I just can't see this being that successful with them being so late to the game. Most people are already well entrenched with either AIM, Yahoo, or MSN, why would they switch? Yea. you can start using it, doesn't mean your friends and family will. I can't see anyone I chat with switching, because Yahoo does exactly what they need it to, allows them to chat with people, and they already have very large lists.

Because Jabber can let you connect to other chat protocols on the server side. That means you only need a Jabber client to connect to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, etc. You'd no longer need a client that supports multiple protocols. In the end, you'll should have a Google quality client that lets you chat with all of your friends regardless of what they're using.

Google Talk is entirely based on XMPP so that's what the client uses. Right now, it's still in beta so I'm sure we can expect more functionality later. I guess I should say that it uses XMPP and not Jabber. Is that what you mean?
