It appears that head tracking only works in arcade mode and not in GT Life mode. Weird.

Where did you see this? If that is indeed true, I am sad.

I don't think of it as a useless feature at all. Using a wheel and stick shift, I don't want to push buttons to see the side of the car. And while in racing games I rarely do it, it's because it feels so unnatural and makes me feel like I just jumped out of the car.

I like first-person cockpit display, and if the head-tracking works well (where you barely move you head, so as to not make it uncomfortable to keep staring at the screen), then a slight swivel of the head renders as looking left or right out the windows. I imagine that will help keep a feeling of immersion on the track..

but if it's arcade-mode only, I am going to be greatly disappointed. It makes no sense to limit it to arcade mode.

It was said over at gtplanet and GAF. This is from somebody who already has the game over in Europe, so I guess there's still hope since it comes from random internet poster #5,287,772. At first it was said that head tracking didn't work in races where pitting was enabled (which didn't make any sense whatsoever), then it changed to only working in arcade mode.

LOL @ people holding a grudge because of the delay. Way to take a stand, now go out there and do something more useful, like run for cancer or something.

the same morons who get pissed off at blizzard for delaying their launch, then they end up making an epic game

kind of off topic but i have questions about steering wheels. Last time i ever used a steering wheel was back in the PS2 days w/ GT3 i believe. every steering wheel i've used, including games at the arcade would only turn 90 degrees left and 90 degrees right. it really didnt feel like i was "driving a real car" so to say.

I am hopefully assuming that steering wheels nowadays virtually replicate the full movement that a car steering wheel has? such as the latest logitech G27 steering wheel?

my biggest turn off to realistic driving simulators was the steering wheel thing, so i always just tended to play arcadey games like NFS underground w/ my keyboard and skip the realness or driving sim genre altogether. I hope things are different now, are they?

my 'BP is a worse disaster than 9/11' friend, i have had many many wheels and i prefer a 270 degree wheel to a 900 degree wheel.
900 is too much turning, esp if you don't have a stable surface to mount the wheel on.
in fact, on my g27, i default to the lower setting if possible, and i have a pretty decent mounting setup.

That's exactly what I'm referring to, but it's not that I've lost interest in it, just that I have no intention on giving anyone money for a product that was announced, then delayed 4 years. If I ever feel the need to buy it, I'll get it second hand so that my money ends up in the hands of the buyer not the production company.

so you'd rather pay the same amount of money for a less polished product.
gotcha.

The delays were painful but once, I'm playing it I'm sure all will be forgiven. Kind of like child birth I guess, a long painful labor but all is forgotten afterwards (what a weird analogy.)

what does head tracking do?
if you turn your head too much, you're no longer looking at the screen. i don't get this "feature".

I apparently have not realized how difficult such a feature is to describe to someone without visual evidence.

You don't "turn your head", you only pivot your head an inch or two - enough to let a camera detect said movement, but not enough to force your eyes off the screen.

Try this - keep your eyes fixated on one spot on your screen. Now, pivot your skull an inch or two, but keep your eyes fixed on that same point.

Is this that difficult? Your eyes never leave the screen, but that brief movement of your head is enough to create a larger movement on screen.

No head-tracking software, on any platform, has ever required so much movement that your eyes are then no longer on the screen. Considering that is counterproductive, I don't get why anyone thinks that is necessary.

My issues exactly.. only useful if I had 3 screens.

It's perfectly useful for single-monitor setups. Again, your eyes don't leave the screen - your not pivoting your head a full 45º or more, only a 10º at most... whatever degree is the amount of head-turn that still doesn't cause one eye to be obstructed by the bridge of your nose.

Now, I don't know how effecient the PS Eye is when performing head-tracking duties, but I know the available PC hardware requires minimal movement.

you should try it. it's an unnatural feeling.

i played a head tracking game at this virtual nascar setup arcade at the mall, looked like a pretty pricey machine...anyway, the head tracking kinda sucked, sometimes it would jerk one side or the other a bit without noticeing i was moving my head and keeping your eyes on the screen while turning is actually kinda...not sure how to say it, i guess similar to wearing a VR helmet, kinda disorienting cause the screen moves with your head but your eyes stay straight and to me felt weird. wasnt very precise either but PSeye may be better, i dunno but wasnt really as useful as it sounds

Sounds like they released a 133MB patch last night that enabled the rest of the functionality that has been locked for users who have been getting the game early. So be forewarned, a day one patch is imminent. I'm also reading that multiple people are seeing the initial install taking upwards of 50 minutes or more. The install is optional though.

EDIT: Some pictures of the online lobbies from GAF. Looks like if you privatize a lobby, it assigns you a unique code that looks not unlike a Wii friend code. Not sure if you *must* use the number to join private lobbies or if a user could also invite people in from their friends list. Here are some pics being posted:

There's also a spectator mode where I guess a user can watch a race in progress if they join after it has already started, which is pretty neat.

Another lobby pic (you can see the private code in the upper left): http://i.imgur.com/CaJMn.jpg

EDIT 2: More technical lobby settings for online racing:

About the Race Quality setting:

This setting governs the frequency with which driving information is sent and received over the network when racing online. GT5 automatically detects players' connections speeds, and recommends a race quality setting accordingly. It is normally safest to follow this recommendation, but if your connection is dropping during online races, you may want to reduce the race quality setting. Disabling the voice chat function or reducing the maximum number of room participants may also resolve connection issues.

The following options are available for quality: Disabled (voice chat only), Very Low, Low, Standard, High, Very High

From Amazon.. "This portion of your order is being prepared for shipment and cannot be canceled or changed." :awe:

Even I was a little skeptical the date might not kept.. G27 and Wheelstand Pro locked and ready.

My local Gamestops aren't doing a midnight release (said there weren't enough pre-orders), so I'll be picking up my copy at 10am when the one next to work opens. Hopefully they let us take half a day like they usually do every year, which means I'll be leaving at 11am and hopefully installed, patched, and playing by 1pm.

G25 and fanatec wheel stand is already standing by. I am getting so hyped to play this. I think this is the most excited I've been to play a game since GTA4.

EDIT: Somebody needs to start a new GT5 racing night thread, too.

What sucks is that I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year so I have to prepare instead of playing GT5. Family will probably stay until Friday afternoon or Sat. Hopefully they enjoy racing too.
