Alright so I just got this for Christmas and I am beyond underwhelmed. First it prompts for quite the long install proces probably took about 20-30 minutes to get in game.

Then is there any 4:3 support for the menu screens. Everything is so tiny and I realize that a 19 inch CRT is not the best gaming experience but the menus are darn near unnavigable with the small screen size and the 4:3 aspect ratio.

Once I get in game it goes full screen and looks good but a large portion of the GT experience is in the menus...

All the other PS3 games I picked up this holiday work fine on a 4:3 screen but is just a miserable experience. Oh well guess I'll have to wait to grab a small LCD or hook it up to my monitor.

I hope you are joking.

I hope you are joking.

Not at all. Maybe I'm blind but I could not find a setting at all and the text is nigh unreadable. I'm not naive enough to assume it would look wonderful on an old 480p CRT but making the menus unreadable is kind of aggravating. Though I may have to dig in the settings again and see if I can adjust them.

I dunno, seems kinda silly playing the world's best/most realistic driving simulator with a hand-held controller. 80% of people play racing games with a controller though so you wouldn't be in the minority. I think once you play with a good wheel, you can't go back to controller.

Yikes that is pretty ridiculous.

It's not, don't worry.

And that stupid burble isn't anywhere near as pronounced from the factory.

It's certainly more pronounced than a Civic. I actually like that sound - but then again, none of my cars sound like massive farts...that's not my style. :awe:

Not everyone can blow $300 for a decent wheel and mount. Not to mentioned having to drag it out and set up everyvtime you want to play. I am content relaxing on the couch and enjoying the game. I am OK knowing that I will never be close to the fastest times out there. Since the internet part is busted and I can't get online anyways it's a moot point.

Did anyone see if they were able to get the Xmas gift cars yesterday that were supposed to be Japan only but everyone was supposed to be able to get them? I didn't get to sign-on at all but just signed on right now and nothing.

Turned out to be Japan only. you could make a japan account and dl them but still had to have the japan copy of the game. Pretty lame actually!

Which would happen to be the best then?

There is no "best", people will have their own opinions on that. The main point is, GT5 is not a "simulator", despite what PD says. GT5 is just a fun racing game, despite it's many flaws. I don't think you will ever see a true racing sim on a console, they just don't have the hardware required to run one.

If you want to check out a couple of good racing simulators, try iRacing or Rfactor.

$160 a year? GT3 quality graphics? Questionalble studio? 2 cars to start off with? 10 tracks?

No thanks...

I got like 5 years out of GT4 for nothing close to that price.

Nothing wrong with that, sims are not for everyone. Most people just want a casual gaming experience, not a racing sim.

You shouldn't speak on that which you know nothing of. $160/year is completely wrong. GT3 quality graphics is completely wrong. Questionable studio is completely wrong. Two cars to start with is completely wrong.

With that said, iRacing isn't for everyone, but don't generalize if you're wanting to compare the two.

That video is 2.5 years old, back when iRacing was just coming out of a closed beta. Like any other paid subscription gaming service, it evolves and changes quite often. Membership fees have been reduced tremendously since launch. Graphics/lighting have been greatly improved (especially on the newer released tracks). I think the cars you get with the base subscription is up to around 5.

As far as the questionable studio, the co-founder of Papyrus, makers of the highly rated NASCAR Racing Season series, co-founded iRacing after Papyrus went under years ago. He brought a lot of the Papyrus team with him from what I understand.

If there's a reason to go to iRacing over GT5/Forza 3 or any console racer its the douchebags online in their Veyrons and X1s. Too slow? Let me ruin everybody's fun and drive backwards. :hmm:

i started playing Shift on PC ....its like having a caterax removed. got so tired of gt5's fuzzy graphics. probably not the most accurate sim in comparison but i'm having more fun playing it. Cant wait for Shift 2.
stopped using my G27 wheel though, got too lazy messing with it, so much easier to just pick up the pad.

It's not about getting a wheel to be 'better' at the game. Just to enjoy the game much more and getting more out of it. Like I mentioned before though (and you said) wheels are just too expensive right now and not worth the hassle.

So instead of playing on a $300 dedicated you decided to go with a $1000 all-purpose appliance that may force you to spend more money in the future? And instead of futzing with a dedicated wheel you prefer to mess around with drivers and system settings? :hmm:

I update my gaming PC every few years, and also have a PS3.

I get all the games I want and can play them the way I want to play them, with custom settings, on my PC. And on my PS3 I play the PS3/console-exclusive games.
GT5 on PS3 pisses me off a little because I cannot alter the settings for my G25. Can't change center-spring strength, degrees of rotation, or anything... all available to edit on PC titles.

As for racing, there are far more sim/sim-type titles (and customizable/mods are available) on the PC.

And I must say, with the right modifications, Shift is simply spectacular. Not perfect sim, but each "sim" has it's own faults in one area or another.

So i picked up the game last night. Its fun. But man the beginner races are pathetically easy. I won most of the races with an 8-10 second lead. using crappy cars. The yaris event was the only challenging on since the gift car yaris was so underpowered. but i managed ot win that anyways

Go re-run the FF beginner race with the Vitz (if you have one). A car with 84hp going up against 140+HP cars? Now that's challenging and fun.

BTW, when are they going to fix the servers? I haven't been able to login once. I only got the game xmas, but still...

Your grandson is bright if he thinks that way. If you have the money and time to burn then run with those tweaks and upgrades...Some people prefer to just play.

Haha i think ill pass on that! I hated the Yaris. its kind of funny if its a more or less open race (ie just by country or by year not specific make) Ill easily overpower the competition with my car and can make up for my crappy driving. But the single cars races do prove a challenge

I actually had fun buying a Ferrari 458 and fully upgrading it and tuning it. Absolutely rocks now. Best 400k or so i spent. I have found now that im in the "expert" level or whatever money comes much quicker. Just getting the ferrari and going broke and im back up to like 300k. It helps i have cars for the other races i suppose (like the buick 62 special upgraded)

O well enough of a ramble from me!
