Because it isn't a GTX 580 core clocked the same. What they did to me is offer GTX 570 Sli performance( 350$ x2) with some added value, like more SP's and ram, etc..

Yep, and apparently the GTX 570 suffers from vreg issues as well. That's exactly my point. Same cost cuttings measures, same result... Imagine that.

OK guys, I want you to pay attention to this video.

The reviewer in this video has his gtx590 at 809 core (30% overclock) memory at 2128 (20% overclock) , @ 1.05 volts (max afterburner voltage) running at 86c. Pulling over 500 watts, just like the 6990 did in the Anandtech review, so no surprises there.
Driver version 267.71.

http://www.linustechtips.com/ltt-vi...-maximum-overclocking-results-linus-tech-tips

It is VERY OBVIOUS that using the older driver was the problem. It not bad vrm's , overheating, or any other of these BS fanboy excuses.

In fact the same reviewer that blew up his gtx590 THEN used the right driver and the card ran fine.

QUOTE!
"The Swiss team tried again using the 267.71 drivers, which has the overcurrent protection built in and the GTX590 didn't fry itself."

The mistake that Nvidia made was packing the older drivers in with the gtx590 to some reviewers.

Bottom line?
Always use the latest drivers when reviewing a brand new card and for Nvidia, don't send the card to reviewer with the wrong drivers!

I now look forward to some real overclocking reviews like the one in the video I linked above.

edit: I found a good one..
Gtx590 overclocked vs 6990 overclocked using a 2600k @ 5.0 ghz.

It wasn't the backplate right? I thought it was the back of the actual PCB they were measuring. Whatever is at the front of that area doesn't necessarily have to be over 112C. If the heat dissipation in that area is bad, and you have several components dissipating power in that area, it can get extremely hot. Remember it was just ONE spot where they measured 112C. If it was 112C all over the card I would be skeptical of that.

Looking to the left of the picture it looks like you can see where the backplate ends, I could well be wrong though.

My French is rubbish so I cant translate that website.

Well it makes a change from a specific Nvidia driver killing cards to anything other than a specific driver will kill your card.

Seriously though that might be a bit painfull if you overclock and get a driver crash, will the overcurrent protection still work?

What I imagine is having competition and choice and when this happens there are extreme views from both sides.

Does all the cards that blowup came from ASUS ???

If yes then it could be the ASUS put the wrong driver in the box.

The guy in the video is using an NV reference card and not ASUS

edit: nope it was not only ASUS

Give it a rest and remove those wood screws from your head. So basically, we're talking about a software based protection rather than hardware based...I guess all will be good as long as you don't have a driver crash or something..

I bet he is CPU bottlenecked... I get X3249 score from 1 6990 at 830 MHz stock speed on 980X
and 3715X on 6990CF at stock clocks...

What a shame! This entire thread is garbage.

Anand is a great tech site, but ppl have destroyed any value in the forums. I was sent here from a person making a joke out of what the forums have become over here. Look at what has become here.

This is the Official 590 Review Thread at Anand...... what a joke!

Fixed that for you.

If you have absolutely nothing gtx 590-related to say at all then please refrain from posting.

Fixed that for you.

Come on... So, if you're shelling out 700 bucks on a top tier video card, you're not supposed to overvolt ( I don't mean killing it) or overclock it. That does not compute. That's what these beasts are made for.

Exactly. That seems like a big engineering oversight to have zero hardware current control. It would suck if you were overclocking and the first time you crashed you also fried your card.

Yes its a BIG engineering oversite.. this place is getting more ridiculous by the minute, that Ocre guy was right.

Here is the answer to why the cards are blowing up.

Simple, the overclocking programs (and the tweaked ASUS bios) other than Afterburner are giving the cards too much voltage. Voltage limits on these cards is 1.05 to 1.1, remember they start out at .973 volts.

Should go no higher than 1.00v to be on the safe side.

EDIT: Or should not overvolt at all if your worried about an explosion.

Sweclockers card exploded @ 1,025v

link..? I seen the video and it did not state voltage.
Would you now admit to sticking 1.2 volts into a card? I know I wouldn't, I wouldn't want to be at the retard reviewers table.

And even if it did, thats one of thousands, and it happends.

And as stated , most cards are doing over 800 core with less than 1.1 volt anyway. Thats plenty fast enough to beat any card out there.

I'll link it again.
Watch this guy overclock, he is using MSI afterburner and MAX voltage is 1.05. He got a stable overclock of 809 core (33% overclock), with the card pulling over 500 watts.
