Just found PGtGM (Pop Goes the Gmail). Maybe of interest to some of you. Certainly useful for me.

This application acts as a POP3 + SMTP layer between your favourite mail application and your Gmail account. It can periodically check your account every x minutes too.

Once installed, and the Gmail username/password part filled in, all you need to do is create a Pop3 account in your mail software, and set the address to "localhost", with standard ports 110 for Pop3 and 25 for SMTP.

I know it seems odd with all the storage available, just that I prefer to use Thunderbird with Gmail rather than the inbuilt interface given the choice.

it's totally random. use your account, subscribe to a mailing list, make your account active. you might increase your chances of getting your invites quicker.
