BTW, do you guys feel like it’s worth upgraded/tweaking these cars? So far I haven’t had to touch a thing.

For cars I know I'll be driving for a while, I'll put $30k or more into it, but otherwise I won't waste my money unless I need more horsepower to win a race.

Speaking of which, if anybody on my friends list needs a car for the Amateur Muscle Car Classic race, I have a slightly modified '70 Charger 440R/T I can put on loan. I bought it used, changed the oil, overhauled the engine, and threw on a few of the cheaper part upgrades. It's not the fastest on the track but you can still win the race by easily taking the corners faster. It tops out around 120MPH but accelerates faster than anything else on the track. I was able to take first on the first really tight S-curve and kept the lead the entire way. There was a Shelby in that race that would always catch up on the long straights but I could easily gain enough space in the corners. I only won by 1.5 seconds but it never even felt that close throughout the entire race. It takes a while to stop, so be sure to start braking by the 100m signs for each corner.

I don't mind loaning cars as long as I get them back.

Picked this up yesturday, great game. Here are my thoughts after about 4-5 hours of time into the game. Please keep in mind I played GT1/2/3 quite a bit, but never got around to playing 4:

-The AI seems almost the same from GT3; no reaction from others based on your driving. Somewhat of a negative for me.

-The sound was disappointing for me as well. It sounds more like a very good PS2 game rather than a modern console game. Forza is MUCH superior here (BTW - I do have a good 5.1 surround setup...)

-The menus are tedious and the load times are atrocious (even after doing the 30 minute install....blah)

-It's GT! The gameplay is a whole lot of fun, and unlocking new cars and races is always fun.

The negatives are almost all non-racing related, but I was expecting more polish from a game so long in the making. I played the crap out of GT3 and Forza1, and this is a still a great game. I am somewhat of an audiophile, so the sound does kind of bug me. The load times appear to get better over time (after things have been loaded) but the developer should be ashamed of the poor job of designing a slow and outdated UI for most of the game.

Graphics:8/10
Sound: 5/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Fun Factor: 9/10

Once again, the gameplay and sheer fun factor make this game a lot of fun. I didn't have the same "wow" factor I had when first playing GT3 though, but it looks very good. Part of this might be that many of us (myself included) have had other very good racing games to play in the last few years, so this is more evolutionary. For those who have not yet played racing games on the 360/PS3 platforms, they may feel a little more differently.

Off-topic: I think a car-gifting thread would be awesome. This would be a great way for people to trade specialty cars (oldies, trucks, etc) for racing and help eachother out.

The license tests are a real time consuming process, and the heavy menu-bouncing one has to endure doesn’t help!

pro-tip: there is a next/previous license button after you finish each license so you don't have to go back to the main license menu.

i did not mod my first car (civic type-r) and demolished the competition in the amateur races. i wasn't able to keep up in the next level higher races due to the power differential. i catch up in the corners but get walked in the straights.

I found it's faster to just crash at the end of the race so you can hit "retry" than have to go back through the menus. If you know your run will not get what you need, this is a lot faster to replay for Gold.

I do this also.. or just hit Pause and Retry right before the finish. Much much faster. Sucks when I forget to hit Pause though!

i agree the AI sucks but i did discover something while messing around. i turned around and parked my car on the guide lines and waited to get lapped for a head-on collision.
they actually tried to avoid me. even as i tried aiming for them, they swerved.
now, how come they don't do that when i'm actually trying to race?

the sound is much improved over the older GT's. V6's don't sound like I4's anymore. change your views to get a different sound perspective. it sounds a lot better in the above/behind car view than inside, which sucks i like the inside cockpit view.
never played forza so i'll have to take your word for it.

load times are very annoying, but at least it's not gameplay related.

this i know. i personally go with pause/restart.
i was talking about after completing a license.

Gripes:
Lack of a Machine Test (specifically a 1/4 mile run and a top speed oval)

Horrifying shadow aliasing. Haven't seen headlights yet though I've heard thats bad too.

Why is it sometimes O backs you out, and other times O moves the cursor to the "exit" icon? An Exit icon? Really???

Brake upgrades (they really should have done a semi/racing/ceramic and balance ctrl)

Used car dealership is very very annoying. At minimum I think it should carry at all times one of all the cars you might need to buy (like jap classics or lightweight k car). I liked the GT4 style of 2 diff dealers. I am praying that I didn't just miss a huge chunk of cars that flew by and would never be repeated. Its just a waste of my time to make it random.

I find it incredibly annoying how easy it seems to be to spin out and how long it takes to recover, also any time your nose is towards a wall it seems you stop all forward prograess and head further into the wall regardless of wheel position. You must completely stop to reverse, stop from that and head forward, hoping you don't spin out again on the restart. Its very annoying.

AI is literally retarded. Nothing matters, they don't seem to even know you are there, crashing randomly and spinning me out from the back because I'm in the way.

Menus are just really badly placed, and the game doesn't actually have anything worth listening to.

If you're backing out into a menu that has to load, then O will put you at the exit button. If backing up a screen doesn't require a load, the O goes immediately. The game knows it has to load for a couple of seconds, so it's kind of like asking you "are you sure?" before you exit out and endure the small wait.

Now if you were to ask me why it needs to load between certain menus, that I do not know. But I don't mind it.

Got this from GAF. It is a translation of some questions Kaz answered via Twitter this morning.

