I was talking about the client.

Google Talk is entirely based on XMPP so that's what the client uses. Right now, it's still in beta so I'm sure we can expect more functionality later. I guess I should say that it uses XMPP and not Jabber. Is that what you mean?

I don't know what XMPP is. Is that to Jabber what OSCAR is to AIM?

Oscar is the AIM protocol right? XMPP is the protocal that Jabber uses for IM. Jabber is just a wider set of protocols that use XML for various instant messaging functions.

I really hope they add support to add MSN contacts.. MSN is immensely popular in my area, and I highly doubt any of my contacts would ditch it to move to this.. maybe a few, but again, only if it could communicate with MSN clients..

I don't get it, I can connect using Exodus and Gaim, but Google's own software won't connect any more

I'd download it but I don't feel like it as I'd rather have it on my computer than the family computer. Doesn't look like it could pwn as much as Skype though.

I think Skype does text/voice chat better. I'll probably stick with Trillian (AIM/MSN) as my main IM applications.

Haha. In the google talk help page, under each section, click on the More.. button. Sometimes, randomly, you will be brought to the Google Maps help page instead. If it doesn't work for the first time, click back and try again.

i dunno, i tried to register a new account and:

talk says my account is locked, google accounts says i have the wrong password, checking my password says no such email address exists

How does google talk compare to the new Beta version of Yahoo messenger? I just tried the new version of Yahoo and the voice calling is very clear.

I installed it, since it's an early beta I'll cut it some slack. There's lots of room for it to improve or go horribly wrong, it really depends on what direction google decides to take it.

I'm going to give it a run, doubt I'll use it much though. Pretty much all I'm using these days to chat is lotus sametime to chat with people at work, and there's no switching from that.

So apparently google seams to think they need to display my unread emails titles in my taskbar like anoying Norton, AIM, Windows Firewall or any other friggin pop up crap.

I know Google likes to penetrate certain markets with new ideas and such but I think the whole IM scene is quite overdone, and there are many many out there. I downloaded it but I don't really see any incentive over AIM yet. I perhaps will pick it up when Trillian has support for it.

I don't think I'm even going to bother. The people I talk to all use AIM.
