do you turn them off?

sorry for so many questions and incomplete thoughts

That's the board adjusting your settings due to instability - usually an indication that you've pushed an overclock that the system doesn't like. Throw a little voltage at the NB, PCIe and CPU then try different FSB settings. You may be hitting one of the FSB walls and need to go higher FSB/lower multi vice-versa. Also, be mindful of the impact your overclock is having on RAM speeds.

Establish a stable baseline and then adjust a single property at a time to understand where your limits are. Overclocking gets frustrating when people jump all around and don't keep track of what works and what doesn't - being systematic about it is key.

so you don't think it's a battery or power supply issue? I had it running stable at 3.15 for 8 hrs prior to transporting it home Sunday night.

I suspect this has already been posted but rather than search all 95 pages, I'll reply here close to your posting.

The MIT stuff is a sham, you have to hit F1 at main bios menu and then enter MIT for additional memory timing settings and cpu controls. The main thing is the C1E CIA1 TIM or whatever they call it. These are the cpu throttling controls. If you leave them on they override your overclocks or ramp the FSB down to the default 266 based on proc load. Turn them off to have a constant OC for burn-in and benchmarking.

Hi everyone,

Just bought the v3.3 (came with F10 bios, flashed to 11b but still have problems)

CPU: E6300 (stepping B2, 06F6)
RAM: Corsair XMS2 6400 4-4-4-12-2t (2.1V)
PSU: 400Watt (14+15Amps on 12V1+12V2)
GPHX: Winfast 7900GTX 512MB

The board will not let me use 1:1 (assume that is SPD 2?), by default it runs 2:3 (shows in CPU-Z), but whenever I try and run it at SPD 2 it wont POST (it will POST the VGA card, but not the whole system)

I find that my vcore is very low (nearly 1.28 all the time, even with speedstep disabled), so I'm suspecting my PSU ($50) to be the culprit. Any of you guys ever experienced this?

I used the CTRL F1 keys to enter the advanced bios options. I need to add some voltage to my memory timings and I need to double check and see if C1E, CPUID Max limit, EIST, and Virtualization technology are disabled. Looks like I will go back to last stable OC of 8 X 388 as opposed to 9 X 350 which caused my system to revert back to stock speeds but with the multi at 8X it ran at 2.1 vs 2.4. It's still pretty fast though.

Nope, I'd put the battery and PSU out of the mental picture for now.

You should read the Gigabyte DS3 overclocking guide here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1169366

In particular, it sounds like you probably have "CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)" and "CPU EIST Function" enabled in Advanced BIOS features - both of which will dynamically adjust the processor's FSB and multiplier. I'd also make sure you are cooling that northbridge, I found a lot of overclock stability problems beyond 300 mhz FSB went away once I added a 60mm fan blowing horizontally through the NB heatsink.

I prefer to avoid the AUTO setting for voltage, I'd configure the CPU to 1.4v and kick +.1v to the other components. Also, make sure you have locked the PCIe speed at 100-105 mhz and make sure you are manually specifying the memory multiplier. I've had a lot of problems with odd settings when "AUTO" is selected for just about anything in the MIT menu.

Thanks for the link for the OC guide, I found that yesterday and it has been very helpful. I have 2 fans in the front of the case 1 on top blowing down and 1 in the rear . I also have the Zalman 9700 LED on the cpu. Temps didn't seem to be an an issue but I will monitor them closely. right now I beleive I have all the intel advanced features enabled, voltage is on AUTO, optimized yeah right.
Thanks for the tips, I'm just looking for a modest OC 3.0 - 3.2 and I will be happy, actually I'm happy with the E6600's performance thus far.

I will look into it to see if it needs any additional cooling. Do you have an additional fan on your NB or are you relying on passive cooling?

Did your case come that way, with the top fan blowing down? I'm surprised because blowhole (top) fans in the cases I've seen are exhaust fans that expel the air out (on the principle of hot air rising). These cases I've found to be the coolest. I'll bet you can improve your ambient temps by reversing the airflow of that top fan.

Auto voltage btw is 'excessive' voltage with the DS3 and raises CPU temps quite a bit (never mind the warning that its not optimized if manually adjusted).
