But at the same time, they're also increasing the space limitations for AdWords ads so they won't work as well in smaller placements like that. As a heavy advertiser on Google, I personally wouldn't want my text ads on something like Gtalk as you'd have even less control over when they're displayed than you do currently on AdSense. Plus, text ads on a IM client would just seem to be a dismally weak peformer anyway. I know I actually click the graphic ads for a movie or song occasionally on my AIM and Yahoo clients as it's easier to quickly process whether it's of interest to me or not.

It makes sense over the short run. In order for an IM service to succeed you've got to get enough people using it. Keeping it as clutter-free as possible will help in that regard - plus it's Google and many people would flock to Google no matter what they were offering.

The vast majority of my friends and coworkers are on AIM and a few more are on Yahoo. I wish more of them were on Yahoo as it's my personal favorite thus far. Being able to use Launchcast direclty in the client is great and their new VOIP is very impressive. I'll try the Google one, but I doubt I'll be jumping ship anytime soon assuming all my friends stick around on AIM and Yahoo.

All you need is a Jabber-compatible Instant Messaging client (such as Apple's iChat, or GAIM), and a GMail address. Digg this, NOW!

If you're getting the 405 error with GAIM, or simply cannot connect anymore, follow the updated configuration instructions below!!! You have to use an @gmail.com address to login from now on.

Server: talk.google.com
Username: youremail@gmail.com
Password: yourpassword

Note: If you can't login, try to turn off 'Secure Messaging' or 'Encryption'... etc.

-- TRILLIAN USERS: Someone just told me that they got it working with Trillian, but I can't verify this. Just go to Trillian's plugin page on their site and download the Jabber plug-in, install it, and configure a new connection as below:
"server : talk.google.com
port : 5222
Use legact SSL for connection : not checked"

Feel free to IM around with fellow GMail users just by adding their addresses to your list! I'm not sure how long this is going to work, but let's make the best of it.

If google talk comes out with enough unique features, I think it will really grab the majority of the im market in a short amount of time, just as aim did from icq. It will also get people to use gmail as well, so I think its a win-win situation. Both AIM and MSN are bloated software with useless features. I use trillian exclusively, but if google talk becomes widely used, I won't hesitate to use that.