From twitter:
1. GT5 soundtrack coming soon, 2 cd pack
2. Someone complains about the photo mode lacking the ability to select multiple files at the time, Yamauchi says he would like that ability too
3. He answers to someone comments about the cars' great behavior even if rally mode and standard cars suck, and he says that cars behavior uses a new model in GT5. He then adds that he's starting to feel he wants a new steering device (?)
4. Someone says he plays almost only online, and would like some remuneration for online mode too (credits). The answer is it's under consideration, someday they'll add it through an update.
5. The reason for no face tracking outside arcade mode is not enough memory. He adds something about the pit stop function being excluded, but I'm not sure about this part without playing the game.
6. Someone says wouldn't it be awesome if there was a free-roaming mode in the cities where you would have to respect lights and speed limits, and you would be able to visit the stores you want. Yamauchi answers that it's one of the thing he wanted to do in GT5 but wasn't able to.
7. Boring comment about 5oul on d!splay (seriously?!!) being very popular in Europe.
8. Mechanical damage will come with the next update, early December (not necessarily December 1st).
9. Full support for G25 and G27 (with button configuration) will take a little more time, for now it's gt force pro only
10. Lounge function will be added progressively.

Some more good info from GAF. The list of cars you can perform the racing modification on:

Acura NSX RM '91
Chevrolet Camaro SS RM '10
Chevrolet Camaro Z28 RM '69
Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (C6) RM '06
Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (C6) RM '09
Dodge Challenger R/T RM '70
Honda CIVIC TYPE R (EK) RM '97
Honda INTEGRA TYPE R (DC5) RM '04
Lexus IS F RM '07
Lotus Elise RM '96
Lotus Elise 111R RM '04
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR RM '05
Nissan SILVIA spec-R AERO (S15) RM '02
Subaru IMPREZA Sedan WRX STI spec C Type RA RM '05
Suzuki Cappuccino (EA21R) RM '95
TVR Tuscan Speed 6 RM '00
Volkswagen Golf IV GTI RM '01

Someone also said that you can still paint a racing modded vehicle, but the color will only be applied to certain parts of the racing mod livery that's added upon modification. As for what those certain parts are, it varies from mod to mod.

Well....color me extremely disappointed.

I haven't read through all replies yet so forgive me for any redundancy but this game is an incomplete mess.

AI - same, same, same.
Sound - very inconsistent in quality and strange volume inconsistencies.
Cars - can't even change rims on a non-premium car? Can't decorate them, have to unlock paint? What a joke.
Upgrades - no brakes?
Tranny - final drive only?
Standard cars and many of the tracks look like crap.
Menu loading times are a farce.
B-spec? Does anyone really enjoy that? What an unnecessary feature, even if they spent less than 200 hours developing it, that's 200 hours that could have been spent on damage modeling, or some realistic physics, or more than 2 or 3 cars for each MFG(oh right there's 1000!!!11!, you just have to keep trolling the used car lot and/or beating impossible challenges) Do not want.

It wasn't until I tried the second TG challenge with the Lotus that I had nightmare flashbacks from the GT Time Trial thing from a year? ago. You know where your 370z would spin out at 35mph and was basically uncontrollable? Yeah great that they brought that "realism" back here as well. Sorry that's just not fun and it's not realistic.

Maybe you guys with racing wheels are faring better but the PS3 controller is so inferior for the level of control needed to play this game well. The analog stick is just too goofy and slow to use, the buttons are On/Off only. The 360 controller's triggers are vastly superior and when precise throttle and brake control is necessary to keep your car from being stupidly out of control.

Eurogamer did a review of GT5 comparing why GT5P had awesome shadows, but GT5 final, has crap.

All in all, they say that GT5 is just so much MORE detail rich than GT5P. GT5P ran @ a resolution of 1440x1080p, while GT5 ran @ 1280x1080p, upscaled to 1920x1080p.

In addition, more polygons, more details, DYNAMIC WEATHER and DYNAMIC LIGHTING makes it impossible (system limitation) for the use of higher resolution shadows (GT5P) and more cars (premium) on screen at once.

They went into to deep detail as far as technology goes, if anybody's interested.

You do know the dualshock has a pair of long-throw analog triggers as well, right?

Yeah, doesn't do it for me and they aren't as precise or progressive as the 360 triggers.

I agree with this. I haven't played GT5 so I have no opinion on the controls in regards to it, but in general (I own both PS3 and 360), I find the 360 controller to have much better triggers in regards to both feel and position. I have smallish hands and I find the PS3 control forces my hands to be in a slightly unconfortable position which makes me cramp overtime, whereas the 360 controller feels more like I'm holding pistols.

That being said, the 360 controller can't compete with the PS3s D-pad. Shrug.

Lot of patches coming out folks, take a deep breath

All that stuff is easily fixable, including the AI.

It sucks all us people, the biggest fans that bought then game early, are getting the crappiest version of the game. They're going to update most of the issues we all have when we`re all mostly done with majority the game. It`s just sad that all that extra time spent and it feels less of a full game than every other GT before it.

For me I was just expecting more after 6 years of waiting.

There are positives, I think the presentation is nice, the menus look good. The premium cars and some of the tracks look amazing.

To me it just looks like this project fell prey to scope creep in the extreme with the end result being that no feature or element is 100% complete.

Exactly. We waited 6 years, why not wait a few more months and get more polish?

Your dreaming if you think AI patches will significantly increase the quality of the AI. Patches may help slightly, or resolve issues where it is broken, but I sincerely doubt a huge lift will be found here.
